Dual Shock 4’s Light Bar Is “Always On”

Here's something you might not have known about the fancy new Dual Shock 4.

You're likely aware of the Light Bar on the front part of the controller, but you might not realize that unfortunately, it can't be turned off.

A gamer asked Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida if this would be possible on Twitter , and Yoshida replied simply, "no." This would've been a way to save battery life, and it's a little confusing, too. If the PS4 camera isn't mandatory for playing on the system – and Sony has already confirmed that it isn't – then why exactly can't we turn off the Light Bar? Maybe it just doesn't work that way. Oh, and Yoshida also said the reason the PS4 only has USB ports on the front of the system is so you can "easily recharge" the controller.

Well, that makes sense. But this Light Bar business doesn't…does it?

It's a GPS tracking system from North Korea.

Different colors let you know who's player 1,2,3,4,5,6, or 7. Assuming there are 7 players.

It could do that just as well if you could turn it off.

Great. More things reflecting off my TV and bezel. And I thought the DualShock 3's red status light was annoying…

If its only as bright as it looks in that picture its not a problem for me. And while I agree that it makes sense to have USB ports in the front for charging purposes it would be nice to have a few in the rear to hook up an external drive. Especially when you have grabby children who like to pull on things. Ha

or when you have some PS4 peripherals to connect like the camera. It's kind of annoying at least for me to see one of the ports being taken up, specially with the PS3 only having 2 of em.

Exactly. Makes just as much sense to have them in the back as it does the front.

Hmmm, hopefully someone will make a jacket that covers it up enough. Seems like a waste of the battery but if it's LED then it won't pull much juice. I just don't want it being all bright and annoying.

It doesn't come with a camera but it does come with the sensor doesn't it?

yah, I can see this annoying as hell if it's too bright especially when it's dark outside/lights are off. My Samsung has a blue light in front of the bezel, good thing you can adjust the lighting down to off.

From the moment I saw the light bar at the PS4 reveal it was obvious the camera was going to be "essential to the PS4 experience".

WTFs the point of forcing the light to be on, when your not using it?
so what happens when im sleeping and am charging the controller?
lucky me gets a blue light flashing in my face?
oh joy!
looks like a roll of black duct tape will be my first purchase after getting each controller.

If your eyes are shut, you'll be alright.

Orrrrr…you could always turn the controller off when charging it/not using it.

why the hell do you need the damn light bar facing your closed eyes when you sleep? use your common sense man. plus the light bar doesnf even seem that bright enough.

I thought it was pretty much accepted that the original idea was to bundle the camera into every PS4, but they changed their minds last minute to undercut the price of the Xbox One. I think this is further evidence of that.

Makes me wonder if Sony was considering the Eye the same way MS was, but opted out. Unfortunately the light bar is probably hardwired in the controller, light an power on light.

The concern is how much would the battery have with and without the light, similar to whether you used the tumbler on the controller or not.

ITs not a big issue, other than how much life could you gain from the battery if it was off. Other than that… if you play in the dark you will always know where you left the controller.

I would like to know how much the recharge cable would be. Not the one that initially comes with the box, since the PS3 ones were not long enough to sit back and play with it connected. Unless you like sitting right in front of the TV. But the cables we have to buy after in the store. Of course it would be nice if one could the PS3 cable, if we have one already.Anyone know?

Keep Playing!

Only show that sony planned on making the camera part of the full package and got it out of there to make the system cheaper .

The game coming out with the ps4 ( need the camera to play it ) only make me more confident about being right about this .

Now, does the ps4 controller utilize Sixaxis? Because if it did, it could theoretically work as an alternative to the camera sensor if you didn't have the camera..

It's not like it's halogen headlamps we talk about here. I think it looks stylish with that front light detail. But then again I've always been weak for lights. Blinking, strobing, coloured, funny shapes, effects, details; bring it on.
When I discovered my new CPU fan were glowing blue I instantly went, "coool!".

*shrug* It'll always remind you that such an accessory exists if you wanted it.

That sounds very annoying, many games are best played in the dark, and having some forced-on light right in front of you all the time will definitely be annoying. I know how annoying it was the few times I've used the Move controller…

I see no reason why they couldn't include a simple option in a controller menu to turn that light on/off.
