Move Ships 10.5 Million Worldwide

The PlayStation Move has all sorts of potential and thus far, a great many have responded to that potential.

According to new statistics unveiled at a Game Developers Conference session (as cited by IGN ), Sony developer support engineer Gabe Ahn announced that Move has shipped 10.5 million units worldwide.

This includes combined shipments of Move controllers and Navigation controllers, though, and they didn't mention a specific sold-through number. However, it's significant to note that as of October, Sony reported 8.3 million shipped, which means Move has done relatively well since that time. Ahn added that the motion-sensing system is "part of our DNA" and clearly, they intend to stick with it for a while. Thus far, the most popular title by a long shot is Sports Champions , which is included in the Starter Pack.

Most would agree Move needs some AAA software to keep it relevant and exciting and hopefully, we'll start seeing more of that. And hey, Sorcery isn't too far off now , so that could push more units.

Sony: Move Could’ve, Should’ve Done Better In The UK

The PlayStation Move is approaching 10 million units sold worldwide, and is actually on par with Kinect sales .

However, Sony still thinks they could've done better in the UK. New SCE UK boss Fergal Gara told MCV that although Sony's motion-sensing device has a "solid foothold," software sales haven't been up to snuff.

"It is the strength of the software that goes with it that is paramount. And we’ve had a widely different performance from the various Move titles. Sports Champions is by far the most successful, selling a couple of hundred thousand units, which is a healthy performance. But it does vary thereafter.

So I’d say we are in the market, we have got a shout. Forthcoming titles are going to be important. We take some encouragement from things we can mention, such as Sorcery which is on the schedule, and other things that we know are bubbling under. It is a focus from a studio point-of-view to bring out stronger titles."

SCEE head man Jim Ryan added that in Europe, the middle part of 2011 was a little slow, and the company is in the process of becoming more "clear-minded" on various marketing aspects. Interestingly enough, Ryan said they've been "very energetic" with their Move campaigns, and early indications are that this has "paid off." It's just a matter of looking towards the future right now, and trying to push Move as frequently as possible.

But it's always about the software, right? In this industry, it always is. We've been saying that for a while .

Move Isn’t As Far Behind Kinect As Many Gamers Think

Slow and steady wins the race.

At the start of the new motion-sensing battle between Sony and Microsoft, it was Kinect that bolted out to an early lead. But over time, sales have fallen off while Move's sales have remained solid.

The result? Move is now only about a million units behind Kinect in overall sales, and even that gap may be closing. Kinect hit 8 million sold in only two months, and then topped 10 million in March. Move has reached the 9 million mark (although we need recent stats). Said IndustryGamers' Steve Peterson:

"The Kinect's weakness has been the sales pattern, where 8 million devices sold in 2 months, and then in the next 10 months only 2 million more devices were sold. This has led to some concerns."

Ubisoft vice president of marketing Tony Key added that it isn't healthy to sell only during the holidays, and they'd "really like to see them [Microsoft] have some major launches during the non-holiday part of the year." There are a lot Kinect bundles out there for the holiday rush, after all.

If the two different sales arcs hold true next year, Move should surpass Kinect, especially if Sony can release a few much-needed AAA titles for their motion-sensing system.

Sony: Move Has Shipped 8.3 Million

The PlayStation Move still lacks a definite killer app, although shooter fans say the Sharpshooter accessory is pretty damn nifty.

During a GDC Online keynote address focusing on the PlayStation Move, SCEA developer support engineer Gabe Ahn confirmed that Move has shipped more than 8.3 million units worldwide. Sony also added that 80 games currently on store shelves boast Move support, and that number will unsurprisingly expand. The company also wanted to reinforce the diversity of such games; they range from EyePet to Killzone 3 and just about everything in between.

Ahn lastly wanted the audience to know that Move is not only diverse, but it also seems to work very well for most any control application. We've found it to be a little touchy but then again, that's part of the extreme sensitivity and accuracy of the device. We're still looking forward to games like Sorcery , which might entice a new wave of interested gamers.

Pachter: Move, Kinect To Sell 20-25 Million By End Of 2011

The world of video game technology continues to advance at a rapid rate, and there are no shortage of early adopters.

At least, that's how Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter sees it. The well-known industry analyst has predicted that both PlayStation Move and Microsoft's Kinect will hit 20-25 million combined sales before the end of 2011. However, he also warns that with the emergence of this fancy new hardware, we might see a dip in software sales. Said Pachter:

"Given recent guidance from Microsoft, it is likely that the two peripherals will have an installed base of 8 million by year-end, and depending upon pricing, we could see an installed base that approaches 20–25 million by year-end 2011.

These 20–25 million households are likely to buy 2–3 games apiece, resulting in software sales of 40–75 million units and publisher revenues of $1.6–3 billion next year. These sales are not all incremental; clearly, consumers who buy Kinect or Move are console owners, and presumably, they would have bought other games had they not purchased the peripherals."

Sony has recently revised their announcement of selling 4 million Move units worldwide ; that was a "shipped" number, not a "sold" number. They made a mistake in the press release they distributed. As it stands, the actual sales number is around 2.5 million; Microsoft has stated that Kinect sold over 1 million units in its first five days at retail. Both seem to be off to strong starts, but perhaps it'll be the compatible software lineup that will set them apart in the future…

So, you've got both Move and Kinect at home, right? You're all into supporting this stuff, huh? …okay, maybe it only makes sense to have one or the other.

Move Sells 4.1 Million Worldwide

How popular is the PlayStation Move? The answer: quite.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. (SCEI) announced that sales of Move have hit 4.1 million units worldwide (as of November). The advanced motion sensing system topped the 4 million plateau after only two months of availability in North America and Europe, and one month of availability in Japan. If you've been living under a rock, Move utilizes the PlayStation Eye and a wand "to detect precise movement, angle, and absolute position in 3D space of the user, thereby allowing users to intuitively play as if they are within the game." As of now, there are over 30 titles on store shelves that are either dedicated to Move or offer Move support as an option. This includes Sports Champions , EyePet , SingStar Dance , Resident Evil: Gold Edition , and the upcoming Killzone 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2 .

Additionally, Sony has confirmed that 41.6 million PS3 systems have been sold globally (as of September) and "the system is set to record another year of success" as it enters its 5th year of existence. The combination of true high-definition gaming, Blu-Ray, solid reliability, a free online Network, a superb lineup of exclusive titles, and an agreeable $300 price tag has allowed Sony's machine to rise. And you know, it seems clear PlayStation Move will assist hardware sales; 4.1 million is nothing to sneeze at.
