Yeah, I know. When you put "story" and "fighting game" in the same sentence, people laugh.
And despite the promise, you probably rolled your eyes a little when you learned about the "free, expanded story mode" that will be coming to Street Fighter V in June.
But wait. Don't be surprised if this storyline is surprisingly involving and entertaining. Producer Yoshinori Ono tells VentureBeat that this full narrative experience is in response to fans wishing for a better narrative. So, Ono says they "talked about this in earnest on the R&D side" and they ended up putting a ton of effort into the concept. He said the story was designed to bridge the gap between SFIV and SFIII and it wasn't an easy task…in fact, Ono claims it was "probably a bit more difficult than 'Star Wars.'" He added:
"There have been people who've been disappointed with the way our story content has been handled in the past. This time we can say very firmly that no one will be disappointed with this level of story.
When they see this they'll realize, 'Wow, Street Fighter is a real contender. This is an amazing brand with an amazing story.'"
Will we get a shockingly good narrative in Street Fighter V ? Cross your fingers! The game is scheduled to launch on February 16 for PlayStation 4 and PC, and don't forget to check out the newly released game mode trailer .
