Phantasy Star Online 2 Finally Heading To PS4 In The West

Phantasy Star Online 2

After over a decade of waiting, PlayStation fans will finally get their hands on Sega‘s Phantasy Star Online 2 on the PS4 in the west. This is a particularly notable event as the game initially hit the Japanese market exclusively on PC before heading to the console market six years ago, but stayed in Japan.

Its current version, Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis is already available on competing platforms here in North America, but for one reason or another, the idea of bringing the PS4 version to the west was shelved.

New Genesis takes place 1,000 years after the original PSO2’s story. Luckily, the game will release with cross-play, meaning you can play with your chums even if they’re playing on at least PC. It will also be fully localized complete with translated text and English voices. Above all, though, much like its previous versions, it will also keep to its free-to-play nature.

Strap in as PlayStation fans in the west can get their hands on this ARPG on August 31.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Hitting Vita Next Year…Presumably

It's never a good idea to assume but then again…it can be fun.

Sega has announced that Phantasy Star Online 2 will launch in North America and Europe next year. The long-anticipated sequel will adopt the controversial free-to-play format when it arrives.

The only downside is that the publisher didn't mention platforms. We're fairly certain it'll come to the PC but beyond that, we can only guess based on the Japanese platforms: It's already out on PC in Japan, and PSO2 is also slated to hit the PlayStation Vita, iOS, and Android platforms. Therefore, we'd like to assume that a Vita iteration is coming our way, too.

If you don't remember, the first PSO launched on the Dreamcast back in 2001 and was one of the very first subscription-based MMOs on consoles. It gained quite the loyal following and those fans have been waiting for a sequel…okay, it's a really long wait, but other PSO titles have dropped in between, including Phantasy Star Revolution , which came to the PS2, Xbox 360 and PC. Yeah, PS2; it was on the cusp of the new generation; the 360 was already out but the PS3 wasn't.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Confirmed For Vita

Hey, everyone remember when Phantasy Star Online was one of the games for the Dreamcast?

Well, the series has continued on in various incarnations since those days, and the latest title has been announced for the PC in Japan. Interestingly enough, as revealed on Friday, Phantasy Star Online 2 will also be coming to the PlayStation Vita.

Initially, it was only confirmed for the PC but a new video (see it below) confirms that the Vita version of the new MMO will be ready to go next year. It also seems as if Vita and PC users will be able to play together in the engaging fantasy world, which is great news for fans. However, as you might expect, there's no word on whether or not PSO2 will come to North America. One might say the chances are slim, but you never know…maybe if it sells well enough in Japan…
