A new IP is a tough sell; a new JRPG could be self-imposed financial suicide in the current atmosphere.
That didn't deter Level-5 and Studio Ghibli from giving us one of the highest rated (and most nostalgic) games of 2013 in Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch . Publisher Namco Bandai has announced that the charming JRPG endeavor that touched so many hearts this year has reached worldwide sales of about 1.4 million copies according to IGN.
We should note that this also includes the Japan-only title Ni No Kuni on 3DS. Still though, that is an admirable figure for a game in an increasingly niche genre. Perhaps it just goes to show that quality and giving genre fans what they want matters more than mass appeal.
Could this spark more entries in the franchise? I would sure like to see it so but I'm still waiting for more Dark Cloud and Rogue Galaxy while pondering what Level-5 might be working on for PS4.

Nice David. You the man. Hopefully Ben ships you some sweet games 😉
Thanks other David 🙂 I'm doin' my best!
@World, thank you for keeping me entertained while I am at work andIi get a few moments to check PSX. I am aware that Mr. Ben Dutka is away. It's like he never left!
Hey you're welcome Killa 🙂

I thought when a dog pees on the carpet you rub his nose in it and let it know its been a bad dog well the consumer have been doing that to sqeenix and we got two more abominations lol that's a really bad dog
the final nail in the S-E coffin will be when S-E reveals FFXIII remake for PS4 =p
Dude if they did that……… Well you know what happens to old yeller
There was a mistranslation and they are rubbing OUR noses in the XIII disaster.
I hope that this goes on to sell even more. It seems like that number is a little low consider all the people who have been playing it, around where I live and just in general.
Hopefully this number increases over time steadily because this game was really something special.
I also hope level 5 makes something really cool for the PS4. Either a new IP or a sequel to one of their games that never got one, like Rogue Galaxy, or Dark Cloud 3 🙂
It's a wonderful game and I hope it goes on to sell considerably more. It definitely deserves it.
Sales will probably increase a bit, in the last month I've seen plenty of sales for the game including the actual price at retailers without a sale coming down.
I loved this game… it was very nostalgic. It was like Pokemon for the JRPG loving adults.
I wish the game would have been harder though. I'm glad it did well.
I think 1.4 million is disappointing…
I think it's pretty good, but I definitely think it should have sold more imo.
Played the demo for this and it is high on my list of games needing to be bought.
This deserves all the sales it gets. Come on people mooore!
I want a new Dark Chronicle/Cloud… 🙁
well good for these guys a good sell i hope it helps the industry some how.
happy gaming =)
Loved this game. It remains the only Platinum Trophy I've cared to achieve. Bonus for me: My daughter further developed her reading skills over the summer by reading aloud every subtitle while I played. Entering 3rd grade, she now reads at a 5th grade level comprehension.
That's excellent.
Very cool.
Final Fantasy VII taught me all the English I know when I migrated to NZ in 2000. Cheers to my neighbour who lended it to me, I couldn't really speak to him or read haha.
Proud contributor to that figure 🙂
I was very excited for the game, but I have to admit, i lost interest. The story was just dragging on. There was one part whereI entered a new town and had to leave buy ship, but to get a pass on the ship I had to return to the previous town i justspent an hour in to do another task – it was just really tedious.
I may get back to it one day, but for now it is left incomplete, I think playing Xenoblade:Chronicles one of the best JRPG's I'lve ever played just before it also didn't help matters…
There's a fast travel spell and a dragon later
that's fairly close to the beginning of the game
This is just a great game with a lot of charm. Also has a good score. I fell in love with it early on. The fact that it helped Freqazoid's daughter read better is aweome too.
Unfortunately my ps3 Hard drive had to be wiped twice since I bought it, and i forgot to save the games to my online storage (twice), so I've had to start it over twice. On my third attempt at playing through I am back near my furthest point the first time.
I wouldn't mind some DLC and DEFINITELY wouldn't my a sequel/spiritual successor
