Community Vote: Pick Your GOTY

Game of the Year

Salutations, PSX Extreme reader!

As you may know, we selected God of War as our pick for Game Of The Year 2018, and rightfully so. In our twenty years of covering the video game industry, we’ve only ever given out ten perfect scores, and God of War was one of them. However, because everybody has a different opinion, there are some people out there that disagree with our selection. So instead of arguing with ya over what game should have received our GOTY award, we’ll give you all the option of basically picking the Game Of The Year yourself. Community Edition.

Below (and to the right of every page) you’ll find a selection of 20 video games released throughout 2018. These games are available on multiple consoles and gaming platforms, with some of them being exclusive. This way there’s no platform bias, only good games. So now we leave it up to you, our loyal readers, to select your top 3 games of 2018. We’ll run this poll for about a month, and after all of the data has been collected, we’ll share the results with you as a secondary Community Vote 2018 Award.

GotY Battle Thus Far: Bloodborne Versus The Witcher 3?

Have we already seen this year's Game of the Year? Or are we just getting started?

So far, we've seen two games that would probably factor into end-of-year voting for 2015 GotY: Bloodborne and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . Do you think either will win the illustrious award and if you had to guess, which one has the advantage right now?

Wild Hunt is bringing down very big scores; it currently holds a Metascore of 92. From Software's challenging but wonderfully received PlayStation 4 exclusive also has an average Metascore of 92. It's a dead heat for the time being but of course, we don't have the majority of reviews for The Witcher 3 just yet. When all is said and done, which one will have the critical edge? And outside of scores, which one do you think you'll prefer?

Obviously, as you haven't played one of the games yet, it's hard to say. But it's always fun to guess. And don't forget that Batman: Arkham Knight releases in June, so we might have three legit GotY contenders in the first six months alone. And I doubt anyone will be complaining.

Should Game Of The Year Rely Solely On Review Scores?

The task of assigning Game of the Year Awards for any source is a little more complicated than it probably should be.

The biggest question many gamers ask is- "Why can't we just go by the review scores? Obviously, the highest one for any particular source should get Game of the Year." Well, that's not necessarily true.

For some of the bigger sources with many critics on staff, the end-of-year awards are a result of a collaboration. Hence, if the one person who, for example, gave Grand Theft Auto V an 8.5 was outvoted by all the others who claim it's indeed the top game of 2013, GTAV wins. Something similar obviously happened at GameSpot, where they just gave PlayStation 3 GotY 2013 to the stellar PS3 exclusive, The Last Of Us . The game only scored an 8 when it was reviewed there, and it was up against multiple 9-scoring titles.

One could argue that most of those other games were multiplatform, and one should give GotY for a particular platform to an exclusive production. But Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is a PS3 exclusive, and that scored a 9. So did Guacamelee (exclusive to PS3 and Vita). So, what happened? Like I said, the rest of the staff must've stepped up and outvoted the original critic for TLoU. But shouldn't readers consider the review to be a product of the site and not of the individual? Granted, only the individual reviewed it, but it's published under the brand name of the website. Hence, giving a game an 8 and then calling it GotY for that platform seems illogical.

Then there's another problem- When a game comes out, it can only be compared against other existing titles. Obviously, when scoring Bioshock Infinite , there was no way to know what TLoU or GTAV would be like. So, doesn't this mean that games scored at the end of the year should be given more weight? After all, they were pitted against most all big titles from the year, while those great games in February and March didn't have much in the way of competition. Really, it's a lot more complicated than you think…

What Does The Game Of The Year Label Mean To You?

"Game of the Year" is the most prestigious award any source that covers the industry can hand out. But as is the case with reviews, there is no standardized approach to determining winners, and the criteria for choosing those winners. It ain't easy.

So what does that illustrious label mean to you? What would you look at when determining the year's best video game? Are you putting more of an emphasis on fun factor, which would translate to a more subjective analysis? Would you be willing to give your favorite title Game of the Year over a production that might be more qualified from a technical and artistic perspective? Or would you stress innovation and freshness? So many people have complained about a lack of originality this generation (which I don't necessarily agree with, by the way), so maybe that's important to you. There must be priorities.

Then again, maybe you just take the most straightforward approach- Pick the game that simply appears to be the most accomplished, whether it's your cup of tea or not. We should all be able to appreciate extreme levels of quality, regardless of opinion and personal preference. That can be difficult to do, though…after all, isn't it a little weird if we couldn't entertain ourselves with our own Game of the Year pick? By the way, although it really hasn't been tough from PSXE's point of view over the last few years, our 2012 choice for Game of the Year is requiring a lot more thought. No, it hasn't been decided yet, but you'll know soon enough.

PSXE Poll Update: God Of War III Will Be Last One Standing

It's a tough question, to be sure. What will win our coveted Game of the Year Award when all is said and done in 2010?

Well, although Gran Turismo 5 put up a good fight, the majority believe we'll give our highest honor to the unbelievable God of War III . It's not a bad pick, either, as it certainly holds the highest review score for the year thus far, and only GT5 has a realistic shot of equaling or surpassing that number, right? Well, we have high hopes for Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood , too, don't forget… Behind GT5 was Red Dead Redemption , Rockstar's awesome GTA-in-the-Wild-West blockbuster that we just loved. Lagging behind in fourth but still making a solid showing was Quantic Dream's evolutionary Heavy Rain , which, at the very least, deserves to be nominated. Of course, we haven't made up our minds yet, especially with several huge titles on the immediate horizon. As for Call of Duty: Black Ops …well, who knows?

Speaking of the Treyarch/Activision mega-blockbuster, it comes out this week and we'd like you to make another prediction- what are we gonna give it? Let's just rule out anything below a 6 right now; while we never count our chickens before they've hatched, we just refuse to believe Black Ops is a poor product from an objective standpoint. That being said, we do try to be as accurate and as in-depth as possible, as all our loyal readers well know by now. You can trust us not to be blinded by the CoD lovefest but you can also trust that we'll give quality its just due. So…what say you?
