The Witcher 3 Leads This Year’s Game Awards Nominations

If you go by the current critical average, Fallout 4 isn't in the driver's seat for Game of the Year .

However, Metacritic and the Game Awards jury do agree that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one helluva title.

The 2015 Game Awards nominations have been revealed and CD Projekt Red's acclaimed action/RPG leads the way with 7 total nominations, including a nod for overall Game of the Year. The other GotY candidates include the aforementioned Fallout 4 , along with Bloodborne , Super Mario Maker and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain . MGSV is second to The Witcher 3 with 5 nominations.

The Witcher 3 also nabbed nominations for Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score/Soundtrack, Best Performance, and Best Role-Playing Game, while CD Projekt Red was nominated for Developer of the Year. If you're wondering, the nominees were chosen by a jury of 32 international media members and to be considered, a game had to have a release date prior to November 24.

Click through the link above to see the full list of nominations. The Game Awards will air on December 3 at 6 p.m. PDT; it's the product of media veteran Geoff Keighley, and he expects over 2 million people to check it out .

One personal note: The Witcher 3 can only qualify if we're allowed to view the game as it is now , as opposed to the mess it was at launch. Otherwise, it's not in the running.

Can't agree, there it's a problem on Witcher 3 that it's a constant and no… actually I don't mind much the ton of bugs and patches, it's the combat!, it's the most awful combat system of all the games I played this gen, if wasn't for that Witcher 3 would be my GotY.

My GotY it's a draw, Fallout 4 and Bloodborne.

No offense, but it sounds to me like you really didn't know what you were doing. Combat isn't like that for me at all and there's certainly nothing wrong with the responsiveness of the controls. There was some momentum physics that you can cancel out with a later update (a new control scheme that I do actually use), but that's not what "clunky" means. That means the control itself is slow/awkward and I doubt anyone has ever used that terminology to describe The Witcher 3.

And there's absolutely nothing wrong with the camera.

If you put the game in the hardest mode the combat makes sense.

In casual mode it isn't even interesting to be honest.

That's the true test of a good combat system imo. If it scales well with the difficulty level without it feeling like you're incapable from creating strategies to succeed. Strategies that don't rely on exploits but instead force you to trust and execute with precision the combat system they have in place. I'd have to check out the group combat again in Witcher as of now but I remember heavier scenes would become ridiculously choppy. In fact, I remember being with the red haired girl while they were going to torture her and instead we cut loose and took out the whole fort together. Yea. Complete slide show paired with sloppy AI crap. It was right around after that I decided to shelve the game until it was fixed (made it to Skelliage though)

I think if a game improves enough (or somehow becomes much worse) with patches it could be re-rated with a versioned subscript with it without it seeming ridiculous.
For better or worse we live in a versioned world when it comes to console software these days. Times have changed.

Seems to me half the core gaming populace just doesn't care if a game has lots of bugs. People should have more apprehension for a Bethesda game these days but that hasn't stopped over 10 million from wanting FO4 week one.

I hate bugs. With a passion. I understand game development is more complicated today but c'mon! If Kojima Pro can build a game as complex with nearly flawless performance as MGS5, that ought to count for something. Western developers need to step it up.

I agree bugs suck but most don't seem to care, even critics. Fallout 4 also has tons of bugs, as did Witcher (probably still does) but it seems like a minor issue in the eyes of the majority core gamer.

Theres no hope to change the dev standard of games these days when so many ignore the problems. If Witcher 3 walks off that stage with a gold meldal they just set a new precedent. Ship your broken game whenever, it's okay. We'll still love you.

I think though at the end of the day we're looking at what a game looks like at the end of 2015.

Perhaps things like publisher and developer of the year awards are where recognition goes for superbly executed game launches.

Jawk, the world in MGS5 is dead, there is hardly anything going on. The enemies patrol very predictably, and there aren't massive quest lines, and things that can alter the world, FO3 have Nuketown or whatever that place was called.

There is way more going on in The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 than MGS5.

Now this doesn't mean they are better games but one is going to have more potential for bugs.

