Holmes and Watson, Frodo and Sam, Han Solo and Chewbacca; the world of entertainment is full of fantastic duos.

Every now and then game developers have each other's backs too. Square-Enix and Tri-Ace brought us a pretty solid Star Ocean this generation. Platinum Games picked up and dusted off Metal Gear Rising for Kojima Productions and delivered a great action title. I couldn't help but notice the marked improvement in the storytelling of inFamous 2 after Sucker Punch got an assist from Naughty Dog. So why don't we see more developers teaming up for epic productions?

Each developer tends to be big enough to handle one game at a time, maybe two at the most, and they have big obligations to publishers along with complicated contracts. So maybe having a pipe dream is just for fun. Most of the time we hear about a game and which developer will be attached to the project and then we proceed to make exciting assumptions based on what we know about the developers (if we know anything about them).

Sometimes though, it's more fun to think about what a dream team might be able to achieve. In some ways it seems that certain developers could just complement each other so well that it's a crime there are so many barriers to collaboration. That's why we'd like to hear about who your dynamic duo would be and what they would produce.

In the shooter universe maybe Call of Duty could really get a boost from a single title made by the collaboration of Infinity Ward and Treyarch. Or perhaps you'd like to see Insomniac and Guerrilla Games engineer the triumphant return of Resistance on PS4. (Actually I wouldn't mind GG teaching Crytek a thing or two about AI while merging awesome graphical capabilities.)

Where RPGs are concerned I know I'd love to see Level 5 hook up with Namco Tales Studio for a return to the Rogue Galaxy universe. Or perhaps Bethesda and Bioware could find a way to create an open world RPG with a strong overarching story.

Or maybe you're a racing junkie and want to mix the best of the Burnout and Need For Speed worlds.

Personally I think the creator of Dishonored , Arkane Studios, could achieve something completely amazing if they could somehow work with Bioshock 's Irrational Games. I also kind of like the idea of Insomniac coming back to Sony after the Fuse …situation… for a project with Naughty Dog that brings third person action to new heights.

The ultimate combo for me is literally impossible, it would be Squaresoft from about 1997 and the team at Konami who made Suikoden V in 2006. It would be an unstoppable Frankenstein of Final Fantasy and Suikoden that would redefine turn-based combat and make everyone cry about every 15 hours 🙂

Who do you think would make the ultimate dynamic developing duo? What might they make?

Related Game(s): inFamous 2, Final Fantasy, Suikoden V, Call of Duty, Resistance, Dishonored, Bioshock
