The Watch Dogs 2 Hype Train Might Be Starting Any Minute

The original had its fair share of detractors.

Some said it didn't live up to the hype, then there was that blowup about how the massively circulated trailers didn't match the final product. And when the game released, there were a myriad of login issues and other problems .

Even so, we maintain that Watch Dogs was a pretty great game and one worthy of a sequel. In fact, the first title laid down one of the most solid and possibility-laden foundations of any new IP we'd seen in a long time. The premise could be taken in a hundred different directions and while the original's narrative was a trifle disappointing, there's all kinds of room to grow.

Now, we're hearing that Assassin's Creed might skip 2016 and to fill the holiday void, Ubisoft will give us Watch Dogs 2 . If true, this means you can expect the hype train to start rolling out of the station any day now. This follow-up effort might just be the most anticipated sequel of 2016 and indeed, one of the most anticipated sequels of the entire generation. We have no idea if they'll bring back protagonist Aiden Pearce or if we'll be in the same environment but either way, we love the idea of building on that aforementioned foundation.

We also wonder if the developers will use this opportunity to go time-hopping as they do in AC. Of course, considering the theme, we can't really go back in time but might we rocket farther ahead into the future…? No matter what, color us intrigued right now.

Ubisoft Confirms: Watch Dogs At 900p On PS4, 792p On Xbox One

At least now we can finally put this issue to rest.

The performance of Watch Dogs on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox one has been a much-debated topic during recent weeks. Yesterday, we saw Sony quietly remove the claim of "1080p/60FPS" from the official banner for the PS4 version.

So, what's the deal? Creative director Jonathan Morin has cleared everything up in a new post at the Ubisoft blog : The PS4 version of the game will run at 900p while the Xbox One iteration will only manage 792p. Both versions, however, will run at 30 frames per second. This being said, Morin stressed that these are "just numbers:"

"Resolution is a number, just like framerate is a number. All those numbers are valid aspects of making games. But you make choices about the experience you want to deliver. In our case, dynamism is everything. Exploration and expression are everything. You want to have a steady framerate, but you want to have dynamism at the core of the experience. The same goes with resolution."

Morin further explained how resolution and frame rate benchmarks change depending on what type of game you're making. Corridor shooters, for example, can look amazing with "all the effects on," but you can't get away with that in a big, vibrant, open-world setting. And that makes sense.

One thing remains true, though: It's another multiplatform title that performs just a little better on Sony's machine.

Watch Dogs May Not Manage 1080p/60 FPS On PlayStation 4

Well, which is it?

We've heard various reports that the PlayStation 4 version of Watch Dogs would be the best iteration available. Other reports have been more specific, saying that the PS4 offering will run in 1080p at 60 frames per second.

In fact, a few days ago, Sony published a banner on the game's official website , specifically mentioning those 1080p/60FPS benchmarks. However, as noted by DualShockers , Sony has quietly removed the exact specs and replaced them with the simple claim that the PS4 version will have the "best graphics."

Oh, all this talk about resolution and frames per second. Let's not get too nitpicky.

Insider: PS4 Owners Will Get The Best Watch Dogs Experience

This isn't the first time we've heard such a claim.

After rumors that Watch Dogs on the PlayStation 4 would run at a higher native resolution than it's Xbox One counterpart, industry insider Tidux has tried to make it plain: Play the PS4 version.

According to the tipster's Twitter page :

"If you are getting WD on #PS4 you get the best console experience."

He added the following- "that your gaming experience is better on #PS4 is here to stay." You could interpret that any number of ways, but it's all positive for PS4 owners. That's if you believe his so-called inside information, by the way. Some of these guys are often right but then again, sometimes they're dead flat wrong.

Still, let's not forget that last year's Assassin's Creed: Black Flag ran better on PS4, too, and that was a Ubisoft game, so…

Watch Dogs Devs: PS4’s Power Gave Us “A Chance To Dream”

New, more powerful hardware gives developers everywhere a chance to expand their horizons (literally and figuratively).

Watch Dogs animation director Colin Graham praised Sony's PlayStation 4 for offering a fantastic memory budget, which ultimately gave the development team a "chance to dream." That's what he said during a recent interview over at the PlayStation Blog :

"PS4 has really given us the platform to build a new type of game. It gave us a chance to dream. From an animation point of view, we're always running out of memory, especially when you start developing towards the end of a console generation, so PS4 allowed things like reduced animation compression and more variety in civilians."

Graham added that it's "a bit like working with an unlimited budget" because they never can fill the memory budget of the system. "It's a really nice piece of hardware," he concluded. Lead gameplay designer Danny Belanger also had some kind words for Sony's new game machine, saying the extra power "brings us a step forward."

After being delayed, the long-anticipated Watch Dogs is due out on May 27 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. If you opt to purchase either the PS3 or PS4 version, you'll grab some exclusive content !