Jawknee
Jawknee

It isn't dead. There's outposts and guard posts everywhere. They're remote areas under military occupation. What would be the point of having a bunch of civilian NPC's roaming around? They would serve no purpose to the narrative of the game. With that said, there is still plenty left to do. Not to mention the AI varied in difficulty depending on how you play.

MGS5 does have bugs though. I played a bugged out mission myself. I even took a video of my horse stuck on the side of a cliff repeating a jumping animation over and over again. It's hilarious actually because the camera shakes each time he is supposed to be hitting the ground… even when I'm not mounted. I tried to upload it to youTube but I get an error everytime, not sure why. Maybe MGSV is blocked from vid sharing?

Anyway. Yes. MGSV is considerably less buggy than most AND it performs much faster. But yes, it's not dealing with a virtual society (aside from Motherbase, if that counts). Nope. Mostly just a whole bunch of guards (and animals) standing around protecting camps on big maps.

Yea I've seen the occasional man stuck in wall but only twice out of 500+ hours of play.

Also you have to keep in mind the entire map is loaded and running constantly while deployed. For example I cleared an outpost on one end of the map and forced all the guards to lay down. I spent a couple hours clearing all the available side ops and collecting all the collectibles across the whole of Afghanistan. When I finally made my way back over to that post, the guards were still laying there. Lol

Cool. This year, for me, bugs or not, would probably be the hardest goty choice I've seen in a very long time, if not ever. It's definitely not 2014 anymore.

The whole Bloodborne, Witcher 3, MGSV, FO4 showdown is so tough because all of them appeal so very well to each of their genre audiences. Any of them could be respectably anyone's goty. And any of them are equally hardcore.

Jawk, the outposts are for the most part copy and pasted, in afganistan most outposts have 4 guards, one in a tower and its very easy to sleep everyone.

The game is constantly talking about rebels fighting the russians and we never see any of this going on. THAT would be a living world, running around and seeing two factions fighting each other.

There is hardly any wildlife, and the amount of running to the missions in this open world is boring and takes way to long. There are some resources to collect sure but other than that I don't see why the game had to be so large with so little to do in it.

I'm not bashing the game either, I just think that it is obvious Kojima was not working on this game very long, it is lacking his over all signature.

The story was a huge let down and I didn't beat the game I'm watching the cutscenes on youtube.

I think the game should have been smaller and more focused and Konami shoudln't have screwed with things because for me at least it is painfully obvious that they did.

Jawknee

Lol dude, what you are complaining about though is a non issue. I've heard nothing but complaints and conspiracy theories about Konami from people who didn't like the open nature of the game. You obviously haven't spent enough time playing to understand the depth that is there. The game set out to give the player the freedom to be Big Boss and build Outerhaven while tying it into the MSX Metal Gear. Everything from the side ops, the mission tasks, S ranks, to building Motherbase and FOB's and invading and defense, to the RTC lite combat deployment missions, the the hundreds of developement projects, and the hundreds of way to customize all the weapons, to using non Big Boss characters on deployments to build their ranks, to the stellar buddy system, Quiet and D-Dog.

I'm not going to pretend it has the best story of all the Metal Gears but it is the best VIDEO GAME of the series. The best third person stealth action that's been made in the past 10 years for sure. The game is a beast and it honestly just sounds like you were expecting this to be some gigantic RPG like the Witcher. It isn't. It's Metal Gear. Or maybe you were expecting it to be another 12 hour linear cutscenes driven game like the past games. In which case that blame lies on you since Kojima was pretty clear about what kind of game MGS5 was going to be as far back as 2008. He was praising GTA and stating he wanted to make a open world Metal Gear only months after MGS4 was released.

"I'm not bashing the game either, I just think that it is obvious Kojima was not working on this game very long, it is lacking his over all signature."

No offense but this is nonsense. His signature is all over this game. If he wasn't working on the game. You would see that if you spent enough time with it. Again, this is just speculation on your part because he didn't make the game you wanted.

It's fine if you didn't like he game. But to pretend as if Kojima was forced to make a game he didn't want to make or that he "didn't work on it much" is just bizarre.

Half of this stuff felt like things you would see in a mobile game, surprise from Konami. The resource gathering, and upgrading your base is boring sorry, it felt like something I would play on my iphone.

