What does RAGE have to do with the original DOOM classics?
Well, at first glance, absolutely nothing. id Software produced all of them but that's about the only similarity. Still, it's interesting how the team used a "stripped down" version of the RAGE technology to bring DOOM and DOOM 2 to the PlayStation 3. They'll be arriving with the anticipated DOOM 3 BFG Edition , which hits this fall.
As id Software Creative Director Tim Willits told Joystiq , they actually used id Tech 5 for those DOOM installments. id Tech 5 debuted with last year's RAGE . Said Willits:
"We never released Doom 1 and Doom 2 on the PlayStation Network. So we're like, 'OK, what's the easiest way to do this?' And what the guys did instead of rewriting all the network support, [support for] friends, and all that kind of stuff, is they took Rage, took out all the 'Rage' bits and put Doom 1 and 2 on top of it."
Willits also said that when PS3 players start those DOOM classics in October, they'll be "launching most of id Tech 5," with a "game loop that runs Doom 1 and Doom 2." And just to be clear, we still say RAGE is possibly the most impressive graphical title of the generation next to Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception . You've got to see it to believe it.
