Mortal Kombat 1 Gets Cross-Play Feature In February

Back when Mortal Kombat 1 launched in May, there was plenty of post-launch content announced to be in the pipeline, from the star-studded season pass to the eventual release of crossplay support.

In an update video focused on the return of fighter Quan-Chi, Community Manager Tyler Lansdown let out that cross-play support between PS5, Xbox Series, and PC is coming out in a February update.

Alongside early access to Quan-Chi, which is now fully available as of December 21, a new Wi-Fi filter has been added that’ll allow players to accept or decline fights based on their opponent’s internet connection. Which feels like a must in the modern-day fighter scene.

Mortal Kombat 1 was nominated for Best Fighting at the Game Awards but ultimately lost out to long-running fighting rival Street Fighter 6. Still both games launched with plenty of high praise from critics and fans.

The update in February is likely to be one of many updates the game will receive, as game director Ed Boon revealed in a panel at Brazilian event CCXP23. In the event (via VGC), Boon confirmed that the game would receive a second part to its story mode alongside cementing that the studio will be committing support for the game for even longer than Mortal Kombat 11 received.

Warner Bros. Responds To Mortal Kombat 1’s Premium Fatality Animation Controversy

Warner Bros. has responded to criticism of adding fatalities to Mortal Kombat 1’s premium storefront for $10. Unlike MK11, these features can’t be earned by progression — they have to be purchased with real money.

Eurogamer reports that WB gave the most community-neutral corporate response of “we appreciate the feedback.” While the in-game shop was blasted by its community for selling exclusive cosmetics and gear without alternatives, things reached a boiling point when it was revealed that it introduced premium fatality animations for the holidays that could be acquired through the in-game store with its premium currency.

It’s also worth pointing out the value of everything, as $10 is what this fatality animation’s going for. Meanwhile, you could get multiple of MK11’s DLC characters for $20. That said, if you pick up the Halloween fatality, you can also get two other “free” cosmetics — a Thanksgiving fatality and a winter fatality.

Supposedly, these fatalities will show up in a seasonal bundle that will cost $30. Considering Warner Bros. wants to make all its IPs into live service games, we don’t have much hope that it’ll listen to the community. Especially, as the game continues to sell.

Mortal Kombat 1 Sells Nearly 3 Million Units

Since its launch in September, NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat 1 has sold over three million units across all platforms. Its critical reception and widespread acclaim certainly boost those numbers.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed the sales figure during its recent quarterly earnings call. Bear in mind this is barring post-launch content, so we can assume once something strikes someone’s fancy, they’ll no doubt pony up the dough to push the game’s sales even further.

We already know Invincible’s Omni-Man is set to make his MK debut next week. Others on the way include Quan-Chi and Peacemaker this year. Come next year, we’ll also see Ermac and Homelander from Prime Video’s The Boys, alongside we’re some more unannounced fighters. Interestingly, it does seem alternate skins are off the table, at least for Omni-Man.

Mortal Kombat 1 Cross-Play Will Come Post-Launch

Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1, the confusingly named latest entry to long-running franchise, won’t come bundled in with cross-play at launch. Instead, it will be something added at a later date.

The news was revealed on X, and pretty quickly, fans weren’t happy. It’s somewhat understandable, not only is the console player base of MK itself more fragmented, but also a good chunk of other fighters featured cross-play out the gate like Street Fighter 6 and even MK1’s precursor, MK11. The upcoming Tekken 8 will also feature cross-play, so this news certainly hasn’t done the new entry any favors.

In contrast, though, some note that Mortal Kombat is a widely popular fighter and that just because it seems the player base is fragmented, doesn’t mean that it actually is, and there’s likely going to be plenty of players online regardless of your platform of choice. To mitigate the backlash, NetherRealm Studios assured players that it’s working hard to bring the feature to life.

What do you think? Are you excited about Mortal Kombat 1? Is it a deal breaker that it won’t come with cross-play? Let us know below!

Reptile Joins Mortal Kombat 1 Roster

Mortal Kombat 1, Reptile

Fans can take control of Reptile once again in Mortal Kombat 1. While not as well-known as Scorpion or Sub-Zero, Reptile has been in the games since the beginning.

NetherRealm Studios’ latest trailer features a trio of new fighters entering the ring. Alongside the Syzoth (Reptile), we also have Ashrah and Havik. Sareena is also featured. However, she seems exclusive to the new gameplay mechanic — Kameo Fighter. In case you don’t know what that means, it’s basically like having a special move and partner at your disposal able to quickly jump in to deal some damage with the matter of a press of a button.

Reptile was the main focus of the trailer, which debuted at EVO on Sunday. The trailer also shared some sporadic story beats and more of what to expect in Mortal Kombat 1.

Even though there are so many different fighters it could’ve featured, NetherRealm choosing Reptile is a generally good thing as it confirms the importance of this fighter who’s been around since the beginning. Debuting in the original arcade cabinet as an unlockable fighter and making appearances in much of the MK franchise, his last fighting appearance was in Mortal Kombat X, noticeably absent from the previous entry of MK 11, only appearing as cameo appearances like within the Krypt or as a Shang Tsung transformation.

Injustice 3 Isn’t Out Of The Picture

Mortal Kombat 1, Injustice 3

While plenty are excited for Mortal Kombat 1, the confusingly titled next entry in the MK series by NetherRealm Studios, which is releasing sooner than we expected, we’re so used to developers announcing games a year or so before their release, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t gonna show some love to their other fighting game series in the future.

Injustice 3 will likely still happen. Concerns were raised when people realized NetherRealm went with another entry to Mortal Kombat after MK11. They’ve been consistent with jumping between it and the Injustice series.

During an IGN interview, though, they popped the question of whether the franchise is over with, to which Ed Boon simply responded with a simple “not at all.” The two reasons they stepped passed Injustice 3 was because of COVID reasons as well as upgrading the engine from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4.

“We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe. So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realised, ‘Okay, let’s do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we’ll get back to the Injustice games.’”

Mortal Kombat 1 is due out current-gen consoles on September 19.
