42 Minutes Of FFXV Gameplay: Swords, Waypoints, Quests

If you're waiting not-so-patiently for the Final Fantasy XV demo that arrives next month, here's a little gift.

Of course, if you're one of those people that have to go into any experience – even a demo – as fresh as can be, you won't want to see this.

For everyone else, 42 minutes of gameplay on the PS4 is worth seeing. Now, personally, what I see is a big open-world structure complete with quests, way-points, and enemies you encounter in real-time (not dissimilar to Final Fantasy XII ). I'm also seeing 99 percent swordplay and gunplay, along with various special moves like block, dodge-roll, etc. I suppose if you'd like to call this a role-playing game, you're welcome to do so. Seems like every title these days can make that claim in some way.

Me, I see an action game gone open-world – like every other game in existence, apparently – with a few light RPG elements. Hard to see it any other way, really.

Heck the main developers of FF Versus XIII were people from the KH staff.

It was OBVIOUS from the start …from the VERY START back when it was shown off in E3 2006, that this was going to be an "Action RPG."

I know what action/RPGs are. This is mostly action.

And it looks outrageously stupid to me but whatever.

I'm glad, I know Ben is salty about all this, but I'm over those old school RPGs. I need control over my characters. I just don't have the patience anymore on a console to sit there and wait for my characters to attack.

@ Ben, so out of curiosity…what genre would you consider Kingdom Hearts as?

I've recently finished KH 1.5 and I finished BBS on 2.5 and am working through KH2 right now.

Maybe it's just the way the player is playing with button mashing, but KH is -WAY- more in depth, rpg-wise, than what that video shows.

Well Ben all Im trying to say is don't hate on a game because it doesn't play the way you want it to or because it doesn't play like its predecessors, hate on a game because you've actually PLAYED it and came to the conclusion that it's actually not good.

So basically wait til the demo or game actually come out, play it and THEN do all the eyerolling in disgust that you want, and I'll be ok with it, until then it's just getting annoying

@Underdog – what RPG elements are you referring to specifically?

I remember when Ben used to think more highly of ff versus before it turned into ffxv, saying that it would be more of an rpg game and the better ff game to look forward to after seeing how disappointing ffxiii turned out to be and how much of a departure it was from previous FF. This was from a time where we all expect this game to be more action rpg. Nothing has changed and now all of sudden it's not really a rpg game and he hates down to his guts, even after se has been releasing more bits of the rpg and ff elements of this game, already much more that ffxiii. Yet, I don't hear talks as extreme as this that ffxiii isn't really the rpg game that it's supposed to be, beyond gameplay.

Point is this game never changed its focus, so I don't see the reason to be okay with it then, and then hate it. Yes I understand that it's become a main ff title, but that doesn't really make a proper excuse to flip the 180 switch on a game that never changed its focus.

Declaring that he knows action rpg and stating this isn't really one is a bit silly after this video and what we've learned so far, but I still love the guy for his passion. To reach their own.

Setting — OK nothhing expectacular from the videos I've seen.

Characters — Uninspiring but perhaps they grow on you throughout the journey

Battle system — OK, looks more like a Devil May Cry than an RPG

That being said I'll keep an opened mind. Persona 5, The Witcher 3 and Bloodborne remain at the top of my RPGs for the year (in no particular order).

I dont think S-E should have done this. It would have been nice to have some sort of a surprise. I'm not going to watch it as I want my first experience of XV to be a big one 🙂

Though I am concerned at the word 'Quests'… I dont want it to have a structure like Elder Scrolls where you have loads of main quests and side quests and you cant tell the difference. I'm all for extras but I want XV's story to not be defined as Quests but to have a story which has twists and turns and you get put into situations of interest.

You must not have been around during those PS1 FF days. Those demos were the best. I bought Brave Fencer Musashi because of the FF8 demo. Popped in the demo before I even tried playing Musashi, which ended up being an awesome game!

Ben, your FF penis is bigger than mine. But it doesn't mean that I'm not a Final Fantasy fan. FF and RPG games in general are what turned me into the gamer that I am today. I've been playing since the Atari and NES. But before I got my hands on RPG games, I kinda just played any game I could get my hands on, without really knowing or caring much about what I was playing.

Once I started to get into RPGs (NES), is when I became a hardcore gamer. My FF fan peek came during FF7-FF10. Up until then, I probably played as many RPGs as you did. After that, the games just didn't do it for me anymore.

My tastes in gaming changed as well and while I still love me a turn based RPG on a handheld, I just can't do it on my couch anymore. My gaming time is very limited, so I prefer to have as much actual gaming as possible when I do play. I just can't sit there and level up while watching my characters attack on their own.

Like I said, I can do it on my handheld because when I'm on it, I usually don't have anything better to do, so that type of game play suits it.

But anyway, realize you are on the other end of this, on the pretty extreme side. You're still into replaying FF7 once or twice a year, every year. That doesn't mean you're a real fan, and I'm not. It just means you have more time to game.

So what I'm trying to say is, don't be a snob.

