Ubisoft Dev: Heavy Rain Is A Glimpse Of The Future

Heavy Rain is one of those games that can have a tremendous impact on a player. Just ask Ubisoft associate producer for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood , Jean-Francois Boivin.

In speaking to VideoGamer , Boivin believes that at some point in the future, games and movies will actually merge into one entertainment medium. He talks about a film/game of either Assassin's Creed or Spider-Man ; you'd just pop it into your machine and have the option of watching or playing right from the start. "And it's the same quality; the same thing," he said. You could watch a scene and be like, "Oh, I love this scene – I'm going to play this scene." And to think this won't ever happen is like us thinking gaming couldn't ever get any better than Super Mario Bros. after the Atari, Colecovision and Intellivision. Furthermore, because Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain is already pretty darn close to an interactive movie, Boivin mentions the game…and tosses in some very high praise:

"I can see that happening, and we're starting to have a glimpse of the possibility with games like Heavy Rain – which, I have to say, changed my life. It changed my entire look outlook on interactive entertainment. This is a glimpse of how we're going to bring the video game industry to the next level of commercialism. I can see my mum playing a game like Heavy Rain – [something] much more accessible, obviously, but just the murder mystery and choosing where you want to go and having 22 different endings and just wanting to re-play that story over and over again… I can see that happening."

There are so many reasons to experience Heavy Rain , and one of those reasons is the immense amount of respect given to the game, not from gamers only, but also from other designers and developers. And as for the idea of games and movies merging…well, sure. Maybe that'll save Hollywood. 'cough'
