You're starting to hear this more and more: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is just so different from any of the previous series installments.
Whether the new structure is better or not is an argument for another day; what I'm interested in is whether or not people think it's actually unfair to compare MGSV to its predecessors.
Many have said the story simply isn't as impressive in this one (primarily due to the inherent nature of an open-ended sandbox game), and even the boss fights – a staple of the franchise – just aren't as memorable. In other words, while MGSV is undoubtedly a masterful production, it doesn't rely as heavily on the storytelling components and legendary boss battles. The way the game is played is also very different, as there's a ridiculous amount of freedom and options.
Hideo Kojima says this is the vision he has long since had of the franchise, but older technology just couldn't allow him to realize the vision. Therefore, one could argue that the new MGS is the pinnacle, the culmination of the creator's hopes and dreams. That alone should make it stand apart, right? And yet, inevitably, gamers all over the world will try to compare it to the old classics. And sometimes, when the new products are just this much different, those comparisons become fraught with difficulties.
What do you think? Is MGSV a totally different beast? Should it be compared to past efforts or not?

Don't know but I'll get to find out in less than 2 hours!
made my way into chapter 1.
That first hour was non-stop scary.
Goes to show that there's a right way to do thrilling interactive movies with the majority and a wrong way. MGSV does it right.
So far it feels very polished and very smooth. I think I've seen more color in the first hour of this game than the pallete of all prior MGS games combined. Kojima really shows off all the new visual toys he can use with his new engine. Fire. material map morphing (look at Snake's back muscles or clothing). Very impressive lighting. Smart use of specular highlights. Huge outdoor vistas at a slick 60fps (see that Witcher 3?)
One improvement I think I'm spotting is quality anisotropic texture filtering. Something console games usually lack. The engine is definetly putting on a better show than Ground Zeroes did.
So far it feels exciting and new but at the same time familiar.
Edit: I will say the game made me do a double take when it gave me on option to customize my face. Yea. I made him look just like Snake!

Bagh! I want it NOW!
XD
Not sure what people are talking about. Yes it's different than MGS1-4 but it looks like a bigger, better more awesome Peace Walker from what I've been watching on Live on Playstation. It looks massive in scope and fun.
Different but absolutely of a part with what came before. Metal Gear has always been about sneaking into enemy bases/territory to accomplish a mission. Kojima has also never been quite content to stand pat and keep doing what he and his team did in the previous game in the series, both in terms of gameplay and story development. I think those who played Peace Walker recognize MGS5 sure looks to be the true realization of the PW vision, and that's a very, very exciting proposition.
Each game in the MGS series is a singular experience, and it looks like part 5 continues this trend. I couldn't be happier.
Gonna have it today but from the look of gameplay etc it does look pretty different from previous mgs games with an open world but then again I dont think it being different is a bad thing.
having played it now, it is pretty different from previous mgs games purely because of the open world go do missions type of thing.
If the story is taking a minor back seat then it could be attributed to all the negative feed back from Guns of the Patriots ultra cut scenes. Of which I was not apart of. I loved every cut scene, but that's just me.
In Kojima's defense, this has always has been his vision. You can undeniable go back to The Shadow Moses Incident and see hints at open world gameplay mechanics
It would be wrong not to compare it to older entries. Every sequel gets the same treatment.
Still in two minds about getting this. Big MGS fan but as I commented before Ground Zeros just didnt draw me in like previous entries did.
After hearing that the boss battles arent legendary..well that was one of my favourite parts…
(really old spoiler)
Especially the sniping battles with sniper wolf and the End…not to mention the hand to hand battle with liquid waayy back when…the satisfaction that he got what was coming to him…
