Sony Partially Loses Vita Trademark In EU

Vita

The European Union have partly revoked Sony’s trademark on the Vita, citing non-use.

Among game-related trademarks, Sony had trademarked its Vita to include it as a “data carrier carrying program” and “audio and/or image carriers (not of paper).” This was accepted, but Vieta Audio applied to have those revoked back in 2011, when the Vita launched, pointing out that the trademarks simply weren’t properly in use.

Sony tried to prove the claim wrong by providing their own evidence, but it wound up rejected by both the Cancellation Division and the Board of Appeal. The main argument was that while the PlayStation Vita could act in the now-revoked trademarks’ field, it simply wasn’t the focal point of its creation and that they played second fiddle to its core purpose — gaming.

Sony has not given the light of day to its mobile console, even trying to shutter its online store earlier this year, only to be faced with a wave of backlash. They then halted production of Vita games, effectively ending its lifecycle.

Sony Files “Heighten Your Senses” Trademark For DualSense

DualSense

Ahead of the reveal of the PS5’s design, we got a glimpse at the controller associated with it. Labeled the DualSense, it was a far cry from its DualShock counterpart with its two-tone colors and extra features. Now, it’s looking to have its own slogan.

Sony has filed a trademark for “Heighten Your Senses” affiliated to a game controller. No doubt the phrase is tied to the haptic feedback developers are praising Sony for. The trademark was filed on June 12. The PS5 is slated to launch this holiday season.

SEGA Could Be Prepping To Announce New IP

Humankind

A brand-new IP could be announced soon. SEGA has recently launched a teaser subdomain on their website. The subdomain is called “HMKD“. While, at first glance, it seems to be a string of somewhat random letters, with “Be the first to know” in the center, people point to their trademark of Humankind from late 2018.

Back in December, SEGA filed for a trademark for Humankind in Japan. This in and of itself indicated something was going to happen. Companies don’t trademark something for no reason. Nothing ever did get announced at the time, but it usually takes a while to get games done.

Fans are speculating this possible Humankind announcement will be in full swing during Gamescom 2019. Gamescom 2019 is starting August 20 and goes through to the 24 in Cologne, Germany.