Cant see the vid but I just hope it has like a main big plot and towns and NPCs and all the menu fun (upgrades, items, weapons, armor) and dramatic story stuff that SE used to be good at.

Temjin001

it has a real big map with camp sites. I don't see any requisition officers as of yet. it also has an attack, dodge, parry, and jump button.
Taking a cue from MGR Revengeance if you hold down the sprint button while moving you'll auto jump over objects.

The video where they show the towns got me really excited. Reminded me of the awesome towns in FF8. But back in those days, those towns were pre-rendered and tiny. These look to be huge, beautiful, and very detailed.

It has a main big plot for sure and I'm sure you also know already about the npc and towns. What they show new here is a glimpse of the weapon upgrade menu stuff. They also showed some food items as well as camp feature that I recall from ffvi think. They also showed the ability to evade from battles while even skill getting summer xp out of it.

I noticed a skill tree, item progression, and quests. It looks like an RPG to me. Did anyone actually watch the whole thing, there are a lot of RPG elements going on, especially when you look at the pacing of combat, it is much slower and enemies have much bigger HP pools than in say God of War.

I like what I'm seeing so far.

I watched every minute. Couldn't agree more. There was even one move where noctis jumped really high into the air and pikes down with his spear or sword. Lots of variety of moves and no where did it seem like a super fast pace action game.

"I know this super fast-paced action may cause RPG purists to go, “uh…this is an RPG?” Yeah, it is."

So Ben, how come Kingdoms of Amalur deserved that title more than FFXV? I really can't recall you being anywhere this harsh on any game for calling itself an rpg, especially before it's even been released.

Imma say it again. I GET that most of you commenting on this article think this all looks great. But wouldn't it have been better if this and every game after FFXII was under a new name/new I.P.?

I can't understand for the life of me how SE just slapped all of their old school fans in the face in order to compete with COD. If final fantasy remained closer to turn-based (with XII being the farthest they strayed from the tried and true formula), I think everyone could win. Old school RPG aficionados like Me, Ben and World could get our RPG fix and the impatient, less micromanagement inclined guys/girls could play the new style of FF.

What if GOW became a stealth game more akin to MGS and alienated all of the long time followers who enjoyed the brutal God like fighting of the other 4 games?

Or say Uncharted became a MMO or online only game, and totally ditched the amazing linear storytelling we all fell in love with.

Maybe TLOU 2 will another straight forward shooter like COD and Halo, eliminating the amazing crafting system in favor of more pickups and near endless supply of ammo?

Draguss
Draguss

Unfortunately I get the feeling even if SE called this by another name it doesn't mean we'd still be getting turn-based FF games, we just wouldn't be getting FF games at all. I think all we can do for now is hope that while the name stays alive SE will someday realize how much people miss (and more importantly to them how much we'd be willing to pay for) a classic style FF. Until then, there's no reason not to enjoy a good RPG just because its combat system is real time action.

daus26
daus26

The problem with that is the games, including FF12, includes many other things that makes an FF game, like soundtrack, chocobos, magic moves, summons etc. By your definition, the FF franchise is ONLY defined by their turn based gameplay, which is just not right imo. And honestly, it's not really about patience imo. It's not like you're defeating these monsters any faster. It's not even about being harder or easier either. Important thing is that it's not like a dynasty warriors game, where practically no strategy is needed, and this game looks far from being a mindless, button mashing game. Strategy is one of the key elements of turn based and I believe this new battle system still has that only in real time.

Glad you mention it. It's one of the very first things I noticed. Fluidity and more lifelike than I've ever seen in an FF game. The running animation alone is much natural looking. There are many varieties and small tidbits that I appreciate like being out of breath, healing others, and that your crew isn't just a crew that just follows behind you like you're the head of the train.

daus26
daus26

Ben, did you even watch the whole video? Or did you just skim through it? There are plenty of rpg elements. It's far from just a mashing action game lol. Maybe you just need to see an English version or something because you seem too oblivious on what's being demonstrated or talked about. There are so many variety of moves and sets and combination. On top of that, we haven't even seen most of the magic stuff and the powerful duo moves as stated in the summary. We've yet to see summons and other great FF mechanics and features that are promised.

I am impressed so far. Please don't call me a FF traitor or that I'm not a true FF fan.

About 25 mins, it clearly shows how useful your party members can be. The battle was over before even seeing the enemy, unlike most action games where they're just there for show and you're the only one that can damage or finish off enemies. Big deal to me if developing and managing party members is a big aspect of the game.

I'm not bothered by a shift in gameplay. FF, to me, has always been about enjoying a finely crafted fantasy world and story, with enjoyable characters and well developed gameplay.

FF13 left a sour note because the world made no sense. The story made no sense. The characters were annoying. And the gameplay was trying to be two different styles at the same time, and it basically played itself. It just didn't work.

If they have created an enjoyable world here, and everything else falls into place, I don't see why it can't be great. I'd rather have a well made clean break from the past games than something which is trying to be everything to everybody.
