Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn Teaser Trailer, Coming In 2016

Of all the cult classics to get a modern-day reboot, I think this is the one about which I'm most surprised.

During last night's Game Awards 2015, developer Big Deez Productions gave us all our first peek at the upcoming Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn , and confirmed it will be coming our way next year.

Featuring the unparalleled martial arts skills of NBA great Shaquille O'Neal – whose abilities must've gotten better with age – the new Shaq-Fu will be quite the experience. Said Big Deez CEO Matt Karch:

"It was a thrill to join in a celebration of gaming’s biggest triumphs with the long-awaited return of one of its most towering figures. We can’t wait for fans to unleash the fury of the Big Diesel himself when this wildly stylized take on Shaq-Fu finally arrives."

Thing is, the original 16-bit fighter kinda…sucked. It was basically a joke. But the designers swear this new effort won't suck at all, as it'll boast "intense, combo-fueled, side-scrolling, beat-'em-up" fun for everyone." For more details, be sure to check out the game's Facebook page . And here's that teaser:

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn Is A Go

Sweeeet.

The Indiegogo campaign for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is over, and the endeavor was successful : Developer Big Deez Productions needed $450,000 and they got $473,884 from 1,340 backers.

Big Deez issued a "sincere and heartfelt thank you" to everyone who contributed and now, with the game fully funded, they're going to enter full production. To gather feedback from gamers, they'll launch a platform where backers can contribute ideas and suggestions.
They'll also keep us updated on the game's progress and again, they won't screw it up:

"Our success is on your shoulders. You have made this happen for all of us and we're thrilled to have had your passion and support from start to finish. Our promise still stands: This time we won't Fu it up!"

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is now in the works for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. They didn't make the stretch goals for iOS/Android ($650,000) and the 3DS/Vita ($960,000). However, it's interesting to note that someone did pledge $35,000, which earned him or her a visit from Shaq himself; he'll DJ at a party at the winner's house.

I just gotta see how this turns out.

If Shaq Fu Earns $450,000, It’ll Come To Next-Gen Consoles

Yep, it's coming to consoles! …well, if it earns enough money.

As announced at the game's Indiegogo campaign page , if Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn hits the $450,000 plateau, it'll be released for all major consoles: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U.

Currently, they've raked in $176,896 with 24 days left, so that $450,000 stretch goal seems plausible. Prior to this announcement, the revitalized Shaq Fu project was only confirmed for PC, with a lofty $1.6 million stretch goal for PS4 and Xbox One versions. In development at Big Deez Productions, staffed by guys and gals with experience in top game franchises like Halo , Max Payne , Killzone , Battlefield , Street Fighter and others, Shaq Fu appears to be in good hands.

Yeah, we all remember that awful 1994 fighting game with the same name. It has since become one of those legendary pieces of video game trash, right up there with E.T. for the Atari and Superman 64 for the N64. But hey, if you donate $35,000, Mr. O'Neal himself will travel to your party and DJ for you and your buddies. How's that?

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn: We Have To Make This Happen

I just can't believe they're making another one.

Indiegogo, the world's largest crowd-funding platform, has announced that former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal has launched a new campaign for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn . A cult classic since its launch on the Sega Genesis back in 1994, Shaq Fu is one of the most notoriously awful fighters of all time. And Shaq knows it:

"I’ll admit it, Shaq Fu was a horrible game. I’m a huge fan of videogames and want to have my name associated with a Shaq Fu game that I’m proud of and would like to play. This is my second chance and it’s even better this time since I’m able to partner with the fans to make this happen."

To achieve his goal, Shaq has teamed up with Big Deez Productions, a studio comprised of industry veterans that have experience with franchises like Street Fighter , Halo , Duke Nukem , Madden NFL Football and Max Payne . Perhaps unsurprisingly, the game's soundtrack will feature modernized remixes of classic Shaqs songs from his collection of Platinum and Gold albums.

As for the game itself, it's described as a modern-day twist on the old-school beat-'em-up format. We'll play as Shaq, of course, but this time, we'll be able to learn hundreds of classic and unique moves, along with "strategic battle techniques and brutal finishing moves." We'll even get combo and character skill progression systems, and power-ups will be scattered throughout every level, just for extra fun. Even the locations will be destructible!

Now, here's what's needed for the project; they need a minimum of $450,000 to bring the game to PC. After that:

Wanna contribute? If you donate $15, you'll receive a digital copy of the game; handing over $25 gets you a copy of the game and every piece of DLC they end up releasing; $400 will net you an invitation to the game's launch party in either Los Angeles or New York City. Oh, but things get even nuttier from there: Donating $15,000 means you can play some b-ball with Shaq at his home, and forking over $25,000 earns you a two-hour dinner with Shaq!

As for why Shaq – who has a lot of money – just isn't funding this on his own, the idea is to gauge gamer interest in the project. Guess we'll have to see…!
