Silent Hill: Downpour Details Begin To Rain Down

Next month's Game Informer will feature a ton of big games, including the new Silent Hill .

And based on recent scans taken from the magazine, Hell Descent has compiled a list of baseline details for all the survival/horror aficionados. Remember, this is in development at newcomer Vatra studios but while they want to implement their own style, they also want to stick to the classic formula. It seems player choice/freedom will be prominent, as "obvious and subtle gameplay choices affect the story," and as you might've guessed from the title – Silent Hill: Downpour – water plays an integral role in the adventure. Here are a few more elements taken from the scans:

We're excited to see how this one turns out, primarily because we're long overdue for a top-quality Silent Hill console iteration. We're also hoping to hear about a release date, and let's not forget that Dead Space has sort of given the genre a big kick in the ass this generation. Resident Evil isn't the only competition out there, anymore…

February Game Informer: Skyrim Leads, Silent Hill Unveiled

Next month's Game Informer ought to be well worth a read; just check out the scheduled content.

First and foremost is the title on the cover: the recently announced The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , in development at Bethesda and guaranteed to appeal to hardcore role-playing fans everywhere. Evidently, the print version of the magazine cover will feature a "special ultraviolet coating that accentuates the symbol in the center, giving a striking, three-dimensional texture to the image." The 14-page feature will also boast 20 new screenshots and a ton of info on the game's story and gameplay, so brace yourself for an RPG explosion! But there's more: GI lists their top 50 games of 2010, gives us a new blowout on Mortal Kombat , their Dead Space 2 review, and our personal favorite, the "frightening look at the newest Silent Hill." We've been hearing about this for quite some time, but everything has been speculation; we have little in the way of confirmed details. And oh yes, we've been waiting on a new Silent Hill for a loooong time.

Well, just to clarify, we've been waiting on a SH installment that wasn't a portable or downloadable title. The PS3 could lend the freaky franchise a whole lot of intense, chilling atmosphere…

New Silent Hill Will Use Silent Hill 2 As Primary Inspiration

Silent Hill: Homecoming was okay, but horror fans really just want the next big production to arrive.

That is what is currently known as "Silent Hill 8." And thanks to a translation posted at Hell Descent , we have a new update: Czech gaming site Doupe spoke with the Lead Designer of the new SH installment, Mark Berka, and first off, he explains how they'll be "moving away from the more action-oriented feel of Silent Hill: Homecoming ." In fact, they're trying for something more similar to Silent Hill 2 as the latter survival/horror classic on the PS2 will be a "primary influence in terms of atmosphere." Oh, and if you're worried about the team taking any inspiration from the movie – which went over well with some, but not with others – Berka says this won't happen. We also like to hear they're going to place a big emphasis on the psychological horror aspects of the franchise; after all, this is the reason the games are so damn freaky. It's not about blood and gore and it certainly isn't about action; it's about the sensation . Ask Hitchock.

Silent Hill 8 will follow the story of escaped convict Murphy Pendleton's journey into the haunted village. Berka says a convict is a good pick as a main character because he has "so much background and depth." We can't wait to hear more!

Silent Hill Movie Stalls, Now A “Wait And See” Situation

First, the "Uncharted" movie breaks down after losing its intended director and now, due to the writer's legal problems, the new "Silent Hill" movie has hit a big snag.

The first film based on the critically acclaimed horror series released back in 2006 and it did well enough to warrant a sequel. Unfortunately, that sequel has been delayed several times and now, according to Industry Gamers citing producer Don Carmody, the project has officially "stalled." One of the big problems involves the movie's screenwriter, Roger Avary, who was convicted of vehicular manslaughter and sentenced to a work furlough program and prison. …everything's a little up in the air after all that. As Carmody told Fangoria :

"The original plan was Roger writing and polishing the screenplay, and when he had finished his thing, we’d begin full-blown production. I’m not sure what’s going on with that. We know we want to make Silent Hill 2 and have a basic outline for it. We’ll have to see."

At first, things were going okay. The work furlough program Avary participated in last year allowed him to direct during the day and stay in a "prison-like facility at night." But then, it seems he got hooked on Twitter and prison officials found he was tweeting about life in jail, which is a violation of work release rules. So, back he went to full-time prison. Yeah, it's a mess. Who knows what's going to happen now?
