You know, developers are gamers, too. They are aware of the trends…even the nasty recurring ones that won't seem to go away.
This generation, we have seen examples of decent games based on movies. In fact, there have been quite a few, even if they still aren't the norm. And if Propaganda Games isn't just blowing smoke, we should soon be able to add Tron: Evolution to the growing list of "exceptions to the rule." According to the studio's game director Darren Hedges, the team has gone to great lengths to buck the trend of mediocre games based on films. Here's what he had to say in a recent GamerZines interview :
"When we started TRON: Evolution, one of the key drivers for us was to dispel that movie based game stigma because it has sat around the past twenty years.
If you have played the game there will be parts in the movie, where you recognise certain aspects and events which you've taken part in. It may only be a five minute segment in the movie, but what they are talking about is the two hours worth of blood, sweat and tears which you played in the game."
This is another game that isn't based exactly on the film's story; the plot of the interactive entertainment is set before the events of the upcoming movie ("Tron: Legacy"). Hedges went on to say that game development usually "takes a lot longer than film development" and they actually sat down with the movie makers and did some brainstorming.
If you're old enough to remember "Tron," you're likely hoping both movie and game turn out to be worthwhile; that old arcade classic continues to play repeatedly in my brain whenever I think about it…
