PS4 Availability At Launch Will Be Key

Historically, a new PlayStation has been absolutely impossible to get on launch day if you didn't pre-order it. Hell, it was hard to get one within several months of initial release.

Really, I think that's one of the primary factors many people overlook when appraising previous hardware launches. People can point to unimpressive software lineups right out of the gate (although those arguments don't have quite as much merit as some believe). The bottom line is that if no store in existence has the damn thing to sell, then what difference does it make? No stock, excitement starts to dwindle fast.

Recent reports for the PlayStation 4 are encouraging, though- it seems Sony is primed and ready to flood the market with lots of systems. Some reports claim we could see as many as 10-15 million units around the world in 2013 alone, which is pretty damn good. Factor in what Sony is claiming to be their "best launch lineup of games ever," and you're looking at a product that could fly off shelves. Above all else, though, stores need the PS4 to sell, regardless of consumer interest. Love it all you want; if it isn't there, it can't be sold. You have to tempt the consumer sometimes, you know?

With more straightforward architecture and cheaper components, there's really no reason why the PS4 can't be manufactured with relative ease. And while it was always kinda fun to feel somewhat privileged on launch day, knowing you were one of a very small number of gamers who brought home the new system…well, it's just not good from a business standpoint. Oh, and it should also eliminate other nasty occurrences, such as the news of muggings and thefts that occurred at the launch of the PS3 (and PS2). We can really do without those, too.

I think. I really intend to be a pre-order stand in like at 12am person for this one. So it doesn't bother me if they run out, as long as it's right after me.

I'm on the fence. I don't want to buy an more big items this year after being hit with Hurricane Sandy last year and thousands of $$$ in damage. Plus my PS3 backlog. On the other hand I just looked at my Best Buy Reward Zone points and they do expire…

How many video game units does a man really need?

As many as it takes to get your mind off the hurricane damage bills.

I probably won't grab one right away, it may be Sony but with these cheaper components I think I'll let you guys beta test the tech for me.

Gamestop would take pre-orders on pretty much everything. You can even pre-order the sequel to COD:Ghosts, COD:Wraiths if it means grabbing even more money from people.

Amazon is already taking pre-orders in Europe. 600 euro. Of course, the price doesn't mean anything. It's just their guess.

All retailers in Australia are taking pre-orders. Pretty much as soon as they were announced. And yeah, the consoles, all games, and accessories all have "guestimate" prices. They priced the consoles at $900 AUD lol. Which for reference, is about the same as what the PS3 launched at.

I camped out in front of best buy for two very cold nights to get my PS3. It was the best decision I've ever made. I got me a 60 gig console that works to this very day.

This time I will reserve the PS4, but it will be mine on launch day. I'm pumped.

The only potential bottleneck in the supply chain I see might be having enough GDDR5 chips to populate the PS4 motherboards.

I never understood this mindset for this type of item. I mean, sure if Burger King is Busy you can go to Arby's and it's no big deal.

But when you're dropping $300-500 on a new system that will determine your gaming experience for the next decade, do you really go to the rival because the store is temporarily out of stock?

Even grandma who knows nothing about gaming knows at that price tag if little's Timmy Christmas list says PS4, she better get a PS4 not that green box.

Sony will try to keep the PS4 price as high as possible. Therefore there will be a lack of PS4's in the beginning, as it was with the ps3.

They will use the sales of ps3's and ps3 games to make up for any loses until the ps4 starts selling less, then they will drop the price of the ps4 for more sales.

End of line.

Like I said before in another article, I heard a report that Sony was going to have 16 million PS4s manufactured by the end of August, and possibly a few million more than that ready to go by launch day.

If this report is true, then I think that there will be more than enough to go around at launch.
