When Call of Duty: Ghosts was initially announced, we thought we'd be getting an entirely new engine. It's one of the reasons we actually felt a little excited.
However, it should probably be noted that the engine isn't…well, it isn't technically brand new. Activision may have said Infinity Ward was building a new engine, and that Ghosts would be powered by a "next-gen CoD engine," but now we have an interesting/disappointing clarification from IW animation lead Zach Volker.
In speaking to the Official PlayStation Magazine (as cited by CVG ), Volker said it's not an all-new engine, but an upgraded version of the same engine. Yeah, that's kind of unfortunate.
" When we're talking about a new engine we're talking about upgrading significant systems within in that engine. We're not talking about throwing it all away and saying we're starting from the ground up ."
Oh, God forbid. He added that it's "impossible to develop a new engine from the ground up in a two-year cycle." That much is probably true and only lends further credence to visionaries like David Cage, who really hate constant installments in franchises. Obviously, there's no chance Activision wants to take a year off; they'd be passing up a guaranteed $1 billion, and for no real reason. Why? Just to make the game better? What for? People are gonna buy it, anyway.
Yay.
