Back in November, Sony celebrated PlayStation 4's two-year anniversary by announcing the system had passed 30 million sold worldwide .
But how did the generation's leading console fare in a holiday season where PS4 exclusives were sparse?
Oh, quite well, actually. Today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) announced that PS4 achieved a sold-through number of 5.7 million units during the 2015 holiday season. This means the system is just shy of the 36 million mark overall. Software sales also "remained strong," as 35 million retail and digital copies of PS4 games sold during the season (as of January 3, 2016).
Additionally, 60 percent more users signed up for PlayStation Plus at the end of 2015 as opposed to the conclusion of the previous year. Said SCE President and Global CEO Andrew House:
"We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever. We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences, and look forward to bringing an unprecedented games portfolio from third party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, including UNCHARTED 4: A Thief's End, New Hot Shots Golf (working title) and The Last Guardian, this coming year."
Sony previous referenced the "unprecedented rush" of PS4 games for 2016, and with a well-priced console (now even with Microsoft's Xbox One) and a horde of high-profile exclusives on the way, Sony may have this generation wrapped up already.
