It seems like every game these days has to have multiplayer. It's becoming a law or something.
However, as recent reports have confirmed , the highly anticipated inFamous: Second Son will not feature a multiplayer mode of any kind. This has been met with a mixed reception from gamers and journalists.
As an open-world sandbox game, there will certainly be enough content to keep us entertained, so multiplayer isn't essential. Furthermore, this means the developer has focused 100% of its resources on producing the best single-player adventure possible, which is very good news for those who still appreciate campaign quality. Sucker Punch knows what they're doing, and I think they know multiplayer isn't a deal-breaker for a game like Second Son . And that's true; I doubt anybody would buy the game specifically for online multiplayer.
However, we've seen great examples of open-world multiplayer before. Last year's Grand Theft Auto V was fantastic, for instance. Then again, Sucker Punch probably didn't have the absolutely massive resources Rockstar enjoyed for the creation and production of GTAV. I say that, despite the possibilities, it's best that the designers didn't opt to tangle with multiplayer for the inFamous sequel. The bottom line is that while it could've been an asset, we really didn't need it. The game will offer a huge amount of entertainment as is, I'm sure.

It seems really odd for a developer to say a game doesn't have online capabilities. This is 2014, after all. I think they should, as it will attract a bigger fanbase.
Besides, why not have multiplayer? What have they got to lose, especially on a powerful machine like the PS4?

An extra year of development time.
I care, cause it seems that some games that have a SP & MP mode, then their SP mode gets neglected and/or shortened because of it, & the whole SP mode winds up suffering for it.
Just my opinion.
I hope this game is a long one if it doesn't have a multiplayer. All focus went to the single player. I'm anticipating minimum 15 hours of playtime and a huge world.
I care. Because I'm utterly ecstatic that there is no multiplayer. It's a great thing to know for certain.
That being said, I reckon it would be pretty cool to have a dozen (more would be better, methinks) players as members of the DUP with conventional weapons and human abilities against a single conduit. 🙂
That tells me straight up that it's going to be a better experience at its core. When multiplayer is there then everything is built with that in mind and everything suffers. When something is made for the single player only then that campaign benefits tremendously.
Where is this "mixed reception" coming from? Anyone who knows anything about inFamous should know this was always and should be a single player experience. Is it now an expectation? Maybe, but I can live without it.
As WorldEnds says above, another year of development time added on and that would not be enough in my eyes. Multiplayer may be common nowadays but there are too many variables to creating a compelling multiplayer experience.
Don't care one bit.
I am extremely happy Imfamous: Second Son won't have multiplayer. It has no business being in a game like Imfamous. Another example would have been God of War. Multiplayer should never have been in that.
Yes, the new God of War is a perfect example of what happens when you force multiplayer into a single player game, splitting development resources from the single player experience into creating the multiplayer part – the single player "campaign" suffers, the multiplayer feels forced and won't get popular anyway, and they won't get any higher sales just because of adding "multiplayer" on the box either.
Didnt want multiplayer anyway
I've gotten tons of playtime out of Infamous 1 & 2 and I'm sure Second son will deliver plenty without MP.
Personally I don't understand why MP has become such a huge deal. I used to love MP, when it involved getting friends together and smack talking with people you know.
I will however never understand this social reclusive behavior where you sit alone and game with a bunch of people you don't know.
I know from sales numbers I'm in the minority here, so I guess I'm the weird one, but I'm ok with that and I'm happy Second son is SP only.
To be fair, it's not necessarily people you don't know. I own a couple of FPS on the pc (counter strike, the first MW, and battlefield 3) mostly just to play with people I know. The atmosphere is fairly similar to doing it in person, except your screaming at each other over headsets instead of in their faces and no one can accuse you of screen watching.
do i what?
seriously, whos been proofreading these article headlines lately!?
its a shame it does not have it though, the IGC content of infamous 2 was really cool and extended the lifespan of the game.
but this is their first ps4 game, so id rather them spend their time perfecting the game engine, and putting everything into the campaign.
maybe IGC can come back, bigger and better, in a DLC pack or something.
one thing i REALLY want to see in next gen from now on, lets dispel the myth that games can only have MP DLC.
bioshock and TLoU have at least 1 DLC campaign, so lets make that more of a guaranteed, and less of a once in a blue moon, and lets make it more than 1.
developers CONSTANTLY b*tch that people trade their games in, well instead of whining about it how about you actually DO something about it!
maybe if games did not take 8 hours to finish, and had some replayability, and saw some campaign DLC bringing people back to the game, than they wouldent trade the game in!
TLoU for instance, im only keeping that because i really want to play the DLC.
hell thats the only reason why i kept one of my ps3s!
been sitting in the closet gathering dust for all these months, waiting, waiting for that fateful day………..
man going back to the DS3 is going to be SO painful!

