PS5 Pro Release Discussions Started Before Generation Even Started

Before the ninth generation of consoles even started, Sony was talking about the PlayStation 5 Pro. Advancements in technology were to blame.

In an IGN interview, senior principal product manager Toshi Aoki revealed talks of the mid-gen refresh started before the 2020 launch of the standard PS5. The tech within the base model was already locked-in but there was some advancements that Sony didn’t want to ignore entirely.

As expected, Aoki also went on to discuss the new features as well as defend the console’s lofty price tag. Regardless, with how long it takes to properly make a console, especially one with as bells and whistles as the PS5, it’s not too shocking that the console maker was looking at the next step when tech advanced.

Beyond that, though, the PS6 is supposedly in development and will reportedly have a focus on backwards comparability. It isn’t clear both how true it is or how far back the compatibility would go.

Sony Announces Limited Edition Collection To Celebrate PlayStation 30-Year Anniversary

This year marks the 30-year anniversary of PlayStation and Sony eyes to help celebrate the occasion with themed nostalgia.

In a similar fashion to the PS4 Pro and the PlayStation 20-year Anniversary, Sony is set to release the upcoming Limited Edition Collection for the PS5 Slim/Pro, the DualSense Edge Controller, and the PlayStation Portal all themed after the PS1 (via a report by ComicBook). The PlayStation 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Collection will also include other PS1-themed accessories such as a USB cable modeled after the DualShock controller connector, PS stickers/posters, and a PS paperclip. Even the boxes of the consoles/accessories will be designed after the classic PlayStation console/accessory boxes (according to the PlayStation Blog).

No specific prices for these consoles and accessories modeled after the classic PS1 grey color scheme have been officially announced yet. Despite this, fans can still expect the 30th Anniversary Collection to be out on November 21, with pre-orders available starting September 26. Sony also highlights the 30th Anniversary Edition PlayStation 5 Pro will only have 12,300 units available. This number is possibly a nod to the PS1 releasing in Japan on 1994/12/03.

An additional detail to note is that the 30-year Anniversary Edition PS5 Pro and PS5 Slim Digital Edition (the 2023 console redesign) will include a vertical stand. This is in contrast to the vertical stand being sold separately from the regular PS5 Slim, and same for the upcoming PS5 Pro.

Otherwise, fans are also able to follow an official webpage for the PlayStation 30-year Anniversary to find past celebration announcements and be updated for upcoming ones.

PS5 Pro Price “Not That Bad,” Says EA Exec

Earlier this month, PlayStation unveiled the long-rumored PS5 Pro, facing immense backlash due to its $700 price tag. Now, EA general manager Respawn Entertainment co-founder Vince Zampella has come to the Japanese giant’s defense.

Addressed by IGN, the exec pointed to past generation consoles and how they could end up in that price same price bracket. Notably, sure, gaming as a hobby is expensive, especially as game prices soar to $70, but that doesn’t mean the console, especially a mid-gen refresh, should be priced so high.

Zampella isn’t totally out of touch, though, as he does note that it’s definitely expensive and that not everybody will be able to afford it.

“So I mean, it’s a balance. Is it expensive for people? Absolutely. Not everybody will be able to afford it. Would it be better if it was cheaper? Sure. I want more people to have it. But it makes sense, really.”
