On A Scale Of 1-10, How Would You Rate PS4’s Launch Lineup?

The PlayStation will launch with 22 games , which isn't bad.

Comparatively speaking, with the original PlayStation launching with only 10 titles and the PS3 releasing with 14, having 22 right off the bat for the PS4 is encouraging. The PS2 had 27 at launch but then again, there has been no other video game console in history to dominate as the PS2 did.

So, in terms of sheer number (22), the launch is better than decent, right? But what about the games themselves? Well, I definitely wanted to see more exclusive titles; Killzone: Shadow Fall , Knack and a few downloadable games are fine, but I think we could've used at least one more big Sony exclusive. Furthermore, it looks like there are several throwaway titles on the list, like Pinball Arcade and Tiny Brains . Maybe "throwaway" is too insulting; those titles might be good, but they certainly aren't convincing anyone to buy a PS4.

On the flip side, there are several huge third-party titles, which we usually don't get with new system launches. Call of Duty: Ghosts , Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , Battlefield 4 and Skylanders SWAP Force are big-name titles, and they're all ready to go at launch. Those really do help. All in all, if we take into account console launch lineups in gaming history, compare it to the competition (and I believe Xbox One's lineup is a touch better), and analyze the games themselves, I'd say the PS4's initial list of titles earns a 7. What do you say? Too high or too low?

Cross gen games aren't next gen so they don't count, junk games like Angry Birds don't count, small games have nothing to do with the new tech so they don't count, so it's really just 2 games at this point.

On a 1-10 scale I'd give it a 2.

I wonder if trans-generational franchises will stick around a little longer this gen. That is, I don't feel so certain CoD and AC will shed it's current gen core so soon and we'll see another Holiday season where there's design parity between the two generations.

Wait, what I'm hearing, a lot of multiplat games provide HD graphics. How can that not be next gen. All of sudden HD graphics are not good enough for you, tsk tsk.

In some cases cross-gen games don't count, but something like BF4 is pretty much a different game (MP) on PS4 vis-a-vis PS3.

The Ps4 has my interest but solely just because I love the PlayStation brand and not the launch lineup. I do agree with you Ben that the Xbox One has a slightly more better lineup, now if we didn't lose out on Driveclub at launch then it would be much more compelling.

Killer Instinct and Dead Rising I'm actually interested, sucks we don't have something like that for the Ps4 🙁

While I wish Dead Rising 3 would be on PS4 I'm not getting good vibes for KI. Its not developed by Rare (who did the original) and the current dev doesn't have a great track record nor have they developed a fighting game before.

I agree and wish the ps4 did have Dead Rising 3. Its a shame that these once multi platform games go exclusive and alienate the fans they had.

I loved Killer Instinct, I was all about it at the arcades and even that unexpected SNES version, but I too have a bad feeling about what I've seen. It's still a good idea to have it at launch, but I'm not expecting it to blow people away. Can a purely combo-based fighter even survive in todays twitchy world? You couldn't even play that game without doing serious study sessions in the past.

Temjin001

I want the new KI also but I do agree it looks lower quality in the animation department. It has a choppiness to it's movements that really bothers me, like MK style choppiness. The japanese are so much better at animating fighting games as far as I'm concerned. Something like DOA and Soul Calibur move so much better.

Temjin001

and I doubt KI is going to draw in the masses. The game is fan service. It's actually cool for MS to have approved this project.
The problem I see is that KI became one of the epitomes of 'canned combos' back in the day. It was an early example of strings that carried on for far too long and dealt far too much damage. The fighting community rejected KI for being too easy and not having enough of a skill based emphasis. Most fighters these days have long since abandoned an emphasis on lengthy strings and have gone more the skill-based route. Where creating combos happens in real time by carefully studying frame data and seeing how certain moves can flow together much better than others. I really do study frame data in DOA5 U, because it gives me a much better understanding of the attributes my character has in possession. A lot of it feels self evident in play, but I garuntee a person will find out things about their character a lot quicker if they look at the fine grained mechanics of how they work.

5/10 theres no game in that lineup I'm interested, but at least it looks like this gonna be the multi platform from excellence, so those people that are hyped for games like Battlefield, Assassins Creed or Watch Dogs sure gonna have a blast this Christmas with the Ps4.

