Deus Ex: Mankind Divided In Development At Eidos Montreal

Woo-HOO!

Deus Ex is one of the most respected and acclaimed franchises in all of gaming, so it's always exciting to hear about a new entry.

The latest will be fully unveiled in the May edition of Game Informer and we've got the baseline details on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided , which is currently in development for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. No release date yet; chances are, it won't arrive until next year.

Set in the year 2029, after the events of Human Revolution , protagonist Adam Jensen joins forces with an Interpol-funded task force. The goal: Hunt down and capture augmented terrorists. Jensen will come with a fresh set of augmentations that will bolster his combat, stealth and social interaction abilities, and of course, his advancement is up to the player.

The Eidos Montreal studio is hard at work on this bad boy and we can't wait to learn more about it!

Man, I'm so hyped but also worried about the story. Which ending was cannon?

Besides that though, I cannot wait. Deus Ex Human Revolution was an awesome surprise back when I bought it out of curiosity.

YES! It's happening! I really hope the story telling and cyber punk atmosphere are in tack for this one.

Oooookkkkk…so as someone who never played a Deus Ex game, I want someone to convey the highlights of this series to me. What makes this game so great? What have I been missing all these years? What games would you compare it to?

I've played through the original and Invisible War. I've played some of the most recent.

Highlights: Cyber punk atmosphere is uncommon among gaming heavy weights. It feels it's own world and the sort of stories based on that kind of fantasy makes for some interesting plots.
With that environment you get advanced civilization but not sci-fi advanced. So don't expect massive alien invasions with spaceships or teleporter beams etc. It's grounded in a distant future that raises socio-political issues that would likely be relevant in such a reality. This makes it easy to identify with the conflicts.

Strong narrative attention that dynamically considers your decisions in a more meaningful way. I finished the first game in about 3 or 4 different ways and each ending felt thought out.

While it's an action-RPG that can be played different ways, I think it's best designed as a stealthy action RPG. It designs itself to make stealth a prominent feature of it's play.

Weakness: The games haven't usually been the best example of tech showcase. While they all looked nice don't expect a stunning presentation. Cinematics never stood up to Metal Gear.
If you're tired of dialogue trees in games this might not be for you.

The biggest draw is the freedom to play the way you want. Whether you want to rush in headfirst and wreck everything, or sneak past people, or even talk your way through, the game gives you that freedom at all times, and every goal has several unique paths to it. More than most games you can customize your gear to suit your playstyle.

The story actually responds to your decisions, instead of pretending to like most games. Unlike the Walking Dead games, they don't just tell you someone "will remember that"; your decisions determine whether someone lives or dies, not if they die immediately or a few minutes later. Your statements to one person will affect whether another person attacks you on site, is friendly, kills himself, or ever shows up at all again.

Despite what Temjin said, Deus Ex has usually been a technical powerhouse. The first game was widely regarded as one of the best looking games ever at release, and Human Revolution is still a fantastic looking game four years after the fact (and the Director's Cut included several graphical upgrades). More importantly, the games have some of the most unique and arresting art styles around.

Nothing looks quite like Deus Ex, and absolutely nothing plays like it.

Sounds highly intriguing! Thanks Temjin and Bio! I'll pick this one up for sure as long as the development process seems like everything is peachy.

I highly recommend the Director's Cut of Human Revolution. It still looks fantastic, especially on PC, and you can get it for cheap.

Looking forward to this so much.'Human Revolution' was one of the best games of last generation, in my opinion.
No spoilers, but I am wondering how Jensen is going to be protagonist without invalidating my favored ending. Regardless, I'm happy to slip into his shoes once again.

They could find a way to continue the narrative with that ending. It would almost certainly feel more contrived than continuing other possibilities, requiring a retcon like Ian Malcolm got for The Lost World, but they could do it.

However, if they go with a single, unified endpoint from Human Revolution, it will probably be the one where the people are told the truth, hence the 'mankind divided'.

Great news! Absolutely loved Human Revolution and the original Deus Ex.
Thinking about it, haven't played the directors cut for HR yet…. may have to get started on that soon.

I can't go back to the vanilla version now, the DC is so much better, and once you've spent 2 playthroughs earning every possible prax point, it's hard to give that all up 🙂

So excited about this game. Can't wait to hear more about it. I loved last gen's Deus Ex so much I'd be all for a HD Remaster for the new consoles just so I'll get to play it again. The PS3 has long since been retired.

I'm cautiously excited. Deus Ex: Human Revolution, while a damn fine game, didn't really grab me in the way I expected it to. I found it to be really clunky and the story could have been better executed. Still a good game, and I'm interested in seeing how Eidos Montreal goes beyond it while bouncing back from the lacklustre reception of Thief.

That being said, I think it might be a mistake to have Jensen as the protagonist again. The world building in that game was amazing, and I think revisiting the same bland character, with an even blander goal this time round, is an appalling idea. Maybe that's just me, though.
