Helldivers 2 Breaches 12 Million Helldivers

Helldivers 2

Arrowhead Game Studio’s Helldivers 2 has breached 12 million sales since its release in early February. This impressive number was helped in no small part due to its day-and-date release to PC, as well.

Interim CEO Hiroki Totoki revealed during its just released fiscal year earnings report that it surpassed the record set by God of War Ragnarok, which means that Helldivers 2 is Sony’s best-selling published game in its history.

It did have a rough patch earlier this month when  Sony was demanding PC players link their PSN to continue playing, only to backtrack at the last minute after intense backlash, leading to its PC reviews slowly but surely recovering from the controversy.

Helldivers 2 Exec Praises PC Community Voicing Opinion On PSN Link Requirement

Arrowhead Game Studio’s CEO is praising the community for voicing their displeasure in the PSN account Helldivers 2 debacle. At the last minute, Sony pulled plans to require Steam users link their Steam profiles to their PSN accounts to continue playing the shooter. The massive amount of backlash stems largely from people who don’t want PSN accounts or those who don’t live in a region where the service is available.

On Twitter, CEO Johan Pilestedt said he was “impressed” by the “willpower of the Helldivers 2 community” as well the ability to collaborate. While the act itself of linking Steam and PSN will still continue to be an optional feature, it won’t fall as a requirement, at least not with Arrowhead’s big hit.

Frankly, we’re not that surprised, the PC community is what made Helldivers 2 so popular, to begin with. Without the PC release, it wouldn’t even breach the top 20, much less the top seven highest-grossing PlayStation-published games.

Helldivers 2 Marked As Sony’s 7th Highest-Grossing Game

Helldivers 2

A new report surfaced indicating that Helldivers 2 is the seventh highest-grossing game under Sony’s umbrella. This huge spike is largely thanks to its day-and-date PC debut, as well.

A Circana report shared by Mat Piscatella on Twitter revealed the game’s success among its peers, with extremely strong sales in both February and March and consistently drawing in over 100K players at a time, based on SteamDB, at least — that is to say, it’s not reflective of its performance on PlayStation.

If Sony wasn’t to release the game on PC, it wouldn’t even “rank among the top 20.” In March, the game was playing second fiddle to Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2, and even climbing to the top spot over Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in February.

Newest Helldivers 2 Patch Is Causing Crashes

Helldivers 2’s 1.000.103 patch is leading to bouts of crashes for players. Fear not, though, Arrowhead Game Studios is on the case.

In a statement on the game’s Discord (via IGN), Arrowhead’s community manager, Twinbeard, says the team is “deep down in the trenches” working on fixing the issue as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the patch also seemed to affect Galactic War’s player contribution tracking, which of course is kind of an important part of the third-person shooter, and the team is looking into that, as well.

“We know that many of you are experiencing a lot of crashes at the moment (seemingly linked to the patch deployed earlier today, which at least resolved the persistent friend request issue for a lot of players). Our team is deep down in the trenches digging into the issue as we speak. We are on alert ready to update on any changes here. We’re very sorry @everyone for not being able to supply you with the glorious feeling of bug and bot stomping and hope to have the game more stable as soon as possible.”

Helldivers 2 “Blows Through” Estimates

Arrowhead Game Studio CEO Johan Pilestedt has revealed Helldivers 2 has sold around a million copies. Bearing in mind, the game hasn’t even been out for a week.

On Twitter (via Insider Gaming), Pilestedt responded to a comment claiming the game hasn’t breached 500K sales, so it’s all too possible for it to play second fiddle to Palworld as its Steam sales rise again. He described the current top spot gap as “very large.”

Responding to another comment centered around Sony’s decision to almost never disclose sales numbers, he notes that the game is blowing through estimates at the very least.