I'm gonna get one when InFamous gets released 🙂

A 7. It's going to have AAA titles like Battlefield 4, CoD: Ghosts, ACIV, Killzone, Madden 25 and the game I will buy on Day One in Knack. The PSN stuff sounds very interesting. Yes, if Watch Dogs and DriveClub were there, it would be even better. If you didn't buy some of the games on the PS3/360/PC, it's a strong launch. I'm more excited for the future.

Right now, the line up is on par with other launches in the past. Doesn't matter if Xbone has a better lineup either. I know the real games are coming and Shadow Fall, Resogun, Contrast, Octodad, the free to play games and others as well as the not far off major release of Infamous Second Son should keep me busy til then.

5 out of 10. I would love to play a next gen Killzone but at this stage I might just hold off for a year and get one later with a price cut, some patching, game discounts and a second wave of games. May need some discipline to hold off for a year. I'm sure my wife will see to it!

I couldn't give it a number. I'll just say meh…at this point it's likely I'll hold off on getting a PS4 until MGS5 comes out. I wanna say I'll get it for inFamoua but I'm not certain I can or I will.

I couldn't be less interested in the line-up…

If Killzone:SF looked more like KZ2, I'd be at least a little intrigued. But now it looks more like something between KZ3 and COD, which is sad.

And while I know Naughty Dog still exist, I feel the same way now after TLOU as I did after Uncharted 2 "there's no way they're gunna top this". And then y'know, Uncharted 3 and all, so I don't know what to think. I maybe think my purchase of a PS4 hinges on what Naughty Dog & MediaMolecule do next. And that's possibly years from now.

I feel so bad for not being excited by the next Playstation lol…WHERE HAS MY PRIDE GONE!

Lol, right world? It's unclear to me whether ground zeros and phantom menace are two separate games. Anyone know more on this, please let me know.

Liam, a new launch is always rough for most consoles. There's nothing on Xbone that gets my gaming juices flowing either. And really the only reason I jump on Nintendo's new hardware at launch is they always come in at a cheaper price point and I can usually find something to so with it until the games start flowing. With Playstation, not so much. I think my PS3 collected dust until MGS4 was released.

Keep in mind, Liam, the ND split into two teams in tandem working on TLOU and U3, separately, and the leadership that headed U2's development were the ones who made TLOU.

A high score is at least one new game across at least 4 genres.

With Injustice, Killzone, and Knack, I give it a 5. Though Injustice is a current gen game, it's the visually enhanced GOTY edition with some PS4 specific features, and i'd rather have that than whatever scam Killer Instinct is.

Nothing on the line-up that interests me at all. DC Universe and Battlefield, I play on PC. The rest of that list holds no appeal whatsoever. That's why I'm not even worried about picking up a PS4 until way further down the road.

Id give it an 8. I really dont have a problem with this line up at all. Killzone and Knack will keep me busy for a while anyway. Then there is CoD, which most of my friends will be getting so I will probably as well.

I'll say six. The presence of a few big AAA titles is what really sells it, even if they are cross-gen games. I mean, BF4, CoD, Injustice and Skylanders may not appeal to me, but three of those four are huge brands nowadays. Having Knack and Killzone in there is a sweet bonus, but there is still a lack of anything to really capture the imagination. I kinda wish that Sony had ramped up development of inFamous to get into position as a launch title and left KZ for later, just because there already are other big FPS games releasing that are likely to cannibalise its sales potential..

But more interesting games would have pushed it over the edge. That's not to say that things like Resogun and Warframe aren't interesting. They're just not easy sells.

two first party launch titles from the company who owns THE largest first party library in the industry!
and one of those being a yawn ANOTHER shooter, and one in a franchise which has always been pretty meh at that.
and the other being, well, a pretty basic boring platformer.
i really had high hopes for knack it screamed crash bandicoot, and mark being at the helm, the guy who quite frankly has never made a bad game.
expectations were high, and my god were they plummeted faster than your stomach after the tower of terror!
crash has more complexity in one level than the 30+ minutes i got to play knack.
RE5 disappointment to say the least.

coupled to that no third party exclusives, coupled to that no next gen exclusives, ie all the third party games will be out on other systems earlier.
so all in all theres what, zero games worth buying the ps4 for?
all the third party games you can get sooner, and more importantly CHEAPER!
and the exclusives, the things that actually sell the system, well one word.
YAWN!
if that does not define a zero, well, what does!?
so i gotta break the rules and move the scale, move it from 0-10 and the ps4 lineup gets a 0!

