FFXV Director: We Wanted A “Boys Will Be Boys” Attitude

If you hadn't noticed, there are no female characters in the core adventuring party in Final Fantasy XV .

While we're all sure certain people will leap atop a soapbox and call it sexist, Square Enix has an explanation. During a recent GameSpot interview , FFXV director Hajime Tabata says such a setup is simply more "accessible:"

"Speaking honestly, an all-male party feels almost more approachable for players. Even the presence of one female in the group will change their behaviour, so that they'll act differently. So to give the most natural feeling, to make them feel sincere and honest, having them all the same gender made sense in that way."

Tabata thinks the journey sort of embraces the "boys will be boys" attitude and it's "the story we wanted to tell." That's not good news, as far as I'm concerned, because "boys will be boys" usually relates to something inane and stupid…like a bombastic action sequence. But whatever.

As for the game's completion percentage, Tabata said the project is approximately 80 percent complete. Back in February, he said it was only 60 percent finished, but that estimate related to the demo (which recently released with Final Fantasy Type-0 ). Said Tabata:

"To clarify on that 60 percent figure, it's the playable demo that represents the 60 percent, which is what [I] was referring to in February. The main challenge right now is taking all the lessons we learned from making the demo and turning them into something positive to bring to the full game."

I still don't see how it can be done by the end of the year but you never know. If you played the FFXV demo, are you excited? Or did it just confirm your belief that the series is indeed dead?

Great. Final Fantasy always needed more bromance.

Yeah it feels that way in the demo and so far (I've only had a chance to play 1/3rd of it) but it isn't crass or anything yet.

I do prefer females in my group because FF is usually a fully Human drama but this is not FF by any standard I can see. It seems much like an open world Western mission based RPG. Clearly SE is going forward with their former plan.

Also I take issue with the idea that a couple gals would change the group dynamic, that's more of a cultural Japanese thing. In other games women are usually treated as part of the gang but that's their prerogetive.

I just hope it isn't a total sausagefest cuz that's no fun either.

So far it's the only decent thing on the Final Fantasy Type-0 disc cuz that game is not worthy of console play, just portable time killing.

I'm not crazy about XV's fighting system either but maybe it'll be tweaked. Once you hit your enemy they pretty much get away and your giant weapon counts for nothing as it swings at air even if the blades connect on the side or back end.

You said that but I'm sure if a extremely hot girl out of the blue joins your group of friends some of them gonna change and adjust their behavior.

Depends on the group, I guess. In my circle of friends, the girls can be equally crass. My wife's got a way worse potty mouth than I do. Women are adults, too. I can honestly say in my group, they would not behave any differently. Or rather, -don't- behave any differently.

Cool Sol I'll accept.

On the girls, I mean yeah in real life you might change cuz you wanna get in their pants but in a game you could just let them be the same.

Would be weird just imagine Cloud not changing his personality for Tifa and Aerith, two hot and cute girls that interacted with him in a way that a man wouldn't do, the plot of the game would be different.

You gotta admit that there are some things bros only do with bros only around. For one thing, they can camp in one tent. Imagine 4 guys and one girl in a tent. That just changes the dynamic imo. This group might display the closest feel of commodity and chemistry out of all the final fantasy group, without the use of any romantic relationship within the group. The fact that they are close in age should ascend that chemistry as well.

I totally got a date with Barrett once. It was really hard, though. Needed a guide.

This will 100% cause the social justice warriors to get their panties in a bunch.

I however welcome the bromance!

SE has always had awesome female characters in their games. Wish they wouldn't stop now. Maybe there's some mid-game additions to your party?

of course theres gonna be more characters added. its final fantasy. im willing to bet one or two of the brosefs die along the way and replaced with a woman or 2. or even possible love interest that shows brosefs what life is all about outside of their world and what the meaning of "life" and this new found magic is, other than driving around bumping wham.

FFX-2 is also a game composed by a single gender, in case, female characters. If there was only females in the game, I think people would not complain like that.

I think a lot of people complained about X-2. Not only was it only girls (which isn't necessarily bad, just like all dudes isn't), they gave them overly bubbly j-pop personalities. I hope they don't give these gents terribly stereotypical bro-type personalities.

Just because there aren't going to be Female characters in the party doesn't mean there wont be interesting female characters in the game. Cidney could become fleshed out, if they decide too, or they could keep her as eye candy.

We know that Noctis has a love interest and there is a romeo-juliet thing going on, or at least in older trailers we saw that stuff. There could be female villians and good guys that help move the story forward as well.

I don't think boys will be boys = action sequence. To me it just means things that boys tend to do, oogle girls together, prank people, get into scraps, etc. I think the sentence has a lot of meaning, and it might mean something completely different to Japanese people.

As for the demo I beat it, and grinded so I could beat the behemeth without summoning Ramuh. Which by the way proves that it is an RPG because no matter how bad a#@ twitch skilled you are you aren't going to beat him without leveling up your character, you just don't do enough damage. If someone did manage to beat him at a low level well I would refer to the list of games that are RPGs that people do level 1 run throughs in, FF10 included 😛

I really enjoyed it, however there were obvious problems with the demo, the framerate would get terrible sometimes, the combat does need tweaking I don't mind the slowness, but it needs more customization, and I want to get a look at abilities, and the co op moves etc.

The game has a lot of potential and I think that it will come together.

The only way it is releasing this year is if they have a lot of the story, and gameplay elements done and they are just in the process of porting things over from their old e32013 engine, to the new luminous engine they are using now.

This could be why in a month they are up to 80% complete, they might just be porting things over and then combing for bugs, and polishing.

If it's all that hard to beat the Behemoth and there's nothing much else in the demo then maybe I won't finish it after all. I wanted some kind of story stuff not all grinding.

Sorry world. Not much story, but I thought it was fine. It would provide zero story to the story while providing a tease for the games feel and gameplay. Actually most demos feel this way to me.

World there is a teaser trailer of sorts after you beat it but you can just look it up online.

Once there is a good story, I have no problem with this. Having an all girl or all boy cast definitely affects the tone and the direction in which you can take your story. I can only hope that it doesn't become too macho, but I could applaud them for such a move. Sometimes, putting in specific types of characters to appease the several groups out there is not conducive to the story you might want to tell.

And with that note, here's hoping that the story is a worthy one that makes limiting the dynamic of having male and female characters on some kind of dangerous road trip seem more ingenious than some fans' initial impressions.

That kind of thing is ok with me, but it does invite too much opportunity for try-hard, poor writing. Hopefully they can bypass that and deliver a good story.

Typically, the less diverse a group, the less you have to work with. But that doesn't mean it -will- be bad.

Here's hoping!

Let's just allow developers to make the games they want to make and let the market forces pick the winners and losers. Beta males need to stop trying to shoehorn the feminist agenda into gaming. Let them evolve on their own.

Gameplay is far from button mashing or devil may cry or whatever. You have several abilities, lots of combination, and actually have to aim properly at the enemy. We still yet to see the magic side or the more powerful moves and co-op maneuvers.

I'm loving the real time. Transition from battle to end of battle is way every game should be imo. Your see an enemy in the field, you fight it and move on. The whole menu and leveling stuff is taken care at camp. Also the ability to pause to use potion and whatnot is a very good idea imo.

Can't wait to see this game get released.

Well, I don't see the problem with it. Game developers shouldn't have to include female characters in their game to fill some sort of "checklist".

I'd rather characters that were created in mind of the plot; providing good character interactions, progression and development.

Shoehorning in a female, "Just because there are none" doesn't make sense whatsoever.
