Oddworld: Soulstorm Creator Sees PS Plus As “Double-Edged Sword”

Oddworld: Soulstorm

During his appearance on the Xbox Expansion Podcast (via VGC), Oddworld: Soulstorm creator, Lorne Lanning, might be regretting including his latest entry of the Oddworld franchise into PlayStation Plusfree game in April 2021

Despite the nature of the matter, offering the game free of charge to PlayStation Plus members, it appears they weren’t expecting as many people to take advantage of it. Oddworld Inhabitants, expected anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 copies claimed, but it was boosted well-beyond that number with the game downloaded a whopping four million times, making the creator fear they lost out on quite a bit of money.

“It’s kind of a double-edged sword… I’ll give you an example around Soulstorm. We were hitting a number of legacy technical debt issues and talent issues and you know, the game industry is emerging fast, huge companies are paying fortunes.”

Lanning wasn’t even sure about giving the game away for free because it just didn’t make much sense considering the lack of PS5s out in the world. Even so, the unexpected success of the game caught him off guard and wound up making Oddworld: Soulstorm the top-downloaded PS5 game of the month.

Oddworld: Soulstorm Enhanced Edition Comes Free For Existing Owners

Oddworld: Soulstorm

Oddworld: Soulstorm is launching the Enhanced Edition later this month. This new edition fosters better gameplay mechanics, audio balancing improvements, and improved Slig and follower AI.

Depending on the version you get, you even get new areas. For PlayStation players, this comes in the form of Toby’s Escape. If you already own the title, especially since it was in the PlayStation Plus lineup when it launched, and feel you’ve been gipped, we do have some good news for you. The Enhanced Edition is free for all existing owners as an update.

Oddworld: Soulstorm launched rocky back in April. The continuation of Abe’s adventure was riddled with annoying bugs and glitches that had to be patched out, like players getting booted to the home screen or Abe getting stuck in one spot, making the player’s only escape reverting back to the last checkpoint.

Here’s April’s PlayStation Plus Lineup

PlayStation Plus

April’s rolled around the corner and you know what that means – free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers. This month will consist of Zombie Army 4: Dead War and Days Gone for PS4 and Oddworld: Soulstorm.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War [PS4]

Last year’s Zombie Army 4: Dead War puts you in the shoes of a soldier face-to-face with hordes of zombies sent out by Hitler. You don’t have to play alone, either, up to three friends can tag along for the ride in this alt-history adventure.

Days Gone [PS4]

Venture through the Pacific Northwest and battle against huge hordes of Freakers in 2019’s Days Gone. Come up with plans, customize your gear, and be mindful of the time and whether as such small details can be life-or-death.

Oddworld: Soulstorm [PS5]

This month has a special little gift to those who were able to coup themselves a PS5. This month you can nab Oddworld: Soulstorm for free. Rejoin the cog-turned-hero, Abe, as he continues to save his fellow Mudokons directly after 2014’s New ‘N Tasty.

You will be able to nab this month’s free PlayStation Plus games from April 6 through to May 3.
