NetherRealm Studios Sets Sights On Mortal Kombat 12 Or Injustice 3

NetherRealm Studios

NetherRealm Studios’ big boss, Ed Boon, has confirmed the obvious for the future of the studio. He confirmed that the next game that the studio will work on is going to be either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3.

The news comes from Twitter when a user simply asked for a hint on what the next game is going to. He didn’t hide what it was that’s in the pipeline.

The confirmation isn’t shocking, looking at the studio’s past games, it’s clear it’s most comfortable with combat games and is the company trusted with the two IPs. Unfortunately, while we know what generally what to expect next, we can’t say for sure when.

Boon has denied presenting anything for this year’s The Game Awards, meaning no new MK stuff, though he will be in attendance. So, of course, it’ll probably be at least another two years before we hear anything about another Injustice or Mortal Kombat.

Mortal Kombat 11 DLC Support Halted As Dev Moves Onto New Project

Mortal Kombat 11

NetherRealm Studios is looking past Mortal Kombat 11 (read our MK 11 Ultimate Edition review) as DLC support halts. The developer announced the news on Friday that after two years of working on new content for the community, the studio is taking a step away from MK11 to work on their next project.

The Chicago-based developer hasn’t revealed what this new project is just yet. So, we don’t know if they’re working on the next Mortal Kombat, Injustice, or perhaps a whole new (probably fighting game-related) IP.

Whatever the case is, Mortal Kombat 11 had a good run, topping itself off at selling over eight million units. Its slew of DLC characters included likes of RoboCop, The Joker, Terminator’s T-800, Spawn, and more.

What do you think? Are you disappointed to see the game halt having new characters? Tell us below!

NetherRealm Studios Has “Other Stuff In The Oven”

NetherRealm Studios

As Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest continues to rage on, fans may finally see a different side of NetherRealm Studios in the future. Fans all know the developer, led by Ed Boon, to be in charge of the ever-releasing Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises, but it seems as though they’re ready to branch off and do other projects, too. During a Summer Game Fest Q&A, the NetherRealm creative director hinted that they have other plans in mind.

“Mortal Kombat has become like a staple thing, almost Marvel-like. You don’t expect the last Marvel movie to ever come out, they’re just gonna keep coming. Even though we’ve been able to scratch other itches, you know doing Injustice games and stuff, and we have other stuff in the oven, but it’s always nice to do the Mortal Kombat games.”

What’s Next For NetherRealm Studios?

For quite a while, fans were questioning what it was they were going to release next. The inclusion of The Joker seemed to almost set-in-stone the idea of an Injustice 3. Heck, even Boon joked about it, calling it “coincidental,” even though fans are fairly sure there’s something up his sleeve.

That said, it’s entirely possible we may not see a fighting game at all. While their forte has been dominated by fighting games with the MK franchise at the forefront, it’s hard to say with their comments this time around. It’s clear they still love the franchise and know how much it means to its fans and will continue to support it. That said, it can only go so far, and sometimes they need a break, which was what the Injustice franchise turned into.

NetherRealm Studios was also in charge of the Batman Arkham line of apps. Could we be seeing another fighting game coming our way or are they going to be throwing fans a curveball with a different genre?

What do you think? What do you hope they’ll release in the future? Tell us below!

Yes, Mortal Kombat Gives Gamers “Empowered Females”

It may be supremely violent but it's not sexist.

In fact, Mortal Kombat X creative director Ed Boon believes the controversial franchise actually empowers women in ways other video games don't.

During a recent GamesMaster magazine interview (as cited by GamerHeadlines ), Boon addressed female representation in the industry and said:

I feel like MK represents empowered females more than almost any game out there. You know, Mileena, Kitana, Sonya, now Cassie Cage — she’s going to one of the stars of this thing [Mortal Kombat X]. So I don’t think anybody can associate Mortal Kombat with any kind of…

Our female characters are treated exactly like our male characters, and we have a higher percentage of female characters than almost any fighting game, so I really believe that Mortal Kombat represents empowered women more than almost any game. I hold that up against almost any franchise at all. "

All of that is true, of course, and there's no doubt that the game is universally violent. It's not more violent when it comes to women and yeah, there are plenty of females on the MK roster that totally kick ass. So, technically speaking, Boon isn't wrong…right? I guess we'll never get away from the violence issue in general, though.

New Mortal Kombat Revealed On Monday?

Ready for a new MK?

Fighting fanatics have been anxiously anticipating the next Mortal Kombat entry, and franchise creator Ed Boon has been teasing a fresh announcement.

Boon has shown off an "MK X" logo – insinuating that "Mortal Kombat X" might be in the works – and now, as revealed at Reddit , we've got a leaked poster that unofficially confirms a new project: It shows a seriously busted spine, the basic MK logo, and the tagline, "Who's Next?" There's a countdown as well; it'll end on Monday, June 2, so that's probably when we'll get all the pertinent details.

MK enjoyed quite the resurgence the previous generation, which hardcore fans of the classic franchise definitely appreciated. What say we kick off the new generation in fine style…?

Keifer Sutherland Isn’t Just Snake, He’s In A New Mortal Kombat

Looks like this guy wants to spend more time in the video game industry.

We know Keifer Sutherland is the new voice of Snake in Metal Gear Solid V . It's a very high-profile role, but did you know he's also involved with another iconic franchise?

According to IGN , Sutherland made mention of another gig:

"I did Mortal Kombat, and that's such a huge game, but it's so not like [MGS5]."

Well, no, of course not. Unless the MK creators are planning to input a lot more story this time around, the role won't be similar. It's still a major franchise, though, and it'll be interesting to learn about Sutherland's involvement. Which character do you think he fits? Or, maybe he's not playing a current character; maybe he's the voice of a new villain or something.

The Mortal Kombat reboot was great; it's safe to say the series has made a triumphant return. And it seems they're really upping the ante with top-tier acting talent this time around.