Thank god no multiplayer. But lets have user generated content like they did in the second infamous or was it festival of blood i forget what game it was.
It worked in both of those, but I don't mind it not being there since I never used it. I dunno if it was ever a big hit.
No, not a big deal for me. I am a Single Player gamer with the once in a blue moon try of MP.
With the way things are, free-to-play MP games, etc. does anyone think its possible, later, that a separate free-to-play MP (digital download) may come out? Its possible I think. May depend on Sucker Punch and Sony have in mind.
Keep playing!
Very happy it doesn't have multiplayer. I'm 49 years old and have zero interest in hanging out in the online equivalent of a junior high school playground. Adding multiplayer takes away large amounts of resources from the single player campaign which is a big reason why so many games these days are so drearily mediocre.
Don't care one bit. I'd not play the MP modes of this game anyway.
Don't really care at all long as the single player is great I'll be happy I had already pre-ordered Second Son a while ago so it's not like this would suddenly make me not buy it.
Sure a 2 person free roam would be quite fun but that just takes development away from the main game.
I'm very glad they have the guts to not include a MP component in these days. This will hopefully bring us a better campaign.
Didn't want multiplayer either.
Now I think they could do something awesome if they made a multiplayer game set in the infamous universe where you could pick your powers and fight people in a massive map. That could be cool.
But I always played infamous for the story and I know when you make multiplayer there is a sacrifice so I'm glad they had the chops to keep this MP free.
I'm very happy with this because it means the single player will probably be longer and better than if there was multiplayer, and this kind of game does not need multiplayer.
Don't care for MP,
SP rocks
Infamous never was meant to have MP. I feel it's best experienced in single player and putting all its focus on that aspect is a great move in my opinion.
Awesome! just like GoW this game don't need it, all the resources should of be used for the single player.
Firstly I should state I don't care for the game, inFamous isn't a bad series by anymeans it just isn't for me…
Now onto the more important matter, if this is a single player game let it be. There is no need to force multiplayer aspects whether it be into the story or having a cheap online deathmatch mode assembled. Just look at Tomb Raider, it's a brilliant single player experience with this unrelated added multiplayer mode which is just uninspiring.
But at least that doesn't affect the single player experience and Tomb Raider is still a cracking game. I recently played the Demo for Lightning Returns: FFXIII & was utterly appalled at their attempt for online interaction. The game has random NPC's on the maps which you can activate to share items with… I just don't see the point and seeing all these players stupid usernames is such a distraction. Then there is the notion that I want to even consider linking my game progress to a narcissistic site like facebook… f*** you S-E. That is where even I draw the line.
In summary, I'm fine if they do have a generic multi-player mode or not, just do not tamper with the single player experience.

Good to know the campaign will have had all their attention. There are games with great multiplayer and great single player (see: TLOU), but when they fully commit to one or the other you know that what you play is their best shot.
Infamous had never been about multiplayer. So I'm glad out doesn't have it. I would've been some what disappointed if it did. As long add it has UGC I'm completely fine
Not everything need MP. I can tell you I never play MP part of the game. I finished The Last of Us 6 times and I haven't touch MP, not once.
Don't care, I'm more annoyed that for some reason some people expected it to.
Not even a little bothered by it. I almost never even try out multiplayer modes in single player games. I hear The Last of Us' multiplayer is great, for example, but I just don't care. When I play Last of Us again, it'll be to enjoy that stellar single player campaign again. Leave multiplayer to the multiplayer games.
Im actually glad they chose not to have multiplayer for the reasons you stated. We know that they put 100% of their work towards the SP campaign. And I'll actually have a chance to get the platinum.
OH!!!! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS NEWS!!! I am so sick of MP this and MP that. More developers need to do this and quit giving us watered down SP experiences that suffer due to all resources being put towards online. Good for them.
The majority of games that have SP & MP aspects the SP AND MP suffer for it. Usually it's the SP that get's the shorter end of the stick… If I want to play a MP game I'll flipping play a MMO or fighting game or sports game or racing game, but usually I want to play a well put together SP game and enjoy it.
I'm actually HAPPY infamous Second Son isn't going to have any MP, makes me even more interested in the game and can hardly wait for it to come out.
On the contrary, I would have been disappointed if they did include it. inFamous is a single player game, there's no need for a multiplayer mode. God of War Ascension is a perfect example. It's stale when compared to the rest of the series, and it just so happen to be the first and only God of War (so far) that included a multiplayer mode. The only game that I really liked the multiplayer mode for in a more single player oriented game was Birth by Sleep, so stoked for the HD version!!
I think what's so good about the Mirage Arena for Birth by Sleep was that it was optionally online, as in being able to play it by yourself or have a friend jump in and play. Either way, the feature is still accessible and the rest of the game isn't impacted negatively.
Late to post as always but here's my 2 cents. Multiplayer shouldn't be re requirement. If you know Infamous, you know this. And as many have noted, if the core game is sacrificed for MP then it's not worth doing.
However, in this day and age people find it hard to buy new games if they feel they wont get their time out of them and that is kind of interesting when you think about it. TIME has (for some people) usurped quality as one of the most important factors in buying games. People want to stretch their dollars.
On that note, I will say that Infamous could benefit from going the way of say, Bioshock Infinite and adding multiplayer. Infamous just seems like a great base for some interesting mp game modes whether its a form of co op, racing, agents vs conduit etc.
