Silent Hill: The Short Message Breaks Another Milestone

The PlayStation 5 exclusive free-to-play horror experience, Silent Hill: The Short Message, has surpassed three million downloads. Previously, bit breached 2.5 million back in May.

Developed by Hexadrive in Unreal Engine 5, Silent Hill: The Short Message puts you in the shoes of Anita, who’s told she can’t leave the rundown apartment complex she’s trapped in until she finds the ominously labeled “it.” Unfortunately, you’re not alone, roaming the building is Sakura Head, a humanoid entity that has cherry blossoms all across its head.

On launch, it faced mixed reviews, but we suspect many people who played it were just happy to get another Silent Hill game after such a long dry spell. The last proper game was the infamously delisted P.T. back in 2014.

The future is at least looking a little brighter for the future of the IP, with Bloober Team working on a Silent Hill 2 remake slated for later this year, as well NeoBards Entertainment partnering with Konami on Silent Hill F and No Code’s Silent Hill spin-off, Silent Hill: Townfall.

New Silent Hill 2 Remake Trailer Drops, Release Date Revealed

We’ve been waiting with bated breath for more info about the release of Silent Hill 2 Remake and we’ve gotten a lot more than expected with the latest State of Play. We knew the game was in the final stages of development, but that doesn’t make the showcase of the game any less satisfying.

Nearing the end of the event, fans got a glimpse into the remake with a mishmash of cinematics and gameplay. It also gave us a look at some of the monsters we can expect to encounter during our visit in Silent Hill. We also finally got a release date — October 8, 2024. A fitting month, to say the least.

Revealed in 2022, Bloober Team — with the blessing of Konami — has been hard at work remaking the game with modern graphics and seamless gameplay without loading screens. While many are undoubtedly excited to see what Bloober has in store, some are a little worried it could go wrong. Silent Hill series writer Sam Barlow called the remake a “poison chalice.”

Konami Wants Fans To Name Latest Silent Hill Creature… Kinda

After two decades, concept artist Masahiro Ito inked a brand-new design for Silent Hill: The Short Message, now it needs a name. While oftentimes, said name is chosen ahead of time to avoid confusion, it seems Konami wants to leave it in the hands of fans.

On Twitter, the Japanese developer put up a poll asking fans to select one of four selected names for the creature. The winner of the poll would — evidently — become the official name. The creature appears in the free-to-play PS5 entry to the series, dubbed The Short Message.

It’s faced some critical reception, but regardless, it managed to find great success in as little as a week. That said, we’d expect nothing less than a ton of backlash reviving the Silent Hill franchise without its original creator.

Silent Hill 2 Remake In “Final Stages Of Development”

Silent Hill

Konami has revealed that Silent Hill 2 Remake has entered the “final stages of development.” Still word on when the game is releasing, though.

Speaking with Famitsu (via GamingBolt), series producer Motoi Okamoto expressed that it is in the final stages, but at this point, he isn’t able to share much. He drummed up the game’s visuals and said it’s “easy to play in today’s world.”

Of course, this is far from the first time we’ve received word that the game was nearing the end of development, but each time it just leads nowhere. Hopefully, this isn’t a similar case. Considering the recent development of most of the team exiting the remake’s team to work on its Skybound project, we can assume this holds a twinge more weight.

“We are in the final stages of development. Unfortunately, there is very little I can tell you at this point. As for the game, you can think of it as the Silent Hill 2 you envisioned, but with beautiful visuals that make it easy to play in today’s world and give you the same memories you had in the past.”

Bloober Shifting Focus To Different Project

Silent Hill 2 Remake’s progress was going smoothly, and even though we’ve heard very little about it, Bloober Team seems to be shifting focuses. Granted, as the dev noted, updates would fall on publisher Konami.

On ResetEra, horror industry insider Dusk Golem alleges that the developer is moving to focus on its 2025 Skybound project and that the game is in the polishing phase, with a “skeleton crew” working on the polishing, bug fixes, and adjustments. It’s also likely being playtested.

Per Dusk Golem, it seems on track to release this year if Konami wants it to, which we don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t.

Konami Slashes Pyramid Head “Special Origin Story” Rumor

Silent hill 2 remake

Konami has slashed a rumor that alleges Silent Hill 2’s remake will feature a “special origin story” for the fan-favorite villain Pyramid Head. It’s hard to understand how this significant oversight made its way to the retailer’s site, but that’s beside the point.

Eurogamer reported on the rumor, taking note that it was only Best Buy who used the “special origin story” line. Come the following day, Konami reached out to stomp the rumor out, saying the retailer provided “incorrect information.” The line has since been wiped from the live page.

We don’t know when the Silent Hill 2 remake will drop, but considering the influx of retailers going live with pages, many speculate some news to come on this “poison chalice” during The Game Awards next month.
