PlayStation Portal Remains A Best-Seller

Sony’s remote play device, the PlayStation Portal, has remained a top-seller since its introduction last year.

Game analyst Mat Piscatella took to Bluesky to share August numbers. Besides the Portal, the Midnight Black DualSense topped the chart in terms of accessories, the PS5 Pulse Elite Wireless Headset White was the best-selling headphones, and the PlayStation brand itself remains top dog followed by Xbox and the Switch.

The PS5 DualSense Wireless Controller in Midnight Black was August’s best-selling accessory in dollar sales, while PlayStation Portal remained the best-seller for 2024 year-to-date.

The success of the PlayStation Portal cannot be understated here, despite selling to a sub-group of a sub-group, that being gamers who want to play away from their PlayStation console, it still managed to be a surprise hit even outside of the States and even to Sony.

Sony’s Keeping Tabs On Handheld Market

With the runaway success of the PlayStation Portal still fresh in Sony’s minds, it seems they’re keeping tabs on the handheld market. It’s not that surprising, though, we should take it all with a huge grain of salt.

Insider Tom Henderson, who has a pretty solid track record, took to Twitter to claim that Sony is “paying close attention” to the handheld market. This, of course, brings hope that Sony will return to the handheld market, which it’s long-since abandoned since the (financial) failure that was the Vita.

The PlayStation Portal was kind of a weird peripheral for the PS5 and its success was even weirder, topping hardware charts, including in the UK and Japan as well as outselling the Xbox. Truly, despite being a Remote Play device, it’s stuck with PlayStation gamers.

It is worth pointing out that rumors of a “Vita 2” have bubbled to the top. Here’s hoping for Sony to properly return to the handheld market.

PlayStation Portal Dominates UK’s Peripheral Market

It’s no secret that the PlayStation Portal is a smash hit peripheral for the PlayStation 5, but as we march nearly a year since its debut, just like it saw success in the US, over across the pond, the Portal is the best-selling accessory in gaming. The data is marked by revenue, so it might be slightly skewed due to its lofty price, but other peripherals like the DualSense Edge are still underperforming it.

As noted by GamesIndustry.biz, which shared GfK data, the peripheral has been the country’s number one or number two pick since its debut back in November, barring January when Sony realized the demand was too much for what it planned for at the time, giving rise to stock issues.

There is a place for the hardware, but we certainly hope this will signal that PlayStation gamers want more portability when it comes to Sony’s strong line of games, and perhaps they will listen and produce a new handheld. It’s feeling more and more like a pipedream, but we know we’re not alone.

Shoddy New PlayStation Portable Rumor Surfaces

It’s no secret that fans are clambering for a more portable way to enjoy their favorite PlayStation games, well a new rumor has surfaced claiming people will be able to do just that. Earlier this year, it was also alleged that a new Vita was in the works.

On X, YouTube content creator TCMF alleges more info on this supposed new system. It’s also supposedly going to be able to play PS5 games through updates imilar to the Steam Deck.

Obviously, Sony is probably not going to actually do this — it’s been long-established that it’s left the mobile console market behind with the sad failure of the PlayStation Vita. With the bizarre success of the PlayStation Portal, though, it isn’t impossible for Sony to reconsider jumping into the mobile market again.

We just don’t expect it any time soon, nor will we anticipate this rumor to have any validity, considering how often these sorts of “leaks” surface.

PlayStation Portal Demand Exceeds Supply

The PlayStation Portal is making waves across the world, from selling out in Japan to even outselling the Xbox in some regions. Now, it appears “demand has exceeded supply.”

As said by Circana’s Mat Piscatella on Twitter, while he couldn’t cite unit sales, the peripheral is proving to be popular, marking itself in the top five hardware sales back in November and ending up scalped for one reason or another. Its demand exceeding supply for some months now shouldn’t be too shocking as it was in high demand almost immediately.

Luckily, PlayStation knows just how big of a deal the PlayStation Portal is, with PS exec Hiromi Wakai admitted back in February that it’s surpassed the expectations the Japanese console maker set for it.

Sea Of Thieves Will Be Playable On PlayStation Portal

Rare’s swashbuckling multiplayer adventure, Sea of Thieves, is going to be playable on the PlayStation Portal, Unfortunately, the dev also struck down the idea of a PSVR 2 version, while also kind of just letting the idea float around, stating it has “no plans.”

On the official FAQ page, Microsoft revealed that the team over at Rare tested the game on PlayStation’s remote play peripheral to great success, stating that it “will be playable via the PlayStation Portal.” We’re not fully convinced it will be a great experience, but that’s neither here nor there. The convenience of it still exists and that’s really all that matters.

Sea of Thieves is among the four games that Microsoft has greenlit to arrive on other platforms as part of its new model, with the game arriving later this month.
