Is Fallout 4 Game Of The Year? Critical Average Says “No”

Well, I guess all the contenders for Game of the Year 2015 are now available (unless you think Star Wars: Battlefront has an outside shot).

And of those contenders, many were thinking Fallout 4 would storm the critical charts and be a definite possibility for the year's most illustrious award. And for the most part, those people weren't wrong…but Bethesda's latest certainly doesn't have the lead, if we go by the average Metacritic ranking.

As of now, Fallout 4 holds an 87 rating (86 on PC and 88 on Xbox One), which is great but well below a few of the contenders: For instance, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain leads the way with a stellar 93 rating (95 on Xbox One and 91 on PC), while The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt holds a 92 average rating (93 on PC and 91 on Xbox One), and the PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne also has a 92 .

As a frame of reference, Fallout 4 now has the same review average as Batman: Arkham Knight , and the recently released Halo 5: Guardians is lower at 85 . This all being said, do you still see Fallout 4 garnering plenty of GotY awards from various sources?

Ultimate RPG GotY 2015 Battle: The Witcher 3 vs. Fallout 4?

Last year's best role-playing game was a no-brainer in our opinion. It just had to be Dragon Age: Inquisition .

But things could be a lot tougher this year. Perhaps the final battle will come down to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the upcoming Fallout 4 .

I know many want to toss Bloodborne into the mix as well, but perhaps some see it as more action and less RPG? One could argue it relies more on the dexterity of an action aficionado than The Witcher 3 , even though both offer real-time combat based on a solo individual.

Anyway, for RPG purists, I think it really will come down to Fallout 4 and The Witcher 3 . Which one do you think will get the nod? And here's another question to throw a wrench into the works: Should we consider The Witcher 3 as it is at the end of the year (all fixed and improved), or do have to only consider the launch product? That's an interesting question, really… I'm not a big fan of the Fallout series but chances are, it's going to bring down some huge scores and hopefully , it'll be a lot more stable than The Witcher 3 was at launch.

What say you?

PSXE Poll Update: Fallout 4 Has Best Shot At GotY 2015

Of course, it's difficult to make such a prediction now but it's always fun to guess.

And we've already seen several legitimate Game of the Year contenders already. So, in our latest poll, we wanted to know which title you think will land the illustrious award come the end of 2015.

In a very close race, the winner is the anticipated open-world RPG, Fallout 4 . Another epic sandbox RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , was a close second, and just a few notches behind that was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain . Speaking of the new Batman , what do you think of it? Is it indeed one of the year's very best, as we said in our review? Or are you a bit more lukewarm about the production? Let us know.

PSXE Poll Update: FFVII Remake Topped E3 Favorite Moments

It's not exactly surprising but the race was closer than you might think.

When we asked the readers to name their favorite moment of E3, we figured the unveiling of the Final Fantasy VII Remake would win easily.

Well, it did win – and by a fair margin – but there were quite a few people who voted for Fallout 4 and more who went with Guerrilla's Horizon: Zero Dawn . Given the shock surrounding the FFVII Remake, we figured that would just override everything else. We also thought the return of The Last Guardian would make a bigger impression. But hey, you learn something new every day.

This week, what game do you think will end up winning Game of the Year? Is it the recently released Batman: Arkham Knight or do you think Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain or Fallout 4 will be unbeatable? Let us know.

Already A Three-Way Battle For Game Of The Year 2015?

As of right now, it looks like a 3-way race for Game of the Year 2015…and we haven't even hit July yet.

Even though the fall is packed with hugely anticipated games, the first half of 2015 has made a strong statement.

The recently released Batman: Arkham Knight is hauling down plenty of praise and glowing reviews, and rightfully so. Many are saying it is indeed the best title yet this year. But there are many others who are still siding with one of the previous greats: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt or Bloodborne . Both have been named the best of a new generation by various critics and sources, and they'll be in the mix at the end of the year.

Then again, look what's coming: Fallout 4 , Assassin's Creed Syndicate , Star Wars: Battlefront , Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain , Call of Duty: Black Ops III , Halo 5: Guardians , and more are stacking up for the holiday push. When it finally comes time to hand out the awards, it'll be very interesting to see which titles earn the most acclaim. I guess it all depends on how each will be remembered as time goes on…
