State Of Play Returns This Week

PlayStation teased that its occasional event, the State of Play, is returning Thursday after a dry spell. The event will focus on PS5 and PSVR 2 games.

On the PlayStation Blog, it was announced that the State of Play event is returning in a 30+-minute presentation. Based on the light details we have, it will kick off on most mainstream video sharing platforms at 3 PM PST complete with 14 different games in the pipeline.

We aren’t totally sure what games are going to appear.

Free Games For PlayStation Plus Essential Subscribers (June 2024)

Starting June 4, PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers and beyond are able to snag these high-profile games. Remember to snag this month’s free games before it’s too late.

Hot off the press, the PlayStation Blog shared the trio of free games for its Essential tier of subscribers.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake

Kicking the trio of games off is a licensed game — SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. This underwater adventure by Purple Lamp is the return of everyone’s favorite sponge under the watchful eye of THQ Nordic, which was in charge of publishing some of the franchise’s most-beloved platformers.

While critics found it underwhelming, its audience found a lot of charm behind this little licensed romp.

AEW Fight Forever

When you think of wrestling games, your mind probably gravitates toward the WWE line of games, but there are others, chief among them being AEW Fight Forever. This Yuke’s developed wrestler has a little of an older looking charm than its WWE counterpart, but it also looks to suffer from a similar fate — low scoring.

Just like most modern WWE entries, it’s not very well-liked, but it’s also not overly hated, either.

Streets Of Rage 4

The return of the classic side-scrolling beat ’em’ up, Streets of Rage, came in the form of Streets of Rage 4 back in 2020. Developed by a trio of developers consisting of Dotemu, which also acts as its publisher, Lizardcube, and Guard Crush Games, this return to classic beat ’em’ ups is the last in the Essentials line.

Unlike the other games, Streets of Rage 4 has seen praise from both fans and critics alike. Nostalgia probably plays a factor in it, but who are we to judge? We just wanna hit people.

PlayStation’s Days Of Play Sale Reportedly Returns Next Week

PlayStation

PlayStation’s annual Days of Play sale will reportedly return next week. Previous years saw everything from to hardware getting a nice slash in price.

Dataminer and ever-reliable insider bilbil-kun writes on DeaLabs (via VGC) that May 29 through June 12 will see a wealth of discounts. It’s worth pointing out that PlayStation Plus subscriptions had prices reduced by as much 30% in 2020.

It isn’t clear what will be discounted, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony did have a bunch of stuff under its sleeve, considering we’re still anticipating a showcase this month.

Report Alleges New PlayStation Handheld Is In The Works

ps-vita

A new rumor has backed up previous rumors of a new PlayStation handheld from earlier this year. Supposedly, it will play PS4 games at-launch.

Russian journalist Anton Logvinov (via ResetEra) shared that they can confirm the development of the handheld. Previously, they leaked both the Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn PC ports ahead of their announcements. He doesn’t touch on much more than it supposedly playing PS4 games at-launch, likening it to the Steam Deck.

It’s worth pointing out that MooresLawIsDead, a notable leaker in the PlayStation space who was the first to share PS5 Pro specs, shares certainty of a PS Vita-esque handheld.

“About Half” Of PlayStation’s MAU Are On PS4

Upgrade PS4 games to PS5

PlayStation is having a very weird time right now, with fairly strong sales of the PS5 as it enters the latter part of its life cycle to apparently having 118 million monthly active users, with half of them still on the PS4. The number is a bit skewed as it also takes into account the legacy PS3 and even PS Vita players, but even so, that’s a small, small percentage.

During Sony’s recent earnings report (as shared by Stephen Totilo on X), Sony president Hiroki Totoki expressed that compared to its monthly active users, around half of that is still on PS4, even after repeated statements about efforts to transition PS4 players into PS5 players.

“Cumulative [PS5] sales is 59 million units or plus. Compared to MAU, still, about half of the people are playing on PS4. So, console generation overlap will be handled well and MAU will steadily increase”

The other important thing, though, is why people aren’t hopping on board with the PS5. Obviously, part of it is the lack of games that compel players enough, additionally, there’s the steep price tag on the console, especially as it’s entering its latter half of its life, which for PS4 meant a price reduction.

Until Sony does something like that, we have a hunch that not much is going to change.

Bungie Offering Free Access To 3 Destiny 2 DLC Ahead Of The Final Shape

PlayStation and PC players can embark on The Witch Queen, Beyond Light, and Shadowkeep DLCs free of charge ahead of The Final Shape for a limited time. If you wanna be technical, too, PlayStation Plus subscribers also have access to Lightfall as part of this month’s free games.

As revealed on the PlayStation Blog, dubbed the Expansion Open Access, any Destiny 2 player can hop into the trio of DLCs from May 7 through June 3. Considering the not-so-light budget it threw to make The Final Shape, we can’t blame Bungie for trying to drum up the hype.

This also will make or break the studio’s future, which is said to get taken over by Sony wholly if it fails to meet financial targets. Since its acquisition, it was just an independent subsidiary of Sony, but if things go south, it’s all too possible its multi-plat focus could be in jeopardy.