This is just filler, I don't hate open world games and I didn't want it to be an RPG, I wanted it to have more variety and hand crafted feeling missions and enemy placements.

The game feels like someone built it in procedural generator engine and just moved some stuff around.

It doesn't feel like a Kojima game to me, and many others there are a lot of people who feel like the game didn't hit its full potential. If he wanted it to be like GTA5 he missed the mark in variety and world liveliness.

Sure it plays great, control wise but there is no reason to explore the variety the game offers you in the missions. I tranqued and stealthed up until the half way mark I got to without a problem, I didn't see a need to have to change up my playstyle, I got Foxhound rank on a bunch of missions and Octopus on others.

It is my fault true for not exploring the other combat options but I wanted the game to force me into situations where i had to use everything at my disposal, not simply say here are some toys do what you want and we wont punish you there is not right or wrong.

Now if you are going for 100% completionist then you have to do all the variety the mission tasks ask of you, however for most people who want to play through the game there is little reason to unlock all the stuff in the game, develop stuff etc.

It is a big although dead sandbox with a lot of toys in it I wont deny that, but it is lacking in my opinion the Kojima charm, and 100% lacking in the story department.

Before you say I didn't get far enough, I put at least 20 hours into the game, thats more than enough time for a game to hook me and it just didn't.

I don't think it is a conspiracy again its my opinion and how I felt when playing the game that made me come to the conclusion that it doesn't feel like a Kojima game.

You get very heated when people don't see eye to eye with you on what games are "the best" nothing you say or I say will change the others mind, I'm trying to explain to you why the MGS5 experience was just dull for me.

Jawknee
Jawknee

Lol, not heated nor do I care if you agree. You're complaints are silly and unfounded. Again no offense. When you make states like "it's clear Kojima didn't work much on the game" it kinda invalidates the rest your post. It's a nonsensical conclusion to come away with not only because it's obvious his signature is all over the game but because you have no evidence to back that up. Only speculation on your part because again, he didn't make the game you wanted or expected.

xenris

It is clear to me, the bosses are uninspired, there is a lot of filler content that feels like it is ripped from mobile gaming, they replaced Hayter to get a more emotional Snake…who rarely talks, the story took a huge hit.

These are all things that Kojima prides himself on. Think about it, his help with Castlevania was what made the story, the cinematography and everything else a little tighter. He from what I read had nothing to do with gameplay.

Its a solid game, but not a solid MGS experience.

You use a lot of trigger words, so to me it seems like you are heated. Something similar happened when I didn't think The Last of Us was the second coming.

My evidence is that it doesn't feel like a Kojima game because of all the filler, the story, the poor bosses, the cut chapter, and the fact that half of the things you are touting as great and genre defining are things that one would find in a mobile game. Collecting resources is boring and grindy and nothing but padding, the side ops except for a handful that I played and I played about 30 felt like rinse and repeats.

And my evidence for the world feeling dead is because it does, there are all these guards patrolling outposts against a rebel army and you don't even witness this fighting break out in the game. It is almost as if all the defense is just for Big Boss.

After playing P.T. this feels so far removed from what Kojima does I can't help but feel he wasn't super involved.

I also want to know why they wanted to take his name off the game.

Bloodborne is the easiest out of all the Souls styled games, you should have no problem getting into it.

If you are having trouble co op helps a lot. There are only a couple of areas where the boss fights spike really high but even those are more because you have to try something different than what you were doing before.

Scores won't stop it from getting GOTY. Remember 2013? Remember 2012? Walking Dead got GOTY over DISHONORED.

And even though The Last Of Us scored the highest, GTAV got GOTY. Fallout 4 is going to win this without really trying. Every Bethesda game has gotten GOTY. Its essentially a trend. And I mean numbered Bethesda games, like TES and Fallout.

We get it, Fallout 4 isn't GOTY to you because you hate the setting! Stop name dropping 😉

I honestly hope MGSV wins over Witcher 3. But then again, W3 put narrative over all and blew away its competition. But that MGSV was/is a beast. Fallout 4 needs to get some love too. Bloodborne ain't winning ish when compared to those giants. Great nonetheless.
