Resistance 3 Beta Cap Raised, “New Stuff” This Weekend

I have to admit, that Resistance 3 multiplayer beta is a ton o' fun. Very refreshing in some ways I think.

If you missed it, you can read our impressions on the sample, and if you've been enjoying yourself right along, Insomniac has some good news for you.

A reader, who keeps a close eye on various Twitter feeds, including that of Insomniac Community Manager James Stevenson , has forwarded this info. As you can see, Stevenson has announced an increase for the beta level cap; it's going from 20 to 30 this weekend. Plus, he mentions that we'll get some "new stuff" to toy around with; unfortunately, he didn't elaborate on that "stuff." Even so, anything new for this beta is encouraging. It's just another excuse to keep playing, all the way up until the game's release.

By the way, in case you've forgotten, Resistance 3 arrives on September 6. That's only a little over a week away. Deep Silver's Dead Island shares the same release day, by the way, and you can expect more on that one. We'll be involved in a Q&A roundtable this week.

Insomniac: Another Developer May Get Resistance 4

Insomniac is one hell of a developer. Can you imagine if another team picked up the Resistance franchise…?

First, the studio's creative director, Marcus Smith, said another developer could potentially handle the creation of Resistance 4 . But in speaking to VideoGamer , Insomniac writer Jon Paquette said he'd rather keep Resistance in-house although ultimately, it'd be Sony's decision. Said Paquette:

"There are a lot of great developers out there. There are a lot of great shooter developers, and I'm sure there are a lot of people who would love to get their hands on Resistance because it's such a fun universe to create. I think Resistance is a fun place to play, with all the weapons, all the Chimera – it's a really great universe for games, because there are so many options."

Sony owns the IP so if they want to give Resistance to someone else, they could. But if they do, Paquette added that he'd like "have a lot of meetings" with the chosen developer, because as a writer, he knows a lot of the back story that shouldn't go ignored.

Resistance 3 will be on store shelves in less than two weeks, and it'll be interesting to see the critical and gamer reception. But if the series ended up going elsewhere, what studio would you like to see at the helm? Resistance has such a singular flair when it comes to shooters; we're worried that only Insomniac can maintain that style…

GameStop Offers Resistance 3 With 3DTV Package

If you were disappointed to see Sony replace Resistance 3 with MotorStorm: Apocalypse in that sweet 3DTV bundle , you'll appreciate this gesture by GameStop.

When it was first announced, the package in question boasted a 24" 3D HDTV, a set of 3D glasses, and a copy of Insomniac's latest shooter. Then Sony made the switch and everyone went, "hey…that's not quite as attractive." But a reader sent us over to GameStop's listing :

As you can see, the retailer will toss in a copy of Resistance 3 alongside MotorStorm: Apocalypse provided you pre-order the bundle. It'll arrive in November if you're interested. Now, it could just be that GameStop doesn't want to piss off everyone who had already pre-ordered the package, before Sony dropped R3. But even if that's the case, so what? At least we still get two great games with an excellent TV for only $499.99. That ain't bad, right?

Resistance 3 Multiplayer Dev Diary: Modes And Abilities

I'll be delivering my beta impressions very soon but in the meantime, you may want to check out the cogs of the machine.

…boy, that sounded a lot better in my head. Anyway, I was attempting to allude to the behind-the-scenes information from Insomniac, concerning the multiplayer. It's a new developer diary and if you plan to partake of the online fun in the upcoming shooter, you should probably visit the PlayStation Blog . There you will find a video detailing the active and passive abilities, and the "inspirations in developing Resistance 3 's multiplayer philosophy, from play modes and weapons to special abilities." Personally, I'm a big fan of such videos; they give me an idea as to how designers implement their ideas through a series of phases. It isn't just magic, as I often like to think it is.

Resistance 3 has gone gold and will be ready to roll on September 6. The Chimera are swarming; it's our last chance to get rid of 'em for good.

An Apocalypse Replaces Resistance 3 In 3DTV Bundle

Of course, the first question everyone is going to have is, " why ?"

And unfortunately, we don't have the answer. Initially, it was revealed that Sony would launch a sweet 3DTV bundle, which would include a 24" 3D HDTV, a set of 3D glasses, and a copy of Insomniac's upcoming shooter, Resistance 3 . But then, that bundle sorta changed out of the blue; Amazon now lists it with MotorStorm: Apocalypse rather than the third Resistance installment. What's going on?

We don't know why Sony changed the attractive bundle, but a reader tells us R3 developer Insomniac Games has confirmed the change at their Twitter page :

"For those asking about the 3DTV bundle:http://t.co/y0o9u4F — Motorstorm: Apocolypse replaced Resistance 3. Sorry for any inconvenience."

They went on to say that no 3DTV bundle will feature Resistance 3 and that "Sony makes the decision on that front." So of course, all this begs the question above: "why the switch?" Wouldn't it make more sense for a newer – and bigger – title to be included in such a bundle? It's set for release this fall and Apocalypse has been out for a while, so…

Any ideas?
