PlayStation executive, Shuhei Yoshida, is leaving Sony after over 30 years helping bring some of the biggest PlayStation exclusives to life as once-president of SIE Worldwide Studios. His departure date is January 15, 2025.
His departure was announced during a special episode of the PlayStation Podcast, with a subsequent interview exploring his time at the Japanese giant. He also revealed that he considered moving on since his 30-year mark.
“I’ve been with PlayStation from the beginning, and this is my 31st year with PlayStation. And when I hit 30 years, I was thinking, hmm, it may be about time for me to move on. You know, the company’s been doing great. I love PS5, I love the games that are coming out on this platform. And we have new generations of management who I respect and admire. And I’m so excited for the future of PlayStation. So you know, PlayStation is in really good hands. I thought, okay, this is my time.”
Now, it’s worth noting that Yoshida is not retiring, rather he’s just looking for a change of pace. Responding a comment on Twitter about the news, he assured them that he’s still staying in the industry.
It’s unclear what his future holds; he could go the route of starting his own game development studio, start being a consultation-for-hire, likely with an indie focus, or something entirely different from his previous roles. What we do know, though, is he’s still in the industry as a whole.
