Platinum Altered Revengeance To Avoid “Censorship Issues”

So what's going on with Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance ?

Well, it was featured in the latest issue of Play Magazine, which means more details have found their way to eager eyes.

As summarized by The Silent Chief , we learn why new designer Platinum Games changed the enemies from human to cyborg; it seems the human foes were taken out "to avoid censorship issues in Japan." Now that surprises us, considering the sheer amount of violence in much of Japan's entertainment media. Also, Raiden will have the ability to parry attacks even when his back is turned to the incoming blow, which makes sense. The developer typically institutes this feature in their action-oriented titles.

It is interesting to note that censorship issue. We usually hear about excessively violent games being banned from places like Australia; more often than not, though, it's not a problem in Japan. Maybe Platinum just isn't all that comfortable with blood and gore…they're not really into that type of thing, as past titles like Vanquish and Bayonetta were about the action and atmosphere rather than the ripping apart of bodies.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance should make an appearance at this year's E3 (it'll even be playable, supposedly), so maybe that's when we'll get a solidified release date.

Platinum Clarifies: Lead Platform For Rising Is The PS3

This makes perfect sense in a couple of different ways.

During the behind-the-scenes making-of video of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (it debuted yesterday), people noticed the game was being controlled with an Xbox 360 controller. This gave way to speculation that new developer Platinum Games was using Microsoft's console as the lead platform.

But according to Andriasang citing Inaba's Twitter feed, the opposite is true: the PlayStation 3 is the lead platform for Rising . Here's a little studio history: with Bayonetta , the team dropped the ball because they only developed the 360 version; the PS3 version was handled externally. But they rectified the problem with Vanquish by making both versions. Furthermore: "Games are developed on an internal Platinum-developed engine, and PS3 is always the lead platform."

The reason you saw the 360 controller in the making-of documentary? That's just because it's used to control the game on PC for cross-platform development. Inaba concluded his Twitter monologue by saying-

"So, in closing, Metal Gear Rising's lead platform is also PlayStation 3."

Also, let's not forget that Kojima Productions very likely used the PS3 as the lead platform when creating those character designs, too. So it all just kinda fits together, right?

Metal Gear Rising Incurs MGS Fan’s Vengeful Wrath

Be careful, Konami. For the love of God…be careful.

We're not about to accuse you of becoming another Square Enix. No, it's far too early for that and after all, Platinum Games is the primary developer for the newly renamed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance . Kojima Productions is still part of the project (apparently), but it's not like Hideo Kojima is making this game.

And with the "Solid" part of the title gone and the rumor that Kojima might be working on MGS5 or even Zone of the Enders 3 , Konami isn't in a terrible position. Not yet. But they should be wary about the wrath of the hardcore fan; this new game does have "Metal Gear" in the title and if you check around the Internet, those die-hard fans feel a little betrayed. It's important that you listen and respond to those fans who have adored the iconic Metal Gear Solid franchise.

I'm not saying they should cancel Revengeance because contrary to the popular opinion, I think the game showed promise (strictly from an action-oriented standpoint), and Platinum knows what they're doing in this genre. But storytelling isn't their forte, and with zero stealth and virtually no resemblance to MGS (besides Raiden's presence), Revengeance is going to ruffle some feathers. No, don't cancel the game; just be warned: you're treading on eggshells, Konami. A few followers are a trifle concerned.

Your saving grace right now is Kojima himself. No way MGS5 will be anything like Platinum's game, and if anyone knows his fans, it's this guy. We're convinced MGS won't suddenly become a series the long-time lovers hate ('cough' Final Fantasy 'cough') but this can turn into a slippery slope very fast. So just take this as a PSA, Konami. Keep it in the back of your mind, okay?
