TMNT: The Last Ronin Game Revealed For PS5

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ The Last Ronin timeline is getting the game adaptation treatment for current-gen consoles. It’s sure to be a huge change from its previous, more cartoony TMNT: Shedder’s Revenge, which featured the classic beat-em-up formula.

This no doubt grittier-than-normal TMNT game was only just revealed during the recent THQ Nordic showcase, the same one that showed off an update to the 3D South Park game supposedly in the works. Nothing of substance — not even a snippet of gameplay spliced between cutscenes — was shared.

If we had to guess, it won’t be like its cartoony counterpart and may play closer to a linear story-based game with an emphasis on combat and maybe stealth elements. Due to its unabashedly dark plot, it will likely be T, but we wouldn’t be shocked if this got an M rating. So far, it’s in the earlier stages of development, so we expect it will be quite a while before German developer Black Forest Games has anything big to share.

God Of War Inspires Upcoming New TMNT Game

New TMNT Game

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are taking a sidestep to flesh out a more angsty game concept further. This new TMNT game is based on The Last Ronin, a dark and mature timeline where only one of the four turtles remains while the others perished by the Foot Clan. The sole remaining turtle then wielded all four weapons as his own.

During an interview with Polygon, SVP of Paramount Global’s games and emerging media division, Doug Rosen, discussed the title and how the game will primarily be single-character, which is different from the last games featuring the Ninja Turtles. He also touched on the fact the game drew some inspiration from Santa Monica Studio’s God of War and even made direct comparisons between the two.

While most of the game will be spent playing as this one turtle, this new TMNT game may feature flashbacks, which Rosen alludes to the possibility of other playable characters through there.

We still have a ways to wait, unfortunately, with the SVP saying they’re still “a few years off,” but nonetheless, this has the potential to be a treat for those looking for new TMNT content.

The Turtles May Soon Return To Games

TMNT – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for all those under the age of 25 – gets me all nostalgic. You, too, right?

And if Activision really is planning to produce another title, I might be interested…well, provided it's a good old-fashioned side-scrolling beat-'em-up like previous entries.

This possibility is based on a bunch of pictures showing Playmates Toys, as reported at GameSpot . Among those pictures is the marketing plans for this line of toys, which includes "cross promotions with key licensees, including [comic publisher] IDW and Activision." IDW revealed its plan to produce TMNT comics last year but Activision hasn't made a peep about a new video game. Maybe that announcement will come soon.

The Turtles have been involved in gaming since the NES days and although their titles have never been masterpieces, they've often been plenty entertaining. I distinctly remember one particular iteration on the Gameboy called Fall of the Foot Clan , and I played the hell out of it. So we can always use a new TMNT, I say. Leonardo FTW!
