New PS4 Model Slightly More Efficient With 1TB Hard Drive?

Will this be one of the big announcements at E3?

According to DualShockers , the FCC has certified two new PlayStation 4 models, or rather, two versions of the same model.

The big difference? The hard drive: It seems model CUH-1215A will boast a 500GB capacity, which is the same as current PS4 models, but model CUH-1215B will feature a 1TB (terabyte) hard drive. Just based on the numbers, it seems obvious that the two models will be similar; perhaps the only difference is that hard drive size.

The new model will also be a bit more efficient, as it will drop the 250 watts of power down to 230, and the amperage will decrease as well. And it'll be a little lighter, too; 2.5 kilograms as opposed to 2.8.

And hey, maybe this new model will come with a price drop too…

ok honest question, does weight really matter towards performance? cause its not like your picking it up and moving it around everytime you use it

No, it's just worth mentioning all the differences in the new models.

Weight is only important in that it indicates a die shrink, which implies a price drop. Most price drops for consoles accompany die shrinks (which is basically when a company reduces the spaces between transistors so that they can produce more process dies per silicon wafer), or other advanced fabrication processes. Basically, companies iterate their manufacturing processes over the lifespan of a console, miniaturizing the components within. This makes it cheaper to produce, which means companies can lower the price while retaining their profit margin.

So when you see that a new version of a console is coming out and it's lighter, it's a safe bet that it's also going to be cheaper.

I think that does mean a price drop. I could use a new hard drive already actually. My 500gb drive on PS3 seemingly never fills up. Since PS4 puts all games on there it's full with a few games.

I don't like that, it doesn't make the games run any faster.

My guess is a price drop for the 500GB model.
I expect the 1TB offering to stay at $400

Actually, putting games on the hard drive does make them run faster. Load times are reduced, and quick disc fetches are faster. A hard drive obliterates an optical drive, in terms of speed, even if hard drives are quite slow, compared to RAM.

for sure theyre going to drop the price and announce the new hd size. ps4 needs a pick me up for 2015 and i think e3 will be it.

sony is looking to push the ps4 hard for the second half of 2015. of course were gonna see some games too, its a matter of which ones will be releasing this year other than the already known ones.

1 Tb is still not enough for this gen, we need at least 10 Tb, so I can dump everything on my ps4…

10TB HDDs do not even exist at this point. They're coming soon, for use in data centers and other places requiring actual mass storage.

I have 282 games in my Steam library, ranging in file size from 25MB to 60GB. I could install every single one on a 2TB HDD and have room to spare.

Throw a year of PS+ included in the boxes, that will roll the sales quicker.

I'll likely throw a 2TB drive in my Ps4 sometime. It seems anymore because even full disc games dump all their data onto your HDD and then require gigs of patches and updates one just as well buy their games digital. I mean heck, didn't Bloodborne have like a 9GB patch? One way or another you are dependent on connectivity otherwise your disc games are broken on their own and they still require the same HDD space as a digital game.

2.5" hard drives aren't cheap – unless you know where to look. newegg had an ebay sale of portable usb hard drives – I bought a 1.5 Tb for $50, cracked it open and installed the drive in the ps4, recycling the old ps4 drive back into the enclosure.

Ha. I did something similar for my PS3.
I had a cheap netbook that failed on me. I busted it open and took the HDD that was twice the size of my then current PS3 drive, and placed it in my PS3. I noticed it was even the same brand, either a Seagate or Western Digital. I forget which. It works like a champ.

Anyway, I don't know, a 2TB 2.5" HDD for under $100 doesn't seem too bad. It'd give me ~4x the storage of what I have now.
Was your USB drive 7200 RPM?

They should make it so that when a game requires a multi-gig patch that "does not alter the size of the game itself" you can delete the game from your hdd but not the patch. That way when you go back to play it you can install it again without having to re-download the patch. IT'll still take up space on your HDD but not as much as the full game. Has Sony added back up functionality? so you can back up your games to an external HDD. Or is that too far out of the "gaming" realm?

the new drive i put in was 5400 rpm. Not the greatest, but the same as the stock hdd.

i might regret not putting in a faster drive at some point, but right now i'm still enjoying the extra space

I don't know about you all but I have plenty of space on my PS4. Heck my PC with a 1TB of storage has about 800GB space left.

I may just be the minority here but I don't see my PS4 running out of space. SOmetimes less is more and if you don't need it installed then just delete it.

Yeah, who has the time to fill that much space up with games and movies and actually play them all to completion?

the point is noone wants to constantly wait for the games to install, thats the big issue since they need to be prior to playing them. If you go back to an older game you ned to delete, come back to the newer one you need to delete, thats a pain in the ASS!

Not to mention if you buy some that are digital only, do you know how long you have to wait for 30-50gb downloads? And to do it numerous times? christ, thats a problem.

I guess the CEO of Netflix was right about a new PS4 on the way but (according to his official statement)
it's also supposed to include outputting in 4K resolution

Would be a waste for Sony not to do this

my thoughts:
One of two things will happen if the 1tb comes.

Either it will be the same model or same ps4 but with a 1tb HD

Or,

Anyone remember the rumors of a smaller size ps4? Heres what i thought about that back when i heard them….. Smaller ps4, mainly because there is NO disc drive, it will be ONLY digital, and the 1tb HD is included to compensate for no disc drive. It will cost less too, possibly launch at 349.

And if this pans out within a year both will be knocked down 50 bucks to 349 and 299 respectively.

I bought one of those Seagate 2 TB external USB 3 drives, popped it open, and took the drive inside and installed it into my PS4 right away when I got it. I don't need to worry about space for a good long while!

I dropped the 500 GB drive into my PS3, and put the old PS3's 320 GB drive back onto the portable's USB 3 controller,a nd now have a small portable drive for random stuff!

Hmm, how much of an energy savings would there be using eight 1GB RAM modules over the 16 512MB modules the initial model had? GDDR5 doesn't use a whole lot of power in the first place. That could be a reason for the slight power reduction since IIRC Samsung started mass producing 1GB GDDR5 RAM chips several months ago.

By the time I get a PS4 there will probably be a die shrink to 14 or 16nm and $299.99 bundles if not a price drop to $250 or less thanks to my video card upgrade.
