Sony Bend Not Working On New Syphon Filter, Sadly

Sony Bend has been working on a PlayStation 4 game for several years now, and lots of fans were hoping it was the triumphant return of Syphon Filter .

But you might have to drop that notion.

According to DualShockers citing a Reddit user ("athey") who claims to be a former employee of the Sony Bend studio, it's not a Syphon Filter sequel. She worked there for 8 years and knows what they're working on now but she won't spill the beans. She did say, however:

"John Garvin got burned out on Syphon Filter. He wanted to make something different. People seem to like to ignore that Gabe Logan died at the end of Logan’s Shadow. Garvin literally killed off the main character so he wouldn’t have to make any more SF games. Plus, despite all the praise, they didn’t sell. Very low sales all around."

She added that the team pitched the idea of doing a new inFamous and Uncharted for PlayStation Vita, but those projects fell through. That's too bad but we'll definitely be interested in what Sony Bend is making for PS4 and if it isn't Syphon Filter , will it be similar…?

Guess we'll have to wait and see.

Don’t Sleep On A Next-Generation Syphon Filter Reboot

According to the rumor , Sony may unveil a Syphon Filter reboot at E3 this year.

Believe it or not, that could be one of the biggest announcements of the show.

This franchise made quite the stir back in the original PlayStation days and honestly, it would've made a much bigger stir had it not been for Metal Gear Solid . Yes, MGS was superior but then again, the two franchises were inherently different, too. And if Sony Bend really is cranking away on this reboot – supposedly dubbed "Kill Strain" – then you will hear some very happy fans whooping and hollering.

I know these fans; they're awfully loyal, and they'll tell anyone who's willing to listen that the first few entries in the Syphon Filter franchise were absolutely stellar. The original title still holds an average 90 Metascore, for instance, and the PSP iterations were excellent. Furthermore, this is precisely the kind of game that could really benefit from the added power of the PlayStation 4. Does anyone else remember a game called Winback for the PS2? It launched early in that system's lifespan but it made me think, "if we just had more power…"

That's what I always thought whenever I played a Syphon Filter , even though I was more than satisfied with what Sony produced. A reboot would be fantastic, although I may have some reservations about Sony Bend. They have to join the big boys and that's always a tall order.

Rumor: Syphon Filter 4 Set For Winter 2012 Launch?

The naysayers called it the poor man's Metal Gear Solid but in truth, Syphon Filter was once a great, entertaining series.

Many fans have been waiting for an installment on the PlayStation 3, too, so if this information is accurate, there will be quite a few happy gamers out there. Are we ready for Syphon Filter 4 ?

According to SilleGamer citing the August 2011 edition of the Official PlayStation Magazine Italy, we will indeed receive the fourth entry exclusively on the PlayStation 3 in Winter 2012. This comes after evidence of a new title popped up on the official US PlayStation website; evidence that included details and an early logo, and promptly disappeared. Supposedly, Syphon Filter 4 is a sequel to Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow for the PSP and it's in development at SCE London Studio. Oh, and we're looking at what should be a "visually advanced engine." Yeah, well, we can always use that.

Hopefully, Sony will make the announcement some time soon. Of course, it's still just a rumor but we fully expect an unveiling. Sometimes, Syphon Filter gets a bad rap and while there were a few lackluster installments, the first titles were some of the best available on the original PlayStation. Let's not forget that.
