Mortal Kombat Vita To Boast Exclusive “Klassic Kostumes”

Mortal Kombat for the PlayStation Vita should be a beast of a fighter.

Not only will it include all the content from the console version, it will also boast a series of "klassic kostumes" that will be exclusive to the portable iteration.

This means players will have access to the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 versions of Ermac, Noob Saibot, Rain, Smoke, (Unmasked) Sub-Zero and Scorpion. They'll also receive a new alternate costume for Kenshi, plus the MK2 version of Ermac, Reptile, Sub-Zero and Scorpion. Unfortunately, it seems the female characters have been left out in the cold but that's okay…their costumes are cool enough, anyway.

Mortal Kombat arrives for the Vita on May 1.

Mortal Kombat Vita Drops On May 1

Who's ready to throw down while on the go?

NetherRealm Studios has gone on record saying that the Vita incarnation of Mortal Kombat will be awfully impressive, in that it really won't be much different from last year's successful and entertaining PS3 reboot .

And now, we've got a finalized release date: According to GameSpot , Mortal Kombat Vita will launch in North America on May 1 and in Europe on May 4. This nails down the vague "Spring 2012" release window, which means that in just about one month's time, fighting fans will be able to sample all of MK's glory along with 150 new Challenge Tower missions. And of course, there's touchscreen functionality as well, which ought to be interesting.

Mortal Kombat sold over 3 million copies and we're hoping the Vita installment will have success as well. It's just another great game for Sony's new portable; all new hardware can use great software!

Fighting Fans, Gather Round: Who Wants MK vs. SF?

Okay, so we're already getting Street Fighter X Tekken and Tekken X Street Fighter . But the possibilities are endless, right?

Crossover fighting games are nothing new, and let's not forget that Mortal Kombat has tested those experimental waters as well; you may recall Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. And while last year's MK reboot met with a bit more success, developer NetherRealm has been looking for ways to branch out and expand the series. They're also planning to attempt new IPs if recent rumors are any indication.

But for a moment, just try to imagine "Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter" (or vicey versey). The gaming world got to talking after MK guru Ed Boon posted up the following Twitter update :

"@sethkillian Yes, great catching up with you too. Looking forward to our first MKvsSF meeting. 1st order of business: MKvsSF or SFvsMK. ;)"

Obviously, that's not an official confirmation and based on the tone and context, Boon is most likely kidding around. But it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility, does it? And what do the fighting fans think? Is this something they'd like to see? Or would they rather the iconic MK characters take on a different established roster?

Ed Boon Confirms Mortal Kombat 10?

Last year's Mortal Kombat reboot was a tremendous success, so one would assume a new effort is in the works.

But there hasn't been anything official on that front…at least, not until now. According to StickSkills citing a Twitter discussion between MK co-creator Ed Boon and PlayStation social media manager Sid Shuman, "Mortal Kombat 10" may soon be unveiled. Here's the Tweet:

"RT @sidshuman So…are any publishers showing anything for DICE? Noobde: Other than MK10, nothing from us. ;)"

Boon is known for getting people talking, so this could just be a fun PR ploy. But then again, why wouldn't NetherRealm produce a new Mortal Kombat installment? They appear to be doing some great things with that Vita version , and the MK followers are definitely champing at the bit for a new installment. Last year's rejuvenating title went a long way towards restoring 100% faith in the bloody, iconic franchise.

So yeah, just…stay tuned.

Mortal Kombat On Vita “Surprisingly Similar” To MK On PS3

While the PlayStation Vita isn't exactly a portable PS3, it's darn close in a number of different power respects.

Just ask some developers. NetherRealm Studios, for example, is prepping Mortal Kombat for Sony's new portable and during a Q&A at the PlayStation Blog , creative director Ed Boon was asked if they had to make any "major graphical sacrifices" in bringing the game to the Vita.

His response:

"It’s interesting. We did have to reduce some of the polygon counts from the backgrounds and characters, but that screen is so bright, and it’s got such high pixel density….when I saw Scorpion and Sub-Zero fighting on the Living Forest for the first time, I was amazed. It really maintains the identity of the game. I can’t wait for people to hold it in their hands and see it for themselves — it’s a surprisingly similar experience."

Boon went on to confirm that MK on the Vita will run at a silky smooth 60 frames per second. A few people thought they could get away with 30, but Boon said he knew it would feel different and in the end, they didn't want the handheld version to feel "sluggish or unresponsive." He also confirmed that we'd be able to use the touchscreen to execute a fatality, which we just find unassailably cool.

In short, Mortal Kombat on the go should be totally bad-ass.

Mortal Kombat Takes Its Legendary Flair To The Vita

It's yet another promising title for the PlayStation Vita, and after last year's successful reboot on the PS3, we're convinced NetherRealm Studios can deliver.

Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced that Mortal Kombat will come to Sony's new portable device in Spring 2012. At the helm is the aforementioned NetherRealm team, and the press release says MK for the Vita "delivers an experience designed specifically for on-the-go gaming with brand new gameplay features and content developed exclusively for the new handheld device."

Said NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon:

"The NetherRealm team is committed to making sure that we follow up the success of 2011’s Mortal Kombat with an equally compelling experience on the PlayStation Vita. The original game content and new features we developed for the PlayStation Vita will provide gamers with the best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform."

Mortal Kombat sold over 3 million units worldwide last year, and received the Spike TV Video Game Award for Best Fighting Game. It also got our award in the same category. As for the Vita version, you can expect all new features that have been developed exclusively for the handheld; they'll be releasing information on those "in the coming months."
