Nioh 3 Returns From The Darkness

In surprising news from the recent State of Play, Team Ninja, the group better known for the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive franchise, announced the third installment in the Nioh franchise. The series, which originally starred the Irishman William Adams in an alternate historical rendition of Sengoku Japan, chasing after a man named Edward Kelly in a more fantastical version of said time period. Nioh 2 went in a different direction story-wise, and largely gameplay wise, moving to a customizable main character with two forms, adding co-op and making it more of an action-based affair.

Nioh 3 may be looking to dial it back, if only slightly, as the big gameplay thing revealed thus far is a switch between “samurai” and “ninja” forms. The landscape looks to be hellish and monstrous as ever, and it’s to be determined where on the timeline, if anywhere, it’ll be landing at. This contributor is ecstatic at the series’ return, and is highly curious about what Team Ninja and Koei Tecmo have in store this time.

There is no official release date, other than “early 2026.” It’s also, presently, only announced for the PS5.

What do you think? Are you as surprised by Nioh’s resurgence as we were? Any fondness for the series of your own? Please, let us know!
