What PS4 Needs More: A Resistance Or Killzone Sequel?

I don't care what anyone says; both franchises have always been great and they were very important during the previous generation.

Resistance: Fall of Man was the only launch title that made the PlayStation 3 worthwhile and it kicked off a brand new franchise, which I will always believe never got enough love and respect from gamers.

Killzone may have began during the PS2 generation but let's face it: Things didn't really get rolling until Killzone 2 on the PS3. One of the first shooters I've ever played where I said, "damn, this actually feels different ," it was very refreshing and beautifully produced. I also don't hold with the idea that Resistance and Killzone went steeply downhill after the games in question; that's not true at all .

But anyway, if you had to pick, which would you rather have: A brand new Resistance or Killzone ? Which do you think would generate the most excitement for PlayStation 4? Which would sell the best? Which would have the best chance of pushing the genre forward again? Me, I'd be good with another Wolfenstein (last year's The New Order was just the ticket in a land dominated by multiplayer, IMO) but I'm probably in the minority.

What say you?

Online Support For Resistance Franchise Ends On April 8

Say goodbye to several of the most entertaining online experiences of the previous generation.

Sony is ending online support for the entire Resistance series on April 8. This means that within the next few days, you will no longer be able to enjoy online multiplayer fun with Resistance: Fall of Man , Resistance 2 , or Resistance 3 .

Insomniac said on Twitter that it wasn't their decision; Sony controls the servers:

"There are a large variety of reasons why they have to shut down. Sony makes that call though, not us. They maintain online."

As for whether or not online support for the Vita title, Resistance: Burning Skies , will end, the developer says they don't know. That one might stick around for a little longer. I just wish Insomniac would make another Resistance title because really, that was my favorite FPS franchise of the PS3 generation. Killzone 2 and Killzone 3 were great, but I just found the Resistance games to be…I don't know, more fun, I guess.

Also, don't forget that Resistance 2 was one of the very first console titles to offer 64-player action online. That was nuts .

Insomniac: We’ll Keep Experimenting With Ratchet & Clank

The Ratchet & Clank franchise has undergone multiple changes in this past generation, and some fans say those changes haven't been for the better.

The last standard or traditional installment was the critically acclaimed Crack in Time ; after that, Insomniac started experimenting with some new ideas and consequently, the review scores fell. All 4 One, a more multiplayer-oriented adventure, and last year's Full Frontal Assault , a more strategy-based title, didn't fare as well with critics or gamers.

But Insomniac boss Ted Price says the team will "continue to experiment" with the series. In a recent OPM UK interview , Price first said that Resistance was a "brutally difficult game to work on at times," and then spoke about R&C:

"They’re great games, I’m really proud of what we’ve accomplished with them. I think that, speaking for the team, we all want to continue experimenting with Ratchet. From the very beginning it’s been a universe that didn’t have any rules. We felt free to continue to keep taking it in new directions and maybe that’s what we’ll do. I don’t like to talk about where we’re going with future games, all I know is that Ratchet will always be near and dear to our hearts."

Well, that's good to hear but shouldn't they consider going back to the franchise's roots with the next installment? Those games always seemed to do extremely well, and ended up being widely beloved by gamers everywhere. Let's not totally abandon a winning formula, okay?

Only Japanese developers see the need to do that.

Resistance Collection Serves Up FPS Grandness This Winter

Say what you will; these are still some of the very best shooters ever made.

As revealed over at the PlayStation Blog , Insomniac Games and SCEA will deliver the Resistance Collection , which features the three PS3 entries for the agreeable price of $39.99. It's a steal!

Resistance: Fall of Man was probably the single biggest reason to own Sony's new console on launch day (if you were lucky enough), as this FPS gave us a glimpse of the future. Resistance 2 lost a little of the uniqueness the original title presented but was still a damn good game, and Resistance 3 was just plain awesome; still the best arsenal of inventive bad-ass weapons we've seen to date. Insomniac is also tossing in some DLC; there's the Aftermath Pack and a Skin Bundle for Resistance 2 and the Brutality and Survival Packs for Resistance 3 . The more content the better!

In addition, and as is often the case with such Collections on the PS3, this great assembly of FPS awesomeness will also offer 3D and PlayStation Move support. It's unfortunate that sales weren't great for R3 and Insomniac has backed away from the franchise but hey, might as well celebrate what we have, right? The Resistance Collection will be available "this winter" and we can't wait.

Sony Has “No Plans” To Pursue Another Resistance Entry

Sadly, the fantastic Resistance 3 didn't sell all that well, and developer Insomniac has moved on to other things.

So when might we see another entry in the critically acclaimed franchise? Well, SCEE Online producer Daniel Brooke told OPM UK that right now, the series is on hold. "We have no definitive plans," said Brooke, who worked on Resistance: Burning Skies for the PlayStation Vita. It's likely that we'll see the "Resistance" name again somewhere down the road, but there's no knowing when, or what team might adopt it.

It's really quite annoying that this franchise never got the sales recognition it deserved, despite the high critical praise. There are a lot of great shooters out there, of course, but few delivered on the single-player front the way Resistance did. It was even a pioneer in the multiplayer realm, too, as the second title supported 60 players at once. I still remember first seeing Fall of Man , the one PS3 launch game that hinted at what that system was capable of…

Resistance Trilogy Set For May?

An excited Resistance fan sent us a link this morning that rekindled our deep-set love of Insomniac's franchise.

Head on over to the French branch of Amazon , where you will find a listing for the Resistance Trilogy.

The apparent release date is May 16 and the price is €59.99, which means gamers here in North America might be able to anticipate a slightly earlier date (perhaps May 13) and a standard price tag of $59.99. As for what's included in the package, it doesn't take a genius to figure that out; it will feature the three Resistance installments on the PlayStation 3, all of which released to significant critical acclaim, even if they all didn't exactly burn up the sales charts.

If you missed out on maybe two or more of these games, and you've always wanted to finish up the franchise, this could be perfect. Of course, we have to wait for Sony to confirm this Trilogy for US shores but it seems almost inevitable that such an announcement is forthcoming.
