PlayStation Portal Dominates UK’s Peripheral Market

It’s no secret that the PlayStation Portal is a smash hit peripheral for the PlayStation 5, but as we march nearly a year since its debut, just like it saw success in the US, over across the pond, the Portal is the best-selling accessory in gaming. The data is marked by revenue, so it might be slightly skewed due to its lofty price, but other peripherals like the DualSense Edge are still underperforming it.

As noted by GamesIndustry.biz, which shared GfK data, the peripheral has been the country’s number one or number two pick since its debut back in November, barring January when Sony realized the demand was too much for what it planned for at the time, giving rise to stock issues.

There is a place for the hardware, but we certainly hope this will signal that PlayStation gamers want more portability when it comes to Sony’s strong line of games, and perhaps they will listen and produce a new handheld. It’s feeling more and more like a pipedream, but we know we’re not alone.

Sony Pulls PS Now Gift Cards From UK Retailers

PS Now

UK retailers are no longer selling PlayStation Now gift cards as Sony continues to shift to the more broad “cash denomination” gift cards they favor, which can be redeemed for Sony’s service. PS Now is Sony’s cloud gaming streaming service, which has been around since early 2014, allowing fans to stream some classic PlayStation titles from back in the day.

According to a spokesperson speaking to VentureBeat, this UK-exclusive — for now — move is thanks to the “cash denomination” thing.

“Globally, we are moving from PlayStation Now gift cards to focus on our current cash denomination PlayStation gift cards, which can be redeemed for PlayStation Now.”

This move could be a sign of validity to Bloomberg‘s Spartacus rumor, but as it stands, this could be a mere coincidence that Sony is shying away from PS Now gift cards and going a more broad route as they’re currently facing these rumors.

PS5 Is The Clear Favorite According To New UK Survey

A recent survey conducted by Experience12 (via MCV/Develop), a UK-based marketing agency, paints the favorite next-gen console as the PS5. Among the three thousand surveyed, around 84 percent cited the PS5 as their most anticipated next-gen console with 37 percent many planning on getting it on launch day.

It’s important to note this data isn’t taking into consideration the recent Xbox Games Showcase as the survey was conducted from June 24 through July 2. This same survey noted the current favorite console remains the PS4 with a 59 percent favoritism. This percentage is quite significant with its closest competitor – Xbox – standing at around 16 percent.

We should bear in mind, this isn’t a definitive “shove it Xbox” win. It’s only one survey skewing drastically in PS5’s favor.

The Last of Us Part II Is The Biggest Boxed Release This Year In The UK

The Last of Us Part II

To absolutely no one’s surprise, The Last of Us Part II has skyrocketed in sales. Per a report released by Games Industry, it is the biggest boxed UK launch this year, even beating out Animal Crossing: New Horizons by 40 percent.

It’s even beaten Uncharted 4‘s 2016 opening week by just above one percent, leaving it a real close race. It may not be as close of a race, though, if it wasn’t for the digital copies not being tallied.

The chart itself hasn’t changed with no new entries aside from The Last of Us Part II.
