Fans who grew up in the era of Guitar Hero and DJ Hero may remember the name RedOctane, largely for the classic guitar controllers. Aside from now being under publisher Embracer Group, RedOctane is making a 2025 comeback, as RedOctane Games.
RedOctane Games has been formed as of Wednesday August 6, as reported by Game Informer. The original RedOctane was founded by Charles and Kai Huang, and contributed to the history of Music/Rhythm games with Harmonix when the initial installment(s) of the Guitar Hero franchise debuted with the iconic plastic guitar controllers with color-coded strum buttons. This was 20 years ago during the mid 2000s, which saw the rise of GH‘s rival EA-published franchise Rock Band in following years.
GH publisher Activision shuttered RedOctane and the GH franchise in 2010 following the release of that year’s GH title Warriors of Rock. Despite the franchise being rebooted five years later (now nearly 10 years ago) with Guitar Hero Live, Music/Rhythm games haven’t made a full return to the genre’s heyday of a decade prior.
But that might be slowly changing, as RedOctane Games aims to release an original music/rhythm game sometime in the coming years (via PC Gamer). Additionally, the studio’s revival has been announced in a launch trailer on YouTube:
We’re not just making games, we’re creating connected rhythm experiences that unite cutting-edge controllers, genre-defining titles, and a thriving community, all moving to the same beat. From day one, this is a journey we take together. The next great rhythm game is in the works.
What do you think? Could the Music/Rhythm genre make a return to form, starting with RedOctane Games’s upcoming new title? Let us know below!
