Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst’s World Isn’t Totally Open At The Start

We know that developer DICE has called Mirror's Edge: Catalyst "open-world."

But there are varying degrees of open-world; some games qualify as sandbox right out of the gate, while others take a slightly different approach.

The Mirror's Edge reboot (for that is what they're calling it ) falls into the latter category. In a recent Xbox One UK interview , senior producer Sara Jansson confirmed that the game won't be completely open at the start:

"It’s an expanding city that will open up more and more as you move through the story. [A] critique of the first game was that it was a little bit too difficult for a lot of people or a bit too frustrating, and we believe that just throwing players into a huge city to do what they want would have been a little intimidating, especially as our gameplay is pretty different from many other games."

Personally, I don't remember Mirror's Edge as being particularly difficult or frustrating, but the casual explosion has forced developers to make games easier and more accessible for wider audiences. And I've got no problem with an expanding city; I prefer it, in fact. Don't forget that Grand Theft Auto III was this way; you had to reach a certain stage of the story before you could get across that bridge and reach the other half of the city, remember? Even recent games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt adopt this style.

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is currently slated to launch on February 23, 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst “More Of A Reboot Than Anything Else”

It's easily one of the most anticipated games of the generation, and developer DICE hopes it's "just the beginning."

The original Mirror's Edge was unlike anything we'd seen before, and DICE aims to take that concept to new heights with Mirror's Edge: Catalyst .

During a recent interview with The Guardian , DICE General Mnager Patrick Bach calls the new title a reboot:

"It’s more of a reboot than anything else. We call it the origin story. We keep what the first game was all about, but we’ve allowed ourselves to remaster it from the core out. Some of the promises weren’t realized; we wanted to build a game that felt truly free and open."

It's definitely not a direct sequel, as DICE has made plain before , and Bach says they plan to improve on a lot of the concepts found in the first game. For instance, he says "the story was good but it wasn't great" and "the things you could do were limited." The new idea is to give the player an idea of what it'd be like being a true Free Runner in a big open world. And while there will be an increased focus on combat, there won't be any guns .

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is due out on February 26, 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst Features Combat, But No Guns

Many were worried about how DICE might present the new Mirror's Edge vision.

Is it going full-on open-world? Will there be more of an emphasis on combat? Would it feel more like a third-person shooter?

Apparently, the answers to these questions are yes, yes, and no. As revealed during E3, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst will indeed be open-world (no levels, no loading times) and the gameplay demo showed off a bigger emphasis on first-person combat. However, not long after, senior producer Sara Jansson confirmed to Polygon that guns will not play any role at all:

"In Mirror's Edge Catalyst, you won't be using any guns at all. We've completely removed that aspect of the game. You can't even pick them up."

It's probably a good idea. The focus should indeed remain on free-running, even if they do have to put in more combat. I'm hoping they still retain the puzzle-solving adventure-style aspect as well but for now, we should be satisfied with the slick new look.

Mirror’s Edge Live Action Film Is Pretty Damn Impressive

You had to assume that given the parkour focus in Mirror's Edge , some agile and creative individual would find inspiration.

And that person is YouTube's Claudiu Voicu, who has put up an incredible live action short film based on EA's title.

Shot from the first-person viewpoint, as it should be, this wall ninja flings herself through a series of obstacles and she even tosses in a few armed foes to bypass. It looks very much like Mirror's Edge , right down to the red sneakers. If you're capable of doing this, though, is it really that much fun to do it in a virtual world?

Expect to see a lot more of the new game, Mirror's Edge: Catalyst at E3 next week.

Dark Horse, EA To Deliver Comic Series For New Mirror’s Edge

To get a jump on the story in the new Mirror's Edge: Catalyst , you'll have to snag the comic book.

That's right, Electronic Arts and Dark Horse Comics plan to release a six-issue comic series that explores the back story of the game's protagonist, Faith.

Called "Mirror's Edge: Exordium," it will give readers "special insight into the origin of Faith" in the comics as she transforms "from a careless young woman to the heroine who opens the eyes of the city." The 32-page Exordium Issue #1 will be available to purchase on September 9 for $3.99; we imagine you can buy 'em all for one price once they all release.

Mirror's Edge: Catalyst was just confirmed and it should make plenty of waves at E3 next week.

Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst Confirmed, Is Not A True Sequel

A couple days ago, we heard via social media that the new Mirror's Edge project is actually called "Catalyst."

As it turns out, that was true. Developer DICE has confirmed as much at the new game's website , and they've also clarified an important point: Mirror's Edge: Catalyst is not a sequel.

The game's senior producer, Sara Jansson, says the game builds on the foundation of the 2008 title:

"The first game had a lot of promise. It was unlike anything else in terms of the gameplay and style–it had a unique soul. But as much as we loved that game, we knew it could be more. So that's what we have set out to do as we introduce Mirror's Edge to a new generation."

Jansson added that this is not "Mirror's Edge 2" and while this new game "honors the first game" the designers will introduce plenty of new and interesting gameplay features. Well, guess that means it's another open-world/sandbox action game with some free-running elements. 'sigh'

Catalyst is supposed to release during EA's fourth fiscal quarter, which puts it somewhere between January and March of 2016. And yes, they're showing it off at E3 so stay tuned!
