Ridge Racer Unbounded Revealed: Drive, Destroy, Dominate

Although it wasn't the most impressive launch title for the PlayStation 3, Ridge Racer 7 was still a fun, exhilarating experience.

And you just can't keep a good franchise down. Namco Bandai Games America has announced Ridge Racer Unbounded , the latest series iteration for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. And much like other aging franchises, the newest title will "break all the rules." In other words, this won't exactly be the RR you remember from olden days; first and foremost, instead of the traditional closed tracks, you'll be hitting the city streets for "one of the most action-packed and destructive racing games ever seen." The new theme for Unbounded is quite simple: Drive, Destroy, Dominate. Said Carlson Choi, vice president of marketing for Namco Bandai:

"RIDGE RACER UNBOUNDED injects a shot of adrenaline into one of the most revered racing franchises in video game history. The talented Bugbear development team is committed to crafting a game with the amazing attention to detail the RIDGE RACER series is known for, while also delivering a destructive game, fans old and new will appreciate."

If you're not familiar with Bugbear Entertainment, they're the "leading Helsinki-based racing specialist, whose games in the genre have earned both widespread critical and commercial acclaim." They don't offer an estimated release date just yet but to remain updated, keep up with the game's official Facebook page .

But I enjoyed the 'old age' RRs on PS1 and ps2.

It was a bit like a racing rpg back then.

Every time a truck showed up and the lady said 'you have got a new car,' it felt as thought you had actually achieved something.

A lot of that has been lost now 🙁

They're probably the ONLY Helsinki based racing specialist.

Ridge Racer 7 doesn't get the love it deserves. Apart from anything else it actually runs in both 720p and full 1080p! It looks pretty darned good while doing it too.

This sounds like a fun game, but I hope that they retain some of the old style Ridge Racer game play as well as their new stuff.

Ridge Racer 7 is one of my all time fav arcade racers. It's a rare one running at a TRUE 1920×1080 resolution @ 60fps. It plays, looks, and feels like Ridge Racer. Just improved with drafting and nitrous combo linking. While RR does feel antiquated with it's age it doesn't really surprise they're trying something new with the series. In fact, they tried it last gen with R: Racing Evolution and failed. I'm curious about what they'll do with this new one. I still feel confident a classic style RR game will come around again sometime in the distant future, probably during PS4's launch.
I'm getting a heavy dose of rebooting over the last couple weeks.
Ninja Gaiden, SSX, and Ridge Racer.

It's funny though, despite the 'age' it feels like a real arcade racer, and nothing else I have does.

RR7 was amazing. Easily my favourite title since RR Type-4 (not that I played #6). All I can hope is that this is just a spin-off for the series and we still get a REAL RR8 somewhere down the line.

I no longer call myself a Ride Race fan(gave on the games after Namco stop doing arcade releases),but from what I read this game is nothing but a pure NFS speed clone. This is where I say congrats to Namco and butchering your IP.

On a good note, its nice to know that SEGA will never gimp is Outrun its outrun IP by giving it to another developer.

I loved the earlier games but this reboot looks like Burnout Revenge. That means it will rock.

Not sure what this is, but it sure the hell is NOT Ridge Racer! Japanese companies can't even make their classic racing franchises without going to Western studios now? I have bought every single Ridge Racer on the PlayStation since the first title and this is upsetting me for me. Why is it, for some reason, I get the feeling this needs to be more 'extreme' because it's being released on both the PS3 and 360?

DmC, SSX and now this… sad. Just sad.

I miss Type 4. That game was just epic. Even the way it started with the brake lights whizzing across the screen to create the name of the game was amazing.

This new one really does sound like burnout though.

Seriously "Destroy Dominate?"
Are we talking about Ridge Racer here?

"Japanese companies can't even make their classic racing franchises without going to Western studios now?'

When its cheaper just to outsource your work as oppose to doing it in-house it make tons of economic sense. Its for this reason why a outsourced Ace Combat title is right around the corner.
