Sony Confirms New State Of Play This Week

Sony has confirmed the rumored State of Play, with it slated for later this week. The show will be the first PlayStation-first event this year and it sounds like it’ll be a pretty beefy one.

On the PlayStation Blog, PlayStation Studios head Herman Hulst reveals that the event will kick off on January 31 at 2 PM PT/5 PM EST. It will include extended looks at notable upcoming first-party titles like Rise of Ronin and Stellar Blade, leading to over 15 games as part of this 40-minute presentation.

Supposedly, this will also showcase more about Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Death Stranding 2, as rumored by both Nick Baker and Rand al Thor. More potentials include a new Metro game, Sonic Generations Remastered, Silent Hill 2, and Judas. With a potentially stacked event, this State of Play is poised to have quite a few eyes on it.

Luckily, we don’t have much time to wait, as it hits the airwaves on Wednesday.

What do you think? What games are you hoping to see? Let us know below!

Sonic Generations Includes Original Sonic The Hedgehog

Although he has fallen on hard times (okay, the hard times have endured for a while, but whatever), Sonic remains a video game icon.

And if you'd like to continue to support the blue streak, you'll want to grab Sonic Generations , which is set to arrive on November 1. If you do, you'll get a nice little bonus, provided you're willing to work for it.

According to information taken from a Sonic Generations panel during Paris Games week, Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka confirmed that the original Sonic the Hedgehog will be available as an unlockable award . They also presented attendees with the game's level hub, which contains doors and levels filled with Sonic's buddies.

Generations includes both 2D and 3D gaming with your favorite supersonic mascot, and we're really hoping this package will be a worthwhile purchase. And although Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception comes out on the same day, we all need a little nostalgic healing every now and then. And even if the 3D sucks again, we'll at least be able to play Sonic the way it was meant to be played. Yeah, you heard me.

Sonic Generations Speeding To PS3, 360 On November 1

The fleet-footed hero has fallen on hard times recently. …okay, when we say "recently," we're talking about a looooong span of time.

Some say that in order for Sonic to reclaim his former glory, he simply has to return to his roots. And that's exactly what we'll get with Sonic Generations , the new entry from Sega that will allow fans to sample both classic 2D and modern-day 3D environments.

Sega has revealed a release date for North America and Europe; November 1 for the former and November 4 for the latter. The 3DS version still holds a vague "late 2011" date but the console fans don't care, do they? We keep rooting for the blue streak to clamber back to the top of the gaming mountain; to re-solidify his place amongst the highest echelon of gaming icons. Maybe Sonic Generations is just what we need to remind us that yes, at one point in time, Sonic ruled .

Sample The Sonic Generations Demo This Week

If one has the option to play it in 2D or 3D, what evil influence would entice you to play it in 3D?

Well, maybe it'll be great in both perspectives. Let's not be too negative. Either way, you'll be able to check it out this week:

A reader tells us Sega has a Sonic Generations demo ready, and it hits both the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live service this week. The demo will come with the classic version of Green Hill Zone (yay!), although we're not entirely sure if we'll be able to sample it in both 2D and 3D. See, when they say "classic," they're referring to 2D; when they say "modern" for Generations , that means the 3D re-imagining of classic levels. We'll be happy with whatever we get, though, because Sonic deserves to have a happy 20th anniversary; he shouldn't have to be reminded about all those 3D failures that sullied his good name.

No, just give us Sonic the way he used to be. You know, there was a time kiddies, when Sonic used to be like Call of Duty today. …okay, maybe more like Battlefield , as Mario was obviously CoD.

Choose “Classic” or “Modern” Style In Sonic Generations

What was initially revealed on Sega's Facebook page has now been officially announced.

Today, Sega America, Inc. and Sega Europe Ltd. have released details for Sonic Generations , the new title in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

In celebration of the blue streak's 20th anniversary, this will be the "definitive gaming experience for Sonic fans old and new." Sonic the Hedgehog will be playable as both the classic 1991 character and the modern day hero. What this means is that Generations is placed across three different eras over the span of those 20 years: recognizable levels are rebuilt in HD and are "playable in both classic side-scrolling 2D, as well as modern 3D style."

Sonic will even have trademark abilities from the different eras; that includes the Spin Dash and Spin Attack from the old days and the Homing Attack and Sonic Boost from more recent times. Said David Corless, Sonic Global Brand Director:

"Sonic Generations will certainly be a fitting celebration for Sonic’s 20th Anniversary. By having the classic 1991 Sonic that many fans know and love team up with his modern day incarnation, we are bringing back the nostalgia of the early days of Sonic and combining it with the innovation and stunning HD technology of the modern gaming era. Sonic Generations will bring to life the last twenty years of Sonic’s universe in a truly unique and imaginative way."

Well, what do you think? Does Sega have a winner this time? …maybe I'll just play the entire game in the classic format. Sonic Generations should be ready to go for the holiday season this year.