2/10 – Hear me out…:
The main reason it is not any lowers is because they have bothered to get one recognizable franchise in Killzone… I just don't care for it that's all, but I can see how others may.

The only other appealing feature is the price. But looking at how that is set back by having to have PS+ to go online that no longer seems reasonable.

Other than that, everything I keep hearing about the PS4 gets worse and worse, not CD/mp3 compatibility being the most recent offender and without any interesting titles or backwards compatibility, as of now the PS4 just has nothing to offer me. Noting at all.

I know in time I will want one. but rating the appeal of the console right now… I just cannot get excited for it. For me right now it would be a 0/10, but I'm only giving it a few points for its potential interest in the future.

6/10, not as good as Xbox One's launch lineup but still slightly above average. It's far better than PS3's day one was and much better than Wii U's was. Then there's the more than reasonable $400 price. Could the day one lineup be better? Absolutely and it would've been had DriveClub and Watch_Dogs not been delayed, probably for marketing reasons. At least 2014 looks like it will be a really good year.

Well, my purchase of the PS4 is delayed until Infamous is here. I guess that says it all, really.

It's a friggin' shame about backward compatibility being just a weird flower in the console world. Such a shame.

Now that they can resell us all our old games on every new console there's no reason to include it. Which really sucks because I'm sure PS4 could emulate really well.

Beamboom
Beamboom

Oh indeed – they don't want to miss the opportunity to re-release their games over, and over, and over again. "HD-remake", "HD texture remake" , "4k remake", "newgen-remake". Not to mention the golden opportunity to offer streamed rent'a'game of titles already in your collection for earlier platforms.

Can't say I'm diggin' it!

I would have gotten me a PS4 on release day if I could play PS3 titles on it. Like my copy of Far Cry 3, a game I never really got to play. Or finish Dishonoured. GTA5 would have been purchased too.

I know what ya mean, my Far Cry 3 is just sitting there. I played the opening and it was fantastic but for whatever reason I haven't been in the mood, playing on PS4 could have done the job.

Eh, I'd say about a 4.

Yeah, in sheer numbers, 22 is pretty good. But then you take a look at the actual games, and there are only a couple of games worth noting.

Now I don't have any ill-will against indie titles, but taking a step back and looking at it from a general view, 1 AAA title in Killzone: Shadow Fall isn't enough…(I would count Knack as well, but so many people are just dismissing it as a kiddie game 🙁 I was willing to try it simple because of this fact.)

All in all, there's not much to be impressed with, and I'm not afraid to admit that the Xbox One line-up is better.

If Infamous was a launch title….then things would be a little different.
That was my main incentive for getting a PS4.

Solid Fantasy
Solid Fantasy

It's not the greatest line up. As an optimist it's hard for me to say that. KZ:SF is a borderline system seller to me. I might have to look into Knack now that I might be around for launch day.

It's easy to get rapped up in the impact of big name exclusive launch titles after all that we have at our disposal here at the end of the PS3 gen. But those AAA exclusives have accumulated over the past six or so years. The PS3 launch couldn't hold a candle to where it is now in terms of games.

I'd say 5/10 Only becuz The free to plays appeal to me Blacklight and War thunder specifically. The 3rd party support is really good, but I'm agree that 3rd party support doesn't really count, If it does its more of a .5 than a whole point. Cod with extintion mode actually appeals to me as well. Also, more excited for the future tho…

I give the launch lineup a 3 out of 10. The only game I'm interested in is Killzone. I don't like indie games, and I can get the cross gen games on my PS3. And there are no Japanese games and the Japanese get the console last, so there's no games I'm actually interested in except the one. One game is not enough to get me to buy a console so soon.

slugga_status
slugga_status

6 or 7 sounds about right. Don't care that some games I can play now. It's about that next gen leap. Solid cross gen games and at least 2 exclusives is good enough for a launch. The way I look at it is, AC, 2k14, and Shadow Fall will keep me content until inFamous releases.

PC_Max

Not sure really the lineups on both systems are really much to adore. There are some good games on both systems, but not WOW games.

I think next year will be the year things REALLY start to move forward on both systems and the PS4 has some nice exclusives coming its way.

People are already seeing this as some sort of final showdown… the systems have not even launched yet and started their first year of gaming and development.

Give it time!

Keep playing!
