A Game To Make Me Love My Vita Again: Wipeout 2048 Sequel

A few days ago, Sony said a Vita successor is "unlikely."

Admittedly, I haven't picked up my Vita in a while.

As I don't travel much and I have very little interest in looking at a screen when I'm out and about, the Vita is more like an optional gaming platform at home. As weird as it sounds, that's what portable gaming has always been like for me, dating back to the original GameBoy.

At any rate, if there's one new title that would make me dust off the Vita, it would have to be a new Wipeout . Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida gave us all hope with his "never say never" quote concerning a new entry in the esteemed series. And that got me thinking; it reminded me of when I first saw Wipeout 2048 on Sony's slick new portable. It was the first game I reviewed for Vita and there was a damn good reason.

Perhaps even more so than the great Uncharted: Golden Abyss , I felt Wipeout 2048 best highlighted the Vita's raw power and potential. It was just so unbelievably impressive in the portable space; so fast, fluid and highly enjoyable, that it was very difficult to put down. Not only that, but it's the perfect portable production because you don't need to invest a huge amount of time to have fun. And I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one who feels the way. So, if Sony wanted to generate a bit of rejuvenated interest in the flagging Vita, I would strongly recommend a new Wipeout .

Gimme!

Sony: Wipeout 2048 Is A “Huge Game”

I've always loved Wipeout . That silky smooth gameplay and all those events and races…just so pretty and engrossing.

And that's why Wipeout 2048 for the PlayStation Vita is easily one of my most anticipated titles for Sony's new portable. You should probably be excited, too, because it's a bad idea to assume that a handheld iteration is somehow smaller than past console installments.

According to what Sony Studio Liverpool senior designer Mike Humphrey told Vita Gamr , Wipeout 2048 is gonna be downright massive.

"Basically when you buy WipEout 2048 — it’s a huge game, it’s actually the biggest WipEout we’ve ever made, and there’s a very in-depth online campaign for WipEout 2048 — what you also get is all the WipEout HD content to play online against PS3 players.

Did you know that about the Wipeout HD content? That's pretty freakin' cool. The best part is that the highly advanced Vita is just the right platform for such a game; it has the specs to handle the required frame rate (fans of the series absolutely won't compromise), and to be able to play with PS3 players is fantastic. Next to Uncharted: Golden Abyss , Wipeout 2048 could be the very best Vita experience in February.
