Kojima Wants To Try His Hand At Silent Hill: Good Idea?

Hideo Kojima is a masterful video game designer. Metal Gear Solid is one of the greatest franchises of all time, period.

But what do you think about Kojima tackling the survival/horror genre? During a Twitch Q&A session yesterday, the MGS guru revealed that he'd like to work on a new Silent Hill entry one day. What do you have to say to that ?

When asked if there was a franchise he'd like to direct or reboot, Kojima named Konami's vaunted survival/horror series and added via translator:

"Hopefully sometime in the future I am able to work on this."

Best known for its creepy, atmospheric horror, Silent Hill is beloved among gamers who appreciate a good scare. The last installment, Silent Hill: Downpour , was something of a disappointment. If Kojima did work on the franchise, though, he said he'd have to prepare himself, as he'll have daily nightmares while developing the game. No surprise there.

Kojima also mentioned working on a mobile game but personally, I say his talents would be wasted on that medium. Stick to what you do best, and amplify your legend; don't diminish it with bite-size, dumbed-down entertainment for the masses. Personally, I think he'd make a fantastic Silent Hill entry…and here's a brainstorm: Invite Shinji Mikami ( Resident Evil creator) to take part. There's a dynamic duo!

A Canceled Game We Wanted To See: Silent Hill: The Box

Developer Silicon Knights hasn't been doing well lately, recently suffering a big ol' mass exodus . In the process, some unkind words were also said about boss Denis Dyack.

But we wish one of their canceled projects had actually made it to store shelves. According to an informative post in the NeoGAF forums , one of the titles that never got finished was a game called "The Box," which was essentially a Silent Hill iteration of some sort. SK pitched it to Sega and it was meant to be an "open-world survival horror" title for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Sega eventually dropped the idea and although THQ later revived it as "The Ritualyst," the project just never got off the ground. Details as to why are scarce.

It was canceled back in 2009, which is unfortunate. We could've used a really interesting take on the narrowing survival/horror genre. …that being said, if it had turned out to be as craptastic as X-Men: Destiny , maybe not seeing the end result is a blessing in disguise.

New Silent Hill Will Use Silent Hill 2 As Primary Inspiration

Silent Hill: Homecoming was okay, but horror fans really just want the next big production to arrive.

That is what is currently known as "Silent Hill 8." And thanks to a translation posted at Hell Descent , we have a new update: Czech gaming site Doupe spoke with the Lead Designer of the new SH installment, Mark Berka, and first off, he explains how they'll be "moving away from the more action-oriented feel of Silent Hill: Homecoming ." In fact, they're trying for something more similar to Silent Hill 2 as the latter survival/horror classic on the PS2 will be a "primary influence in terms of atmosphere." Oh, and if you're worried about the team taking any inspiration from the movie – which went over well with some, but not with others – Berka says this won't happen. We also like to hear they're going to place a big emphasis on the psychological horror aspects of the franchise; after all, this is the reason the games are so damn freaky. It's not about blood and gore and it certainly isn't about action; it's about the sensation . Ask Hitchock.

Silent Hill 8 will follow the story of escaped convict Murphy Pendleton's journey into the haunted village. Berka says a convict is a good pick as a main character because he has "so much background and depth." We can't wait to hear more!
