Most Played Game In 2011: The Honor Goes To Skyrim

In the end, it came down to longer play sessions versus incomparable sales numbers.

Game-tracking social service website Raptr has released its "most played game" awards today, and Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim just managed to squeak past Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to earn the illustrious top honors.

Basically, Raptr uses a formula by tracking play time data to determine the winners, but bear in mind that they're only counting registered Xbox 360 and PC users. PlayStation 3 and Wii titles weren't included "due to data capturing restrictions," so bear that in mind when examining these results.

In total first-month playtime, MW3 had a 9% edge on Skyrim , but the epic RPG requires a ton of time and caught up; the average playtime per person came to around 23 hours. Players also averaged nearly three hours per session, while MW3 came in at just over two hours. Other winners include L.A. Noire for Most Played New IP, FIFA 12 for Most Played Sports Game, and Batman: Arkham City for Most Played Open-World Game.

But how do you think the results would've changed had they included PS3 and Wii users? What games would've come out on top? Would it have still been MW3 and Skyrim ? …yeah, probably.
